Summary The distribution of the red bone marrow of 12 normal adults was quantitatively determined. The in vivo method is based on the measurement of Fe59 16–20 hours after intravenous application. A whole-body scan with two detectors moving along the patients axis and successive measurements with a stationary detector at several points of the spine were carried out. The percentage of the red marrow in head and arms, spine, thorax, pelvis and legs was determined with good accuracy. The results were compared with estimations of different authors, and with the results of morphological methods. Our findings allow the calculation of the exposed red marrow by x-ray examinations and may serve as normal values for the diagnosis of a pathological spreading of the haematopoiesis.
Notes:
