Notes: Allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) has become an important health issue in recent years, but little is known about how this condition is investigated by physicians in the UK. This postal questionnaire of British dermatology and allergy specialists shows substantial variation in diagnostic practice, most notably with regard to the utilization and choice of starting dose of commercial latex prick test dilutions, reliance on allergen-specific immunoglobulin E measurement, investigation of associated fruit allergy and provision of resuscitation equipment/method of consent when challenge testing. 17% of responding physicians who investigate for NRL allergy do not perform prick test or glove challenge because of the potential risk of anaphylaxis or lack of resuscitation facilities. 87% of allergy clinic specialists report no reduction in the number of patients presenting as new referrals with suspected NRL allergy. These findings suggest a need for robust guidance to achieve more consistent investigative practice by those dealing with this condition.

Notes: Whilst beach-profile surveying is a relatively long-established and widely utilised shoreline monitoring technique, a considerable gap exists between theoretical and practical requirements from, and uses of, beach-profile data. The paper bridges this gap by providing a summary of the key elements of beach-profile measurement, theory and analysis. The benefits of applying these elements to practical coastal management are given in three case studies. The first case study presents results from beach-profile analysis on a regional scale in East Anglia. The second case study applies both analytical and theoretical techniques to investigate erosional problems along a coastal bay in Jersey. The third case study assesses the performance of two major sand-replenishment schemes in Poole Bay (on the south coast of England) based upon beach-profile volumetric analyses. Most importantly, the paper demonstrates that beach-profile measurement, theory and analysis can provide information of practical use in coastal management.

Notes: In an article published in this journal several years ago Professor Vincent advanced the view that the Tories' triumph in Lancashire in 1868, when they won 22 out of 33 seats as against 12 out of 27 in 1865, was attributable less to the new franchise than to other changes in electoral arrangements, namely, boundary alterations and the creation of new seats.

Notes: A vast amount has been written on the relationship between Terence's and Menander's Eunuchus. On some points a good measure of agreement has been reached, but much remains in dispute. In an important article W. Ludwig convincingly demonstrated the inner unity of Terence's plot, against earlier theories of large-scale ‘contaminatio’ The nature of the changes made by Terence in introducing two characters from Menander's Colax (30–3) is now fairly clear, although argument is possible over details. The changes are numerous but relatively small and do not affect the main lines of Menander's plot. In this paper I shall argue that Terence made similar changes in two other parts of the play, and that these caused certain anomalies which have prompted theories of more drastic Terentian change.

Notes: [Auszug] Woodworth, Tan and Virkaitis2 suggest, however, that the intermediate isoelectric fraction represents a dimer composed of one molecule each of metal-free protein and iron-saturated protein. According to their interpretation of gel filtration experiments the intermediate isoelectric fraction is a ...

Notes: The Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™ (Engineered Medical Systems, Indianapolis, IN) is a new supraglottic airway designed for spontaneous and controlled ventilation. It is not yet commercially available in the UK. Our aim was to evaluate the performance of the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™ in a cohort study and in a randomised, controlled, crossover comparison study with the Classic Laryngeal Mask Airway™. After studying 29 patients, both studies were suspended and later stopped after two cases of significant pulmonary aspiration had occurred in patients whilst using the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™. These cases raised concern about both the design and the safety of the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™, particularly during controlled ventilation. We suggest that the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™ should not be marketed for controlled ventilation until more safety data are available.
