    Notes: We have developed the highly efficient neutron detector system MANDALA for the inertial-confinement-fusion experiment. The MANDALA system consists of 842 elements plastic scintillation detectors and data acquisition electronics. The detection level is the yield of 1.2×105 for 2.5 MeV and 1×105 for 14.1 MeV neutrons (with 100 detected hits). We have calibrated the intrinsic detection efficiencies of the detector elements using a neutron generator facility. Timing calibration and integrity test of the system were also carried out with a 60Co γ ray source. MANDALA system was applied to the implosion experiments at the GEKKO XII laser facility. The integrity test was carried out by implosion experiments. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Five whole-rock 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages from low-grade sectors of the Sambagawa belt (Besshi nappe complex) range between 87 and 97 Ma. Two whole-rock phyllite samples from the Mikabu greenstone belt record well-defined 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 96 and 98 Ma. Together these ages suggest that a high-pressure metamorphism occurred in both the Sambagawa and Mikabu belts at c. 90–100 Ma. The northern Chichibu sub-belt may consist of several distinct geochronological units because metamorphic ages increase systematically from north (c. 110 Ma) to south (c. 215 Ma). The northern Chichibu sub-belt is correlated with the Kuma nappe complex (Sambagawa belt). Two whole-rock phyllite samples from the Kurosegawa terrane display markedly older metamorphic ages than either the Sambagawa or the Chichibu belts.Accretion of Sambagawa-Chichibu protoliths began prior to the middle Jurrasic. Depositional ages decrease from middle Jurassic (Kuma-Chichibu nappe complex) to c. 100 Ma (Oboke nappe complex) toward lower tectonostratigraphic units. The ages of metamorphic culmination also decrease from upper to lower tectonostratigraphic units. The Kurosegawa belt and the geological units to the south belong to distinctly different terrances than the Sambagawa-Chichibu belts. These have been juxtaposed as a result of transcurrent faulting during the Cretaceous.

    Notes: Abstract: The nucleotide sequence of mRNA for rat cerebellar spot 35 protein, a Ca-binding protein, was determined from recombinant complementary DNA (cDNA) clones. The sequence was composed of 1, 714 base pairs (bp) which included the 783 bp of the complete coding region, the 130 bp of the 5′-noncoding region, and the 801 bp of the 3-noncoding region containing a polyadenylation signal. In addition, a polyadenylic acid [poly(A)] tail was also found. Because the size of spot 35 mRNA was estimated to be about 1,900 bases by Northern blot analysis, the longest insert was verified to contain a nearly full-length cDNA sequence including the poly(A) tail. The amino acid sequence of the protein deduced from the nucleotide sequence contains 261 amino acids and at least five Ca-binding domains. There was a high homology in the amino acid sequences (79%) and the nucleotide sequences (77%) between spot 35 protein and chick intestinal Ca-binding protein (28K).

    Notes: Transparent iron-oxide films were fabricated by sol-gel synthesis using a solution of ferric nitrate (III) dissolved in ethylene glycol.1 The solution was kept at 80 °C and stirred constantly in a nitrogen atmosphere. The gel with an appropriate viscosity was spin coated on soft glass plates, then dried and heated in air at various temperatures for 5 h. The films thus prepared are about 0.2 μm thick, amber colored, and especially transparent in the near-infrared region, whose transmittance exceeds 90%. Maximum saturation magnetization 4πMs=0.74 kG [curve (a)] was obtained by annealing at 450 °C, which is still insufficient to use practical application. Reduction heat treatment in a hydrogen atmosphere is found to be very effective to improve magnetic properties: 4πMs is increased to 3 kG [curve (b)], which is about four times as large as the previous one, but the films become semitransparent due to formation of magnetite particles. Original high transmittance recovers by successive annealing in air at 400 °C without any degradation of magnetic properties [curve (c)], where diffraction peaks of maghemite were observed. This strongly suggests that magnetic anisotropy may be arbitrarily controlled by forming linear chains of ferromagnetic particle clusters through reduction heat treatment in a magnetic field. Faraday rotation θF of the samples was also measured. These films are promising as a new type magneto-optic material.

    Notes: As a continuation of a previous paper [Phys. Rev. A 50, 2989 (1994)], this article develops and describes in detail the new nonperturbative approach to the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities χ(3)g(ω) in third-harmonic generation (THG), electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISH), degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM), electric-field-induced optical rectification (EFIOR), and electric-field-induced Kerr effect (EFIKE) for N-state quantum systems interacting with intense electric fields. The present method utilizes the Fourier transformation of numerically exact solutions of the Liouville equation, so that it can provide both real and imaginary nonlinear optical spectra valid for arbitrary laser intensities, frequencies, and relaxation. As an application of the method, we investigate the characteristics of nonlinear optical spectra in THG, EFISH, and DFWM for a three-state model that mimics the electronic excited states of t-octatetraene obtained from a full configuration interaction (FCI) calculation using the Pariser–Parr–Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian. Comparisons between the present nonperturbative and the conventional perturbative results are also carried out. The magnitudes of the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities in the off-resonant region show the following trend: χ(3)(THG)(approximately-greater-than)χ(3)(EFISH)(approximately-greater-than)χ(3)(DFWM), with χ(3)(THG) exhibiting the largest frequency dispersion. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An analysis method based on virtual excitation processes is developed in numerical Liouville approach, which is a new nonperturbative method presented before. In this analysis method (NLA three-type analysis method), third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities χ(3)g(ω) obtained by the NLA method can be divided into the three-type virtual excitation processes similar to the three-type analysis based on the time-dependent perturbation theory (TDPT three-type analysis). The NLA three-type analysis method is superior to the TDPT three-type analysis one in the points as follows: (1) the NLA three-type analysis can treat the phenomena caused by the intensity-dependent nonlinear susceptibilities including nonperturbative effects and (2) the NLA three-type analysis can divide the resonant nonlinear susceptibilities into three types of virtual excitation processes. In order to explain the procedure of the present analysis, we try to elucidate the characteristics of virtual excitation processes of nonlinear optical spectra in THG for a three-state model that mimics the electronic excited states of a system with noncentrosymmetric charge distribution. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magneto-optical, compositional, and magnetic properties of Biz(LuSmPb)3−zFe5O12 (z=0.05–0.9) grown epitaxially on Nd3Ga5O12 substrates from melts with different PbO/Bi2O3 ratios were studied. Chemical analysis by an x-ray microanalyzer indicates that Bi is incorporated into these films primarily by replacing Sm. Room-temperature Faraday rotation θF was measured at a wavelength of 633 nm. θF is proportional to Bi concentration z in the film and is −2×104 deg/cm for z=1.0. θF of Ga-substituted films for a Ga concentration of 0.6 was about 20% smaller than that of the unsubstituted film. The magnetic uniaxial anisotropy field Hk measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer ranged from 2500 to 5400 Oe. From the analysis of Hk data, it was found that Pb-Lu and Bi-Lu pairs were major contributors to Hk of the present garnet films.
