Notes: The design of the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) multicharged ion source DECRIS (Dubna ECR ion source, 14 GHz) was started at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at the beginning of 1990 and in January 1992 the first plasma was ignited. A classical magnetic configuration based on the MINIMAFIOS with some "features'' served as the basis for the source design. The DECRIS was installed on the ECR test bench. The first study of the source was carried out in continuous mode of operation at strict control of hexapole temperature. The ion source has been tested with He, N, O, and Ar ions. The results of these initial measurements are presented.

Notes: We analyse the problem of radiation of seismic waves by a vibroseis source when the baseplate is subject to flexure. A theoretical model is proposed to account for baseplate flexure, generalizing the well-known model of the vibroseis source of Sallas and Weber, which was developed for a rigid plate. Using the model proposed, we analyse the effect of flexure on the properties of seismic waves. We show that the flexure does not contribute to the far-field and mainly affects the readings of the reference accelerometer that is used to measure the force applied to the ground; these readings generally become dependent on the location of the sensor on the plate. For muddy and sandy soils, the effect of flexure on baseplate-acceleration measurements is nonetheless pronounced at the high end of the vibroseis frequency band only (∼100 Hz), and is negligible at all frequencies for stiffer soils. The corresponding phase lags introduced by the flexural vibrations at high frequencies lead to errors in the traveltime measurements (through the cross-correlation function) of up to 0.6 ms for muddy soils and less for denser soils. We show the existence of an optimal position of the reference sensor on the baseplate and also propose a general method of eliminating the phase lag due to the baseplate flexure in acceleration measurements.

Notes: Abstract Tourmaline solid solutions containing Fe, Fe+ Ti, Cr, Ni, Cu, Co, Mn chromophoric centers have been grown hydrothermally at 650° C and 1,5 kbar on natural seeding plates close to the elbaite composition. The newly grown tourmalines were characterized by chemical analyses and optical absorption spectroscopy in the range 26316-5000 cm-1 at 297 K and in the range 26316-9090 cm-1 at 77 K. Most characteristic of Fe2+, Fe3+-bearing specimens is the presence of intensive σpolarized absorption bands caused by exchange-coupled Fe2+-Fe3+ pairs in Y- and Z-sites of the tourmaline structure. An additional intensive absorption band 12500 cm-1 (σ-polarisation) appears in some specimens but is not yet found in spectra of natural tourmalines. The colour and spectroscopic properties of the Fe3+, Mn3+ and Cu2+ containing tourmalines are significantly affected by the presence of even the smallest Li-contents. The results suggest that Fe2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+-ions occupy, predominantly, Y-sites of the tourmaline structure, whereas the Cr3+-ions seem to enter the smaller Z-octachedra.

Notes: Abstract The lattice mismatch and stereographic maps of the prevailing epitaxial relationships for HTS on perovskite-type substrates have been determined as a function of substrate orientation. The compositions and orientations of substrates for creating perfect single crystalline HTS layers are presented. The misfit may be decreased to nearly 0 for LnGaO3 and SrLnGaO4, where Ln is a rare-earth ion having a large ionic radius, by optimal choice of substrate orientation. For the LnAlO3 and (Ca, Sr)LnAlO4 families, good lattice match is lacking. The best compounds among them are LaAlO3 and SrLaAlO4. Because of the weak orientation dependence of the misfit for SrTiO3 and the LnAlO3 family, the main purpose of substrate orientation optimization is to suppress polysynthetic twinning.

Notes: Abstract The results of photographic studies of the behavior of an electric arc in a submerged gas jet, using both regular photography and still and cine shadow photography, are presented. The interaction of the arc with the turbulent portion of the jet and the development of disturbances in the arc and the thermal layer around the arc dependent on initial jet velocity are noted. Experimentally obtained values for extent of the arc laminar zone, radius of arc thermal layer, and electric field intensity are compared with calculated values.

Notes: Abstract An equivalent electric circuit diagram is proposed for a dc plasmatron excited with alternating current. On the basis of this circuit diagram and with the aid of the dynamic characteristic, the phase angle of the excitation current is then calculated.
