Notes: Two electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) sources, DECRIS-14-2 and ECR4M, are presently in permanent operation at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions cyclotrons, U400M and U400, respectively. A wide range of ions of gases from He up to Xe was delivered by the sources and accelerated in the cyclotrons. Major efforts were made in the production of high current stable ion beams of solids with relatively low melting points in mass ranges from Li up to Bi. Both the evaporator and the MIVOC technique were used. Among the solids a beam as exotic as 48Ca was produced at the U400 cyclotron with high efficiency. The main results on production of ion beams of gases and solids are reported. For further development of ECR ion sources a test bench was designed and built. The test bench is equipped with the new DECRIS-3 ion source. The parameters of the test bench and ECR source are described. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this paper we report the results of production of ions of solids from the PIG source with an additional anode and solid material feed by cathode sputtering. The investigations were performed at the test bench and at the U-400 cyclotron. Two versions of the ion source with different dispositions of the sputtering electrode were studied. In the first version the sputtering electrode is introduced into the discharge chamber through the wall opposite to the emission slit, the second version has lateral disposition of the sputtering electrode. The influence of the potential of an additional anode on the total extracted current and charge state distribution was studied at the test bench for both versions. The results of the test of the ion source with lateral disposition of the sputtering electrode at the U-400 cyclotron are reported. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A review of Penning ionization gauge (PIG), duoplasmatron (DP), laser-plasma ion source (LPIS), Electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS), and electron beam ion source (EBIS) used for the production of intense and high charge state ion beams is given. The outputs of high charge states of different elements of the Periodic Table from ion sources of these types are compared. Bare nuclei up to Ar can be obtained from EBIS and ECR and Xe+54 from EBIS. Comparisons are made of compilations of the output (high average current of 107–1017 pps) for different charge states of Xe for PIG, DP, ECRIS, EBIS ion sources and Ta, Pb for different charge states of the LPIS. The present level and perspectives of development (a pulsed gas feed, stationary electric field) of the PIG ion source are presented. The beam performance and future development of these intense and high charge state ion sources are discussed from the point of view of the perspectives of the cyclotron programs at FLNR and JINR.

Notes: An injector with a PIG ion source has been designed for the axial injection system of the U-200 cyclotron. An accel-decel electrode system and Wien filter are used for extraction of the ion beam. Some results of computer simulations of the ion trajectories in such an ion optical system and the experimental results of the ion beam formation and transport are presented.

Notes: The Dubna electron cyclotron resonance ion source DECRIS-14-2 was put into regular operation at the U-400M cyclotron in the beginning of 1995. During the past two years the source has produced a wide range of ion beams for physics experiments as well as for the testing of the beam transport lines and the cyclotron itself. Ions of gases, such as He, N, O, Ne, and Ar were successfully delivered and accelerated in the cyclotron. The ion source has shown good performance especially in the case of middle charge state ions (e.g., 600 eμA of Ar8+) as well as high operational reliability. Significant progress in metal ion production has been achieved by introducing a new microoven for the evaporation of metal samples. This microoven in combination with an additional tantalum sheet installed inside the discharge chamber has made it possible to obtain Li2+ ion beams in excess of 200 eμA. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The results of investigations of the dual chamber PIG ion source with plasma transport by crossed E×B fields are presented. The aim of the experiments was to study the possibility of ion production in the PIG source in two stages: plasma production in the first chamber and further ionization in the second chamber. The experiments on beam extraction from both chambers by two independent extracting electrodes have shown that the current extracted from the second chamber is determined mainly by the plasma flux from the first chamber. The charge state distribution of ions extracted from the second chamber is shifted to higher charge states comparing with that measured for the first chamber. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is common knowledge that the electrostatic pit in a core plasma of electron cyclotron resonance sources exerts strict control over generation of ions in high charge states. This work is aimed at finding a dependence of the lifetime of ions on their charge states in the core region and to elaborate a numerical model of ion charge dispersion not only for the core plasmas but for extracted beams as well. The calculated data are in good agreement with the experimental results on charge distributions and magnitudes for currents of beams extracted from the 14 GHz DECRIS source. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The new electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source, the Dubna electron cyclotron resonance ion source (DECRIS)-14-2, was designed and built for use with the isochronous cyclotron U-400M. The source assembly was completely finished by the end of 1994 and in January of 1995 the source was tested on the ECR-test bench. In February the source was installed in the cyclotron and in April the first physical experiment on the accelerated beam was carried out. Here we present some design aspects of this source and the results of the first operation on the cyclotron. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The design of the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) multicharged ion source DECRIS (Dubna ECR ion source, 14 GHz) was started at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at the beginning of 1990 and in January 1992 the first plasma was ignited. A classical magnetic configuration based on the MINIMAFIOS with some "features'' served as the basis for the source design. The DECRIS was installed on the ECR test bench. The first study of the source was carried out in continuous mode of operation at strict control of hexapole temperature. The ion source has been tested with He, N, O, and Ar ions. The results of these initial measurements are presented.

Notes: A method of measurement of an instantaneous value of the volume flow rate (in the range 0.05–5 cm3 min−1)of a gas flowing into an ion chamber of an ion source is described. It consists of the measurement of pressure differences (0–100 Pa) on a system of diaphragms with a small hole (0.2 mm) made in the center of them. The pressure differences are generated by the flowing of the gas through the latter. The sensitivity of the system depends on the number of diaphragms used. Parameters of diaphragms are estimated by the special equation describing the flow of the gas through an orifice in a pipe and the equation for laminar flow in a round tube. Calibrating measurements with He, air, Ar, and Xe demonstrated that our diaphragm can be used for the measurement of flow rates of all these gases.
