Notes: Calcrete profiles (caliche) have been recognized in the Eyam Limestone from the Lower Carboniferous in the area around Monyash, Derbyshire. They occur at the top of the flank facies surrounding carbonate-mud buildups (‘knoll reefs’). Four units make up the complete profile. These are from base to top: (1) grain-supported sediment with rhizocretions, (2) matrix-supported sediment with alveolar texture, (3) pelleted calcrete, (4) laminar calcrete. Commonly one or more units are missing from the profile. Calcretes indicate subaerial exposure. The carbonate buildups of the Eyam Limestone were completely exposed soon after deposition, requiring a fall in sea-level probably in excess of 10 m. This discovery demands a review of previous regional palaeoenvironmental studies.

Notes: The time to safe return of neuromuscular function after atracurium 0.3 mg/kg intravenously was assessed in 24 patients in whom anaesthesia was maintained with halothane 0.5%. Safe reversal (recovery to a T4 ratio 〉 05), after this dose of atracurium, could only be reliably and rapidly (〈 2 minutes) achieved with edrophonium if a period greater than 30 minutes elapsed since administration of the relaxant. This coincides with the appearance of four recognisable twitches if a train-of-four pattern of nerve stimulation is used. Thus, if no monitoring equipment is available, at least half-an-hour should elapse after administration of atracurium in a moderate dose (e.g. 0.3 mg/kg) before rapid and reliable reversal can be anticipated. Four twitches in a train-of-four should be recognisable, if a nerve stimulator is available.

Notes: The antibody response to human gamma globulin (HGG) and Aeromonas salmonicida (AS) in control and long-term thymectomized rainbow trout was individually monitored in 120 fish. The fish responded poorly to HGG and no memory response was observed. There was no difference in response between control fish and fish which had been thymectomized for 5 months before immunization. However, 9-month thymectomized fish had lower titres than controls. The response to AS was vigorous and significant memory was demonstrated after a second injection. There was no difference in response between control and thymectomized fish. The individual variation in response was not related to body size, antigen dose, sex or reproductive state. The results are discussed in terms of the thymus dependency or independency of antigens in fish, and the role and life span of T cell subsets, such as ‘helper’ and ‘;suppressor’ cells.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Intracraniale Verkalkungen kommen bei zahlreichen Krankheiten vor.
Notes: Summary Intracranial calcifications are attributed to many diseases. The globus pallidus is almost always the site of bilateral idiopathic calcium deposits. Computed tomography is superior to conventional skull radiographs in detecting intracranial calcifications. Patients had symptoms that were often explained by other findings. Basal ganglia calcification alone is not a nosological entity and does not justify invasive diagnostic procedures.

Notes: Summary Pulmonary to systemic flow ratios (Qp/Qs) were estimated by quantitative radionuclide angiocardiography (QRAC) in 135 children. The Qp/Qs ratios were derived from pulmonary time/activity curves using a gamma variate model. Eighty-five of these children also had Qp/Qs ratios estimated by oximetry at cardiac catheterization. Left-to-right shunts with a Qp/Qs range of 1.2 to 3.0 were detected and quantitated by radionuclide angiography with an accuracy similar to that for oximetry. The correlation between Qp/Qs, determined by QRAC and by oximetry was good (r=.93; SEE .31). This relatively noninvasive technique has now been used to estimate the Qp/Qs ratio in 34 children with a clinically suspected left-to-right shunt, and postoperatively in 16 cases with residual murmurs; it has obviated the need for catheterization in many of these patients. The technique may also be used serially to determine changes in the Qp/Qs ratio in patients with known left-to-right shunts.
