Notes: An analytical equation is derived for the error heat flow due to thermal imbalance between the hot plate and the guard in the case of an infinite strip. Finite element calculations show that the same equation can be used for circular plates with negligible error. The equation can also be extended to square plates if corner effects are neglected. By combining the present solution and a previous one by Woodside [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 28, 1033 (1957)], an expression is derived for the effect of the distortion of heat-flow lines near the gap even when thermal balance is obtained. The availability of this expression opens the possibility of using larger gaps than previously, to reduce thermal imbalance errors. The use of two-material specimens (test material over hot plate, insulant over guard and gap) would lessen thermal imbalance errors, material requirements, and edge effects.

Notes: [Auszug] The upper atmospheres of the four Solar System giant planets exhibit high temperatures that cannot be explained by the absorption of sunlight. In the case of Saturn the temperatures predicted by models of solar heating are ∼200 K, compared to temperatures of ∼400 K ...

Notes: Abstract Immunogold labelling was used to study the distribution of acyl carrier protein (ACP) in Escherichia coli and a variety of plant tissues. In E. coli, ACP is distributed throughout the cytoplasm, confirming the observation of S. Jackowski et al. (1985, J. Bacteriol., 162, 5–8_. In the mesocarp of Avocado (Persea americana) and maturing seeds of oil-seed rape (Brassica napus cv. Jet Neuf), over 95% of the ACP is localised to plastids. The protein is almost exclusively located in the chloroplasts of leaf material from oil-seed rape. Approximately 80% of the gold particles associated with the ACP were further localized to the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast. Since acetyl-CoA carboxylase has been reported to be localized to the thylakoid membrane (C.G. Kannangara and C.J. Jensen, 1975, Eur. J. Biochem., 54, 25–30), these results are consistent with the view that the two sequential enzymes in fatty-acid synthesis are in close spacial proximity.
