Notes: Ichthyosis bullosa of Siemens (IBS, MIM 146800) is a unique congenital ichthyosis characterized by mild epidermal hyperkeratosis over flexural areas, blister formation and the development of superficially denuded areas of hyperkeratotic skin. It is clinically difficult to distinguish severe IBS from mild bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma (BCIE, MIM 113800). In the current literature, 19 IBS families with keratin 2e (K2e) mutations have been reported, despite only five IBS families having been reported before the first identification of K2e mutation in 1994. We studied four patients from three Japanese IBS families. They had previously been misdiagnosed as having BCIE before the correct diagnosis was made after mutation detection. To detect the pathogenic mutations, we performed direct sequencing of the entire coding regions of KRT2E encoding K2e in the patients and healthy family members. K2e mutations, a 1469T→C transition (L490P) and a 1477G→A transition (E493K) within the conserved 2B helix termination motif of the rod domain were detected in the families and the definite diagnosis of IBS was made in the four cases. The present results indicate that IBS is not such a rare entity as was previously thought, and accurate diagnosis is now available by mutation analysis.

Notes: A multi-stage stamping process of one-piece automobile steel wheels from tubes wasdeveloped to decrease the loss of material for the blanking. In this process, the tube is nosed into acup with a central hole, and then the taper bottom and side wall of the cup are formed into disk andrim portions of the wheel, respectively. The tube is produced by bending a rectangular sheet into atube and by welding both edges of the bent sheet to prevent the loss of material for the blanking. The stamping sequence of the one-piece wheels was designed by finite element simulation. Thecentral hole of the cup was decreased to a desired diameter of the hub hole without buckling andwrinkling by a 5-stages nosing operation. The taper bottom of the cup was reversely drawn, andthen was flared without folding by 2 stages. The wall thickness of the formed wheel was thick andthin in the disk and rim portions, receptively, and thus the requirement of strength of wheels issatisfied. A one-piece wheel having a hub hole was successfully formed by the designed sequencein a miniature experiment

Notes: Summary This study was undertaken to elucidate the relationship between the time of destruction of the external granular layer and subsequent cerebellar abnormalities. Mice were injected s. c. with 30 mg/kg body weight (b. wt.) of cytosine arabinoside on days 2, 3, and 4, on days, 4, 5, and 6, on days 7, 8, and 9, and on days 10, 11, and 12, and designated as group I, II, III, and IV, respectively. In group I, disarrangement of Purkinje cells and heterotopic granule cells in the molecular layer were observed on all lobes of cerebellum. Heterotopic granule cells were seen on all lobes in group II, whereas disarrangement of Purkinje cells was observed only in the region from the anterior to middle lobes. In group III, heterotopic granule cells were limited to the area from anterior to middle lobes, but there was no disarrangement of Purkinje cells. Group IV cerebellum did not show abnormal cytoarchitecture. Golgi-Cox studies showed abnormal arborization of Purkinje cells in each experimental group. They were arbitrarily classified into inverted Purkinje cells, lying Purkinje cells, T-shaped Purkinje cells, and poorly arborized Purkinje cells. The earlier the postnatal treatment the more severe were the abnormalities of Purkinje cell dendrite. According to the electron-microscopic study, some glomerular synaptic complexes, which are normally confined to the internal granular layer, were observed even in the molecular layer in groups I, II, and III. Some of the Purkinje cell dentritic spines did not make synapses with parallel fibers in any of the experimental groups. The results indicate that severity of abnormal arborization of Purkinje cells is dependent on the period of destruction of the external granular layer. Formation of heterotopic granule cells was dependent on the destruction of the external granular layer up to day 10 after birth.

Notes: Summary Pregnant mice were treated with cytosine arabinoside on days 13.5 and 14.5 of pregnancy. Brains of the offspring were studied histologically. The matrix layer of the embryonic brains was extensively destroyed 12h after the injection of cytosine arabinoside, but regenerated partially on day 17 of gestation. In the cerebral cortex of 1-, 3-, and 5-day-old treated mice, abnormal clusters of young neurons were found on the surface of the developing cerebral cortex. Some clusters still had a supply of immature neurons from the remnants of the regenerated matrix layer. After 20 days, the clusters became gradually indistinct, although some vestigial groups of neurons were observed even after 120 days. In the hippocampus of young mice, the pyramidal cells decreased in number and were disarranged. Heterotopic pyramidal cell masses were found in the stratum radiatum and in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus. Apical dendrites of pyramidal cells exhibited abnormal arborization. It was demonstrated by3H-thymidine autoradiography that young neurons in the abnormal clusters in the cerebral cortex were those produced in the matrix layer regenerated after the destructive change by cytosine arabinoside.

Notes: Summary The renal effects of nine, 8-substituted derivatives of 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate were studied in anesthetized mongrel dogs. Infusion of the compounds into a renal artery resulted in an increase of renal blood flow without any effect on blood pressure. Diuretic and natriuretic effects are evident with 6 of the 9 derivatives. As these 8-substituted analogues exert renal effects in a manner similar to that seen with the parent nucleotide, cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate, they may serve as useful pharmacological agents in vivo.

Notes: This paper described an experimental study on the friction stir welding of dissimilarmetal between commercially pure titanium (CPTi) and magnesium alloy AZ31B (Mg). Butt-weldsproduced at various tool rotation speeds were evaluated by the observation of the weld surfaceappearance, X-ray radiographic test, tensile test, SEM and EDX analysis. The main results obtainedare as follows. Butt-joint welding of the CPTi plate to the Mg plate was easily and successfullyachieved. The ignition of Mg occurred during welding at the tool rotation speeds over 1200rpm.The fragments of CPTi existed in a continuous form in Mg matrix. The tool rotation speed of1200rpm attained the maximum tensile strength of a joint, which was about 75% of that of Mg basemetal. Fracture occurred at the weld interface in most joint. EDX analysis revealed that Al in theMg diffused into CPTi through the weld interface and MgO existed at the interface. It seems thatthe decrease in Al concentration in the Mg and MgO formation around the weld interface caused thelow tensile strength of the joints

Notes: The aluminium alloy and mild steel sheets were joined with mechanical clinching.Deforming behaviour of the two sheets during the clinching was observed from finite elementsimulation and an experiment to avoid defects. The fracture of the upper sheet, necking andseparation are caused by the small upper sheet thickness in the thick total thickness, the small lowersheet thickness in the thick total thickness and the small lower sheet thickness, respectively. Thejoining range for the combination of the upper aluminium alloy sheet of and the lower steel sheet ofis larger than that of the reverse combination. The effect of the difference between the flow stressesof the two sheets on the deformation behaviour was examined

Notes: A forming sequence of one-piece automobile steel wheels without welding was designed. In this forming process, the one-piece wheel was formed from a circular blank only by multi-stagestamping operations, and a deeply drawn cup was formed into the wheel. Two humps of the rimflange for fixing the tire were formed in the flaring and flanging stages. The humps of the rim in theopening and outer side were formed by buckling the inner flange of the rim, and by swelling the outerflange with an upper die having a short land, respectively. In addition, the number of stages wasconsiderably reduced from 16 stages to only 9 stages by combining the deep drawing and ironingstages and by adding a holding die in the flaring stages. The forming sequence of the one-piece wheelswas evaluated by both finite element simulation and miniature experiment
