    Notizen: Nitrous oxide concentrations (V/V) at the delivery Rotameters block, nasal mask, pharynx and venous blood, were compared. There was a dilution of approximately 50% of the delivered nitrous oxide at the nasal mask which was further reduced in the pharynx. Venous blood concentrations 10 minutes after inhalation of nitrous oxide were low but as would be calculated from pharyngeal concentrations. After 5 minutes of oxygenation venous blood nitrous oxide concentrations were still relatively high. A total of 92% of subjects experienced a satisfactory effect with 30% nitrous oxide or less in the pharynx.

    Notizen: In a study of male rat fertility male Wistar albino rats were exposed to 0.5% nitrous oxide/air mixtures (v/v) for 30 days and control rats were exposed to oil-free air for the same time period. Thereafter each male was mated with three nulliparous female rats and mated again with three more nulliparous rats after a 6-month recovery period. The offspring were weighed and measured for 8 weeks postnatally. There was a significant reduction in mean litter size of the female rats mated with the male rats directly after the nitrous oxide exposure period. The offspring from the female rats mated with the males directly after the exposure period were significantly smaller in size than the control group. These results show a reversible reduction in male Wistar rat fertility, after exposure to 0.5% nitrous oxide in air (v/v), as well as a postnatal growth depression.

    Notizen: During surveys of sugarcane fields in western and central Cuba from December 2001 to March 2003, the delphacid planthopper Saccharosydne saccharivora was the most prevalent of the Auchenorrhyncha fauna surveyed. Individuals of S. saccharivora collected tested positive for the sugarcane yellow leaf phytoplasma (SCYLP). Saccharosydne saccharivora were reared in cages and used for experimental transmission studies of SCYLP. The S. saccharivora were given acquisition-access feeds of 72 h on SCYLP-infected canes collected from the field followed by an inoculation-access period of 15 days on healthy sugarcane seedlings. Symptoms of yellow leaf syndrome developed on 24 out of 36 plants, 7–12 months postinoculation. None of the 36 healthy seedlings that were inoculated with S. saccharivora fed on phytoplasma-free sugarcane developed symptoms. All phytoplasma-positive sugarcane and S. saccharivora samples showed identical RFLP patterns and had 99·89% similarity in their 16S/23S spacer-region sequences, but only 92·6–93·6% similarity with other phytoplasmas. Sequences were deposited with GenBank [accession numbers: 〈accessionId ref="info:ddbj-embl-genbank/AY725237"〉AY725237 (S. saccharivora) and 〈accessionId ref="info:ddbj-embl-genbank/AY257548"〉AY257548 (sugarcane)]. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the phytoplasmas from sugarcane and S. saccharivora are putative members of a new 16Sr phytoplasma group. This is the first report of vector transmission of a phytoplasma associated with sugarcane yellow leaf syndrome and the first time that S. saccharivora has been shown to vector a phytoplasma.

    Notizen: Rationale Previous data have suggested that glutathione-S-transferase (GST) genotypes are important in determining the rate of lung function growth in childhood. This effect was most marked in Caucasian children with asthma.Objectives We investigated the association of lung function with GSTM1, GSTP1 and GSTT1 genotypes in Caucasian families with asthma.Methods Four hundred and eighteen children and 316 parents from 224 Caucasian families were recruited via a child with asthma, the proband. Associations between lung function and GST genotype were determined using multilevel models.Results There were no observed associations between lung function and GST genotype in parents. However, in the children, the GSTP1 val105/val105 and GSTM1 null genotypes were associated with significantly higher forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and FVC values as percentage of predicted. This effect was not statistically significant in the probands but was marked in their siblings in whom GSTP1 val105/val105 was associated with 9.4% higher FEV1 and 10.7% higher FVC (P=0.005 and 0.001, respectively). The GSTM1 null genotype was associated with a 6.7% higher FEV1 and 4.1% higher FVC (P=0.003 and 0.063, respectively). These effects remained significant after correcting for the confounders of individual atopic status, tobacco smoke exposure and familial aggregation of lung function values.Conclusions GSTM1 and GSTP1 genotypes are important determinants of lung function in childhood. The smaller differences seen in probands are predicted by a simple model in which more rapid decline in lung function is seen in these individuals.

    Notizen: A study was made to establish the value of the leucocyte aggregation test (LAT) in drug allergy using penicillin antigen. The antigen-induced human peripheral blood leucocyte aggregation was measured quantitatively. The results obtained have been compared with the leucocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) in patients with or without delayed penicillin allergy. Among forty-four penicillin-allergic subjects and thirty-six control subjects, LAT was found positive in respectively 70.5 and 30.5% (P 〈 0.001) whereas LMIT was found positive in respectively 56.8 and 50% of the patients. These results were confirmed by multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), using a computer. Furthermore, this method, enables a more comprehensive and reliable interpretation of the tests, by the help of various quantitative and qualitative criteria.It is concluded that LAT shows more discrimination than the LMIT in distinguishing a penicillin-allergic population from a non-allergic one. In addition, LAT offers great technical advantages over the LMIT for the diagnosis of drug allergy.

    Notizen: To most Frenchmen of the revolutionary generation the south conjured up a stereotype image of militant royalism in which bizarrely accoutred peasants followed ci-devant seigneurs and priests into battle and murder gangs toiled under a burning sun. The principal weakness of such a view lies not in the factual detail nor even in the presumption that the entire population was insurgent, but in its essentially linear perspective. As a recent historian has observed, the south can be characterized not only by its fervent royalist commitment but also by its predilection for the politics of extremes. The complicating and exacerbating factor in this southern counter-revolutionary equation was the presence of a parallel and equally uncompromising loyalty to the Republic. Of course, both stances were rationalizations whose ideological content needs careful weighing, but their interaction in small and often volatile communities provided counter-revolution with a dynamic which perpetuated confrontation and drove each side to extremes of savagery and fanaticism.
