Notes: Introduction:  Endothelial dysfunction and impaired angiogenesis are connected to ageing. However, the mechanisms involved in age-related alterations are not fully elucidated, whereby reduced VEGF-expression and decreased mobilization of circulating endothelial progenitor cells are suggested as possible causes. When cultured in vitro, endothelial cells often enter a growth arrest phase called ‘cellular senescence’ that is consistent with many changes in age-related vascular disease. Based on the decreasing lifespan observed in high yielding dairy cows, a hypothesis has been formulated that these cows, due to their enormous metabolic performance, show an accelerated process of ageing, resulting in typical production-related diseases, particularly lameness. As a basis for further research into the role of endothelial cell biology in high producing cattle, the aim of this study was to set up a model of endothelial ageing. As a first step, the role of angiogenesis in the functional adaptation of the microvasculature of the bovine pododerma was examined.Material and methods:  Scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts of healthy juvenile and adult claws as well as pathologically altered claws, and routine light microscopy of pododermal serial sections was compared to an in vitro model of angiogenesis based on cultured bovine microvascular endothelial cells. For detection of angiogenic molecular control mechanisms effective in both, the pododermal system and our cell culture model, lectin- and immunohistochemistry as well as RT-PCR were carried out. Results and discussion:  In the adolescent and adult claw, sprouting and intussusceptive angioadaptation was demonstrated. Evidence of angiogenic processes was also detected in the pathologically altered claws. Immunolocalization of angiogenic factors within the dermo-epidermal system of the claw was established. The detected angioadaptation may be visible expression of the increased metabolic demands of the claw caused by the growing body-weight-load. Increase of the pododermal vascular density via angiogenesis was also the connectional reparative principle in pathologically altered claws.

Notes: Abstract K-vacancy production probabilitiesP K (b) were measured with gas and solid targets byK-x-ray particle coincidences (impact parameterb is determined by the particle detection angle) in the region of light (Z P ≃Z T ≃10) up to intermediate heavy (Z P ≃Z T ≃36) collision systems. The measuredP K (b) reveal a very strong difference in shape between solid and gas targets independent ofZ. Only theP K (b) measured with gas targets and those measured with solid targets at very small impact parameters show reasonable good agreement with the 2pπ x-2pσ rotational coupling model. At largeb theP K (b) from solid targets are strongly influenced by a multiple collision effect, where projectileL-vacancies seem to be produced in collisions beforeK-vacancy production. However, this effect cannot be understood just by a two collision process whereL-vacancy production and 2pπ x-2pσ rotational coupling occurs in consecutive collisions.

Notes: Summary This paper summarizes the recent research on problems of the so-called colonization cycle as one aspect of the migration and flight behaviour of freshwater insects. New results are presented and the applied methods described and discussed. In general the research on this phenomenon shows that the colonization cycle can not only be seen as a type of compensatory flight behaviour, but also as an expression of the winter survival strategy of water insects in high mountainous areas. It opens up the possibility of exploiting ecologically different biotopes such as living in coastal streams and oligohaline brackish water estuaries.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we establish a forward error analysis of the generalized complete Horner scheme for a polynomial $$p = \sum {a_j X^{n - j} } $$ with pivotal pointsz 1, ...,z n . The error analysis is based on the linearization method whose fundamental tools are systems of linear error equations and associated condition numbers which yield optimal bounds of the possible errors under data perturbations and rounding errors in floating point arithmetic. For Horner's scheme the bounds may be calculated by simple recurrences. The ordinary complete Horner scheme is characterized byz=z 1=...=z n . In contrast to the hitherto known error estimates for this special case our new optimal bounds for the polynomialp atz differ from those for the polynomial $$p_a = \sum {\left| {a_j } \right|X^{n - j} } $$ at |z| and thus take into account the possible partial cancellation of terms. The error estimates are illustrated by a series of numerical examples.

Notes: Summary The publication is based on a group of 29 patients with infected medullary nail osteosyntheses. They are part of a completed and controlled series of 96 cases of infected femur pseudarthroses of different genesis. The characteristic anamnestic, clinical, and therapeutic features of femur osteomyelitis following medullary nailing are shown. The analysis shows that infection complications can frequently be traced to dubious or false indications for nail osteosynthesis or to an imperfect nailing technique. Compared to infected pseudarthroses following plate osteosynthesis, the formation of osseous defects due to sequestration is less following infected medullary nailing, thus bony support of the main fragments is usually maintained. Spreading of the infection in the sense of a medullary space phlegmon and endosteal sequestration are characteristic. The basic forms of therapy are described: A nail which reliably stabilizes can remain in place despite the presence of infection; with the assistance of such additional measures as debridement, osteoplasty, local chemotherapy, and continuous drainage, bony bridging can be achieved. Unstable intramedullary supports require removal of the medullary nail, reaming of the medullary space for the purpose of endosteal debridement, and stable reosteosynthesis. Due to the danger of osseous circulatory disturbance, fixateur externe osteosynthesis must be preferred for the femur despite its biomechanical disadvantages. Differentiated selection of the specific external fixation arrangement depends on the infection activity, extent, and anatomic location of the osteomyelitic focus and the function of the joints. In individual cases sufficiently dimensioned internal plate osteosynthesis is appropriate, despite the danger of possibly provoking disruption of the periosteal vascularity of the cortical bone. We reject renewed medullary nailing following previous infected medullary nail osteosynthesis. Long-term results are satisfactory with respect to subjective symptoms, the function of adjacent joints, bone consolidation, and loading. In the chronic stage, however, widely branching fistula systems and defective osseous cavities can lead to therapy-resistant problems.
