Notes: A cutting experiment was carried out on a sward of S23 perennial ryegrass to study the effect of different defoliation regimes on regrowth and the factors affecting regrowth. The defoliation frequencies and intensities encompassed the range commonly found on continuously stocked pastures. The defoliation regimes produced swards of contrasting growth form with regrowth characteristics which differed in respect of senescence loss, fall in water-soluble carbohydrate concentration, residual leaf area index, photosynthesis per unit leaf area index and photosynthesis per unit area of land. Regrowth was most closely related to the latter. These results were used to interpret data for net canopy photosynthesis of continuously grazed pastures.

Notes: Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) was sown as an intercrop with oats (Avena sativa L.) at 0, 30, 60, 90 and 240 oats plants m−2 in May in 1999 and 2000 in Alberta, Canada. Forage yield and quality were measured at 10-d intervals between 35 and 88 d after planting (DAP). Yield is defined as the biomass above 6 cm of the soil surface. The dry-matter (DM) yield of berseem clover in sole crops increased by 5–10 g m−2 d−1 between 35 and 55 DAP and then increased by 21–28 g m−2 d−1 between 55 and 75 DAP. The DM yields of oats sown at 240 plants m−2 increased by 26–28 g m−2 d−1 over the whole period from 35 to 75 DAP. Oats were the dominant component in the intercrops, even at low densities of oats. Berseem clover grown with 60 oats plants m−2 received only 0·24 of the incident light when shading by oats peaked at 65 DAP. DM yields of berseem clover in intercrops with 60 oats plants m−2 averaged 0·14–0·32 of the yields of berseem clover sole crops. Between 35 and 88 DAP in 2000, the crude protein (CP) concentration of berseem clover sole crops declined linearly from 310 to 180 g kg−1 DM, and the CP concentration of oats exhibited a quadratic response, declining from 350 g kg−1 DM at tillering to 110 g kg−1 DM at the soft dough stage. The mean CP concentration of berseem clover in intercrops with 60 oats plants m−2 was 25 g kg−1 less than in berseem clover sole crops, indicating that competition by oats reduced the CP concentration of berseem clover. At later sampling dates, CP and DM yields of intercrops with oats at 60 plants m−2 equalled those with oats at 240 plants m−2. The addition of berseem clover to oats in intercrops at 60 oats plants m−2 reduced the neutral-detergent fibre concentration by 30 g kg−1 DM compared with oats alone. Oats were very competitive as a companion crop for berseem clover. Adding berseem clover to oats increased forage quality and may provide for increased intake and digestibility of forage to support higher livestock productivity.

Notes: Abstract— The fraction that sediments between 2 × 105g-min and 6 × 106g-min from dilute dispersions of rat brain in 0.32 m-sucrose is a microsomal fraction with very little contamination by myelin. A crude microsomal fraction prepared in the same way from rat spinal cord contains more myelin than microsomes. Centrifugation of the crude microsomal fraction in 0.85 m-sucrose gave a floating fraction, an infranatant fraction (purified microsomes) and a small pellet. The purified microsomes contained very little myelin as judged by electron microscopy and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The lipid composition resembled that of spinal cord myelin except that the purified microsomes contained relatively less cholesterol and ethanolamine plasmalogens. The content of galactolipids was much greater in spinal cord microsomes than in brain microsomes. The spinal cord CDP-ethanol-amine:diglyceride ethanolaminephosphotransferase activity (EC 2.7.8.1) was concentrated in the purified microsomes.A spinal cord myelin fraction isolated from the 2 × 105g-min pellet was quite pure as judged by electron microscopy, enzyme activities and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. No NADPH-cyto-chrome c reductase activity (EC 1.6.2.3) could be detected in the purified myelin. The ethanolaminephosphotransferase specific activity was about 5% of that found in the purified microsomal fraction. The protein content was 25% by weight for spinal cord myelin and 31% for brain myelin. Of the total spinal cord 2′,3′-cyclic nucleotide-3′-phosphohydrolase activity, 16% was lost from the crude myelin during purification, 21% was recovered in the purified myelin, and 11% was found in the floating fraction from the crude microsomes. The purified myelin and microsomal fractions from spinal cord were relatively pure. Additional myelin was recovered in the floating fraction from the crude microsomes.

Notes: A case of massive lymphangioma arising from the axilla and complicating a breech delivery is described. From research of the literature it is believed that this is the only such case recorded.
