Notes: Intra- and inter-sample similarities for four populations of the annual grass weed Phalaris minor from Haryana state, India, were examined using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) DNA markers. Levels of polymorphism within and between populations were low in comparison with values reported from other grassy weed species. Analysis of inter-population similarities allowed a partial differentiation of the four populations and of pairs of populations classified by cropping system. Analysis of the intra-population similarity data showed a weak but consistent and statistically significant negative correlation between the molecular similarity of seedlings and the physical distance between their mother plants over distances up to 40 m (the maximum separation tested) in all four populations. The consistency of the observed relationship between molecular similarity and physical separation, and the differences in cultivation practices at the four sites, suggested that the relationship may be a result of localized out-crossing, rather than an effect of localized seed rain. The results of the analyses are discussed in relation to the potential for evolution of multiple traits in the weed in response to changes in the wheat production system in the region.

Notes: Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and insulin display opposite effects in regulating programmed cell death during vertebrate retina development; the former induces apoptosis while the latter prevents it. In the present study we investigated coordinated actions of TGF-β and insulin in an organotypic culture system of early postnatal mouse retina. Addition of exogenous TGF-β resulted in a significant increase in cell death whereas exogenous insulin attenuated apoptosis and was capable of blocking TGF-β-induced apoptosis. This effect appeared to be modulated via insulin-induced transcriptional down-regulation of TGF-β receptor II levels. The analysis of downstream signalling molecules also revealed opposite effects of both factors; insulin provided survival signalling by increasing the level of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein expression and phosphorylation and down-regulating caspase 3 activity whereas pro-apoptotic TGF-β signalling reduced Bcl-2 mRNA levels and Bcl-2 phosphorylation and induced the expression of TGF-induced immediate-early gene (TIEG), a Krüppel-like zinc-finger transcription factor, mimicking TGF-β activity.

Notes: Inscriptions on tombstones provide us with information about the family and society of the deceased. Through a reading of these inscriptions the individual is no longer anonymous. In addition to names, grave inscriptions often contain information on an individual's status and profession, offering us insights into the life of a community which include different classes and professions. The information emphasised in grave inscriptions reveals the values of a society and its traditions. This study investigates the corpus of Hebrew inscriptions on tombstones in Aden.
