Notes: A stirring mill, an ultrasonic bath and a high-speed shearing emulsifier were adopted tomodify the surface characteristics of nanodiamond (ND) respectively. The ζ-potential, sizedistribution and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) of ND were measured to evaluateits properties. Results show that the ζ-potential of ND modified with SHP (either byMechano-chemical Modification or Ultrasonic measurement) drops sharply. Results also show thatthe rotating speed of the emulsifier exerts little influence on the size D5 but great influence on thesize D95 of ND

Notes: Mechano-chemical modification (MCM) of nanodiamond was conducted with a stirringmill. A new type of silane coupling agent, GW was chosen as its modifier. X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) were employed to study the surfaceproperties of nanodiamond before and after treatments. Results showed that the peaks related toGW and the ball (for example, Fe, Si and Cl) appeared obviously after its MCM on their XPSspectra and mostly disappeared after its further purification with acid X or Y. A new peak located at1382.48cm-1 was very strong after further purification. It was proven by their FT-IR spectra

Notes: In the present study, zirconia ceramic was ground with a resin-bonded diamond wheel on aprecision surface grinding machine. Grinding temperatures generated at the wheel-workpiece contactzone were measured using a sandwiched foil thermocouple, and the net consumed grinding powerswere also measured. The energy partition to the diamond abrasives was estimated using measuredgrinding temperatures and powers. Based on the energy partition values obtained from the analyzedresults, the diamond tip temperature was calculated and found to be over 1000°C if the circular graincontact of radius was less than a critical value for ductile field grinding of zirconia ceramic

Notes: The uniform distribution and the stability of the substrate temperature are the mostimportant factors that deeply affect the quality and the growth rate of diamond films. In this paper, cemented carbide cutters were chosen for substrates, the 3D finite element (FE) model of filamentsand substrates was developed in ANSYS 8.0, the calculated results show that the substratetemperature is influenced by the filament temperature, filaments diameter, the quantity of thefilaments and the distance between the filaments and the substrates. The 3D finite element model offilaments and substrates also provides a basis for selecting the parameters to obtain uniform diamondfilms in miniature EACVD system

Notes: High producing cost is one of the important reasons that silicon nitride ceramics can’t be widely used today. In this paper, one kind of commercial low-cost silicon nitride powder was used as raw material. High density samples were obtained through pressureless sintering with alumina, yttria and magnesia as sintering aids. The Si3N4 material was tested and the erosion wear rate was measured. It was found that the low cost and dense Si3N4 ceramics exhibited a better erosion wear resistance than the hot-press ceramics produced with the UBE Si3N4 powder and much better then the Cr-26 cast iron. The worn surface was observed with the SEM and the erosion wear mechanisms were analyzed

Notes: In this study, rock minerals of natural stone were finely polished with loose abrasive andELID technology to study the surface behaviours. After these rock specimens were polished to ultrasmooth surfaces, the surface characteristics were observed with microscope and analyzed withsurface texture analyzer. It was found that the calcite and fluorite minerals could be polished to highsurface quality with fine loose aluminum oxide abrasive. But ultra smooth quartz surface must befinished with superabrasive ELID polishing technology. The weakly acidic coolant might bringchemical damage to calcite and fluorite minerals under the condition of ELID polishing process

Notes: A novel exfoliated polyurethane (PU)/clay Interpenetrating Polymer Networks (IPNs) nanocomposite has been synthesized with polyurethane and organoclay. MTPAC is used as swelling agent to treat Na-montmorillonite for forming organoclay. The results indicate that there is very good compatibility between organoclay and PU. Nanoscale silicate dispersion was analyzed by XRD. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites have been measured by tensile testing machine. The nanocomposites show obviously improved physical and mechanical properties when compared with the pure polymer. Additionally, PU /MTPAC- clay shows lower water absorption properties than pure PU do. In addition, the reinforcing and intercalating mechanism of silicate layers in polyurethane matrix are discussed

Notes: A super-absorbent polymer (SAP) is synthesized with polystyrene foam (PSF) and sodium acrylate through inverse emulsion polymerization. The influence of experiment conditions such as solvent of PS, composition of comonomers, initiator and cross-linking agent on the absorption capacity of the resins are discussed. The maximum water absorption rate of the prepared SAP is about 1600g/g

Notes: In this study, grinding of Si3N4, SiC, and Al2O3 ceramics under the condition of electrolyticin-process dressing (ELID) system was investigated. The surface appearances of these engineeringceramics during the ELID grinding process were attentively observed to describe the formation of finelyfinished surfaces. Based on the analysis of material properties and detailed micro-observation of groundsurfaces, it can be concluded that the material removal mechanism of engineering ceramic is closelyrelated to its mechanical properties. The silicon nitride ceramic was most easily machined to precisionsurface among these three engineering ceramics

Notes: Failure of aluminium foams due to dynamic indentation and penetration is very common intheir application such as light-weight structural sandwich panels, packing materials and energyabsorbing devices. This requires a sound understanding of deformation and energy absorptionmechanisms of the aluminium foams as well as the effect of impact velocity. In this study, a finiteelement analysis using ABAQUS is conducted for the dynamic indentation/penetration process ofaluminium foams under a rigid flat-headed indenter. The indenter is pushed into the foam either at aconstant velocity or with an initial velocity. Two mechanisms exist: compression of the foam ahead ofthe indenter and fracture along the indenter edge. Effect of impact velocity is noted on the size of alocalized deformation and the total energy absorbed
