Notizen: Organosilane precursor molecules, here (aminoethylaminomethyl)phenethyltrimethoxysilane, or PEDA, are chemisorbed onto a Si surface forming a monolayer thick film. These films are patterned using the scanning tunneling microscope to locally modify the chemical reactivity and are then used as a template for selective electroless plating of a thin Ni film. Reactive ion etching in a C2F6/O2 mixture transfers this pattern into the substrate. Improvement over previous lithographic performance is achieved by growing the films on a passivated and lightly oxidized Si surface, optimizing the patterning conditions, and improving the metallization and etch chemistry. In this way, we have generated deep trenches on the order of 15±4 nm width, with edge roughness of 3 nm. We believe this demonstrates the resolution limiting factors of this lithographic process. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Summary The accurate measurement of the size of skin wounds and ulceration is important for comparing the efficiency of treatment modalities and for monitoring progress in the individual patient. Although various methods of differing sophistication are in use, many of the common simpler techniques lack accuracy and reliability. We describe a new technique of ulcer measurement which uses video image recording, capture and computer analysis. A method of correcting for limb convexity in a two-dimensional image is presented. The method has an overall accuracy of 1–82% and a clinical precision of 3–41%, both of which are significantly better than acetate tracings or photographic methods. The technique is simple and rapid, and once established it incurs minimal ongoing costs.

Notizen: Analysis of the atomic arrangement in anhydrous aminoguanidinium hexafluorozirconate, CN4H8ZrF6, reported by Bukvetskii, Gerasimenko & Davidovich [Koord. Khim. (1990), 16, 1479–1484], led to the prediction that it is a new ferroelectric [Abrahams, Mirsky & Nielson (1996). Acta Cryst. B52, 806–809]. Initial attempts to verify the prediction were inconclusive because of the variety of closely related materials produced under the original preparation conditions. Clarification of these conditions led to the formation of pure CN4H8ZrF6 and the growth of single crystals with dimensions as large as 7 × 7 × 2 mm. Highly reproducible calorimetric and dielectric permittivity anomalies reveal the Curie temperature Tc = 383 (1) K. At this temperature, the heat capacity Cp exhibits an entropy change of 0.7 (1) J mol−1 K−1, while the relative permittivity εr exhibits an inflection and the dielectric loss a distinct peak; the dielectric anomaly at Tc is observed only at the lowest (0.1–1 kHz) frequencies used. Dielectric hysteresis is demonstrable at 295 K under the application of ∼1 MV m−1 alternating fields and remains observable at all T 〈 Tc but not at T ≥ Tc; the prediction of ferroelectricity is hence confirmed. The value of the spontaneous polarization Ps is 0.45 (9) × 10−2 C m−2 at 298 K, with piezoelectric coefficient d33 = 1.9 (5) pC N−1 and pyroelectric coefficient p3 = 4 (1) µC m−2 K−1. Tilts of less than ∼11° by the two symmetry-independent CN4H{}_{8}^{2+} ions, combined with rotations of ∼20° or less by the N—NH3 and C—(NH2)2 groups about the central C—N bond in each cation, as all H atoms rotate into or become symmetrically distributed about the planes at z = 0 or ½, allow them to conform to mirror symmetry via polar atomic displacements of ∼0.4 Å or less by N or C, and of 0.7 Å or less by H. Corresponding displacements of less than 0.08 Å within the two symmetry-independent ZrF{}_{6}^{2-} anions also result in mirror symmetry, satisfying the structural criteria required for the development of ferroelectricity.

Notizen: [Auszug] The foundation of the continental crust is the Precambrian shield that crops out in much of the southern part of the Nares Strait region (Fig. I)15'19. In both Ellesmere Island and Greenland the shield consists of a high grade gneissic and metasedi-mentary terrain; a distinctive suite of acidic to ...

Notizen: Abstract The effect of Al on the growth of plants derived from the F3 generation of a cross between Al tolerant (Waalt) and Al sensitive (Warigal) wheat cultivars, grown in low ionic strength nutrient solutions, were assessed by a number of methods viz; root length and haematoxylin stain after 3 days exposure to Al and plant top and root yields, and root length and visual assessment for Al damage after 4 weeks growth. Of these methods haematoxylin stain (3 days) and visual assessment at 4 weeks identified the same plants as being sensitive or tolerant to Al and clearly segregated the 2 populations. Consequently these 2 methods were used as ‘standard’ techniques to determine the ability of the other methods to distinguish between tolerant and sensitive plants. The ratio of plant top: root yields clearly segregated the 2 populations. The 2 populations could not be clearly distinguished based on plant top or root yields, or on root length either after 3 days or 4 weeks exposure to Al. Within the population of tolerant plants, root length was significantly correlated with root weight (r2=0.86) and top weight (r2=0.71). None of these relationships were significant for the population of sensitive plants. These techniques were applied in a number of separate experiments on the F2 and F3 populations from a Waalt × Warigal cross. The results indicate that Al tolerance in wheat is inherited by a single gene and that this gene has incomplete dominance.

Notizen: Abstract The results from many experiments conducted over 5 years to determine the tolerance of 34 plant species (87 cultivars) to aluminium (Al) are summarised. All experiments were conducted in a temperature-controlled glasshouse using a low-ionic-strength solution culture technique. The activity of Al3+ (μM) at which top yields were reduced by 50% (AlRY50) was determined for each cultivar. The species Bromus wildenowii, Cynosurus cristatus, Hordeum vulgare, Triticum aestivum (cvs Warigal, Scout, Sonora-63), Avena byzantina, Arabidopsis thaliana, Lycopersicon esculentum and Nicotiana plumbaginifolia were all very sensitive to Al (AlRY50〈1). The species Poa pratense, Lolium perenne (NZ-derived cultivars), Lotus corniculatus, Avena sativa (cvs West, Carbeen, Camellia and Coolabah), Triticum aestivum (cvs Cardinal and Waalt), Allium cepa and Asparagus officinalis were sensitive to Al (AlRY50 1–2). The pasture grass species Lolium perenne (Australian and European and derived cultivars), Lolium hybridum and Lolium multiflorum, Dactylis glomerata (Apanui and Kara), Phalaris aquatica, Festuca arundinacea and the pasture legumes species Trifolium pratense, Trifolium repens and Trifolium subterraneum were all moderately sensitive to Al (AlRY50 2–5). Other species that were also moderately sensitive included Triticum aestivum (cvs Atlas-66, BH146, and Carazinho), Avena sativa (cvs Swan and Blackbutt), Avena Strigosa, Petunia x and Phaseolus vulgaris (cvs Red Kidney, Black Turtle and Haricot). The most tolerant species (AlRY50〉5) were (in order of increasing tolerance) Phaseolus vulgaris (cvs Tendergreen, The Prince and Yatescrop), Cucurbita maxima, Dactylis glomerata (cv Wana), Paspalum dilatatum, Lotus pedunculatus, Ehrharta calycina, Medicago sativa, Holcus lanatus, Festuca rubra, Phaseolus lunatus and Agrostis tenuis. Agrostis tenuis was at least twice as tolerant as the next most tolerant species (AlRY50〉30 compared to 15.6).
