Notes: Abstract SG-II, a 8-beam Nd:glass laser with an output energy capability of 6kJ at 1.053μm, was built and direct-drive implosions were successfully performed early in 2000. Both exploding pusher and ablative targets were imploded using glass capsules with diameters of 200 and 500μm, and a wall thickness of about 1μm. The deuterium and tritium (DT) gas pressure filled in these capsules were 2.0 and 0.5MPa, respectively. Sophisticated diagnostics were deployed to measure laser absorption, hot electron temperature and fraction, thermal electron temperature, neutron yields, ion temperature, temporally resolved x-ray images, fuel areal density, alpha particle image, and so on. Significant results, such as neutron yields up to 4 × 109 for exploding pushers with 100-ps laser pulse irradiation and 6 × 108 for ablative targets with 1-ns pulses and clear x-ray images to see the compression process, were obtained. Numerical simulations were conducted to optimize target and laser parameter design and to duplicate the results afterwards with the specific shot parameters used in the experiment.

Notes: Abstract: An effort has been made to search for the decoupled bands in odd-odd 174Re via the 159Tb(20Ne,5n γ)174Re reaction through excitation functions, K x-γ and γ-γ coincidence measurements. The doubly decoupled band and the semidecoupled one have been found in this work. Their quasiparticle configurations are proposed to be π1/2−[541] ⊗ν1/2−[521] and π1/2−[541] ⊗νi 13/2, respectively, according to the characteristics of band structures in this mass region. Another band with strongly coupled character is also reported.

Notes: Abstract: High-spin states in 143Pm have been investigated via the 128Te(19F,4nγ)143Pm reaction using techniques of in-beam γ-spectroscopy. γ-ray singles, γ-γ coincidences, γ-ray anisotropies and DCO ratios have been measured. Based on these measurements, the level scheme of 143Pm has been extended up to an excitation energy of 10535.4 keV, including 48 new γ-rays deexciting 28 new levels. The yrast levels in 143Pm can be understood qualitatively in the framework of a weak-coupling model.

Notes: Abstract: High spin states in 178Ir have been studied via the 152Sm(31P, 5nγ)178Ir reaction through excitation functions, X-γ and γ-γ-t coincidence measurements. According to the band structure characteristics and the measured intraband B(M1)/B(E2) ratios, two rotational bands are identified and assigned to be associated with the πh 9/2⊗νi 13/2 and πh 11/2⊗νi 13/2 configurations, respectively. Both bands show the signature inversion feature.

Notes: Abstract Two atmospheric diffusion models, the box model ad the ATDL (Atmospheric Turbulent and Diffusion Laboratory) model, were used to calculate regional methane (CH4) emissions of rice fields in the Beijing area. Compared with conventional closed chamber measurements, the box model overestimated CH4 emission because of meteorological conditions--the ground inverse layer was not favorable for the application of the model during the rice-growing season. The ATDL model, on the other hand, handled this unfavorable meteorological condition and gave reasonable CH4 emission estimates (about 6.1–8.5 mg m−2 h−1) close to conventional measurements (about 0.3–14.3 mg m−2 h−1) in June, a period generally characterized by significant CH4 emission from rice fields. In September, CH4 emission as measured with closed chambers was negligible (about 0–0.3 mg m−2 h−1), but the ATDL model still calculated it to be about 2.8–5.3 mg m−2 h−1, albeit at a low level and considerably below the June emission level. This discrepancy cannot be explained at present and needs further stuy. Most likely causes are measurement artifacts and/or the presence of minor local CH4 sources (ditches, field depressions) in the study area. The application of atmospheric diffusion models for regional CH4 emission estimation depends greatly on meteorological conditions. Moreover, the models tend to give much more reliable results during periods of rather high CH4 emission. This coincides with the time that such regional CH4 emission estimates are most valuable. The atmospheric diffusion models complement the closed chamber method by providing integrated CH4 emission estimates from 1–100-km2 rice areas. Detailed information about agricultural management of rice fields and other potential CH4 sources within the study region are necessary to better understand the integrated regional emission estimates.
