Spark planed surfaces of pure iron have been investigated using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS), scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Results reveal that as a consequence of spark erosion, phases not originally present, α'- and γ-iron, are formed at the surface of the samples. The limit of carbon content of γ-Fe is estimated from CEMS hyperfine parameters. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
