Notes: Structure of stacking faults formed in pairs in a ZnSe epitaxial layer grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy on a GaAs(001) buffer layer was determined with transmission electron microscopy. Extrinsic type stacking faults were formed on (111) and (1¯1¯1) planes with the same polarity, which was determined by convergent-beam electron diffraction. The two stacking faults meet at a point which is a few atomic layers away from the interface between ZnSe and GaAs. Partial dislocations at the edge of the stacking faults were found to be the Shockley type ones with a Burgers vector of 1/6〈211〉. Probable formation processes of the stacking faults have been discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have carried out modeling of the evolution of silicon solar cell performance following irradiation with high energy protons and electrons. Using the traditional semiempirical expression the solar cell output parameters of a given cell structure could be predicted for various particle energies by expressing the particle fluence as a displacement damage dose. We discuss the extent to which the evolution of different silicon solar cell structures in a radiation environment can be predicted using the software package PC-1D by taking account of the degradation of the minority carrier lifetime and majority carrier concentration in the cell. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A novel “fiber-in-tube” configuration has been applied to the extraction tube of solid phase microextraction (SPME), and the direct coupling of the extraction process to liquid chromatography (LC) has been accomplished for the analysis of n-butylphthalate in wastewater. By using this fiber-in-tube SPME/LC system the preconcentration factor for the phthalate was about 160 with 20 min extraction and no interference peak was observed in the chromatogram. The results also showed the potential applications of this fiber-in-tube SPME/LC for the analysis of sub-ppb level (i.e., lower than 1 ng/mL) of various organic analytes in aqueous sample matrix without a large solvent consumption during the preconcentration process.

Notes: Abstract The Gly71Arg mutation of the hepatic bilirubin UDP glucuronosyltransferase (B-UGT) gene associated with Gilbert syndrome prevails among Japanese and its gene frequency is 0.13. Among 20 patients with acute leukaemia, 4 patients showed intermittent unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia during the course of combined chemotherapy. The Gly71Arg mutation was detected in all 4 patients with hyperbilirubinaemia, but was not found in 16 patients without hyperbilirubinaemia. Two of them were heterozygotes and one was a homozygote for the Gly71Arg mutation, and the other was a compound heterozygote of the Gly71Arg mutation and TA insertion mutation in the TATA box of the B-UGT gene. In addition to the complications leading to hyperbilirubinaemia, including liver damage due to drugs, viral infections or tumour cell infiltrations and alloimmune haemolysis, carrier status for the Gly71Arg mutation should be considered in a patient with leukaemia showing intermittent hyperbilirubinaemia during the course of chemotherapy, especially among Japanese, Koreans and Chinese owing to its prevalence in those populations.
