    Notes: In this article a study of the transmission factor of the Omicron EA125 analyzer equipped with the universal lens is presented. The procedure is based on a model by Cross and Castle [J. Electron Spectrosc. Relat. Phenom. 22, 53 (1981)] and is applicable to every spectrometer which can be operated in the constant analyzer energy (CAE) and in the constant retarding ratio measuring mode. The advantage of the method is its independence on the sample and on the inelastic mean free path of the electrons. We find that the transmission factor for the CAE mode is proportional to Ekin−1 for most measuring setups. This dependence is predicted by theory for an ideal analyzer. Deviations from this behavior are observed if the retarding ratio for a given kinetic energy is too small. The limit value of the retarding ratio for ideal behavior, i.e., an Ekin−1 transmission factor, depends on the analyzer entrance slit aperture which has been selected. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method for a controlled change of the doping level of high-temperature superconductors with ultraviolet radiation is presented. With photoemission it is shown that the exposure of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ samples to the light of a He gas-discharge lamp causes oxygen desorption. From measurements of the Fermi surface, it is found that the oxygen desorption causes a decrease of the doping level of the superconductors. From the desorption cross sections that strongly depend on the photon energy, two different oxygen desorption channels are inferred. This procedure for decreasing the doping level has the advantage that the crystallinity of the sample is not altered and that the doping level can be simultaneously measured by photoelectron spectroscopy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The substitution site of Y and Pb in the cuprate-type high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ is determined in a very direct and unambiguous way by means of angle-scanned x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD). Using XPD as a fingerprinting tool, we conclude that Y occupies the Ca sites and Pb the Bi sites, respectively. Furthermore, low-energy electron diffraction data unequivocally show the presence of the incommensurate lattice modulation which is known for pure Bi2212, but not for sufficiently Pb doped Bi2212. We can, therefore, attribute the reappearance of the modulation directly to the Y doping. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Core-level X-ray photoelectron-diffraction patterns have been measured from cleaved Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (001) surfaces for all elements present in this compound. The incommensurate modulation alongb ([010]) leads to a strong inequivalence ofa- andb-directions for Bi, Sr and Cu photoelectrons, while Ca and O emission show less effect. Ultraviolet-photoemission experiments recording the emission intensity at the Fermi energy over a large solid angle are also presented, providing a direct mapping of the Fermi surface. Ac(2×2) superstructure is observed on the Fermi surface suggesting antiferromagnetic correlations within the Cu−O planes. The effects of the lattice modulation are clearly observable at the Fermi energy, and they are enhanced for binding energies higher than a few tens of meV.

    Notes: Abstract: Full k -maps of the electronic structure near the Fermi level of differently doped cuprates measured with angle-scanned photoelectron spectroscopy are presented. The valence band maximum of the antiferromagnetic insulator Sr2CuO2Cl2, which is taken as a representative of an undoped cuprate, and the Fermi surfaces of overdoped, optimally doped and underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ high-temperature superconductors are mapped in the normal state. The results confirm the existence of large Luttinger Fermi surfaces at high doping with a Fermi surface volume proportional to (1+x), where x is the hole concentration. At very low doping, however, we find that this assumption based on Luttinger's theorem is not fulfilled. This implies a change in the topology of the Fermi surface. Furthermore the intensity of the shadow bands observed on the Fermi surface of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ as a function of the doping is discussed.
