Notes: Abstract During the operation of an industrial-scale membrane electrolysis plant over a number of years, a record was kept of the formation of the byproduct oxygen in the anode gas and chlorate in the anolyte parallel to the decline of the current efficiencies of the main products. It was found that the current efficiencies of the byproducts increase linearly with the declining current efficiencies of the main products, chlorine and caustic soda. Of the two types of anode used, one exhibited considerably more oxygen formation than the other. The high-oxygen anode was associated with distinctly lower chlorate formation than the low-oxygen anode. The increasing oxygen contents and chlorate formation rates associated with falling caustic current efficiency are reported for both types of anode. If hydrochloric acid is used to destroy the chlorate, the amount of acid must be increased as the caustic current efficiency falls. The amounts of hydrochloric acid required for the two types of anode are calculated as examples for 96% and 93% caustic current efficiency.

Notes: Abstract Holes in cation exchange membranes of alkali chloride cells can have a number of different causes. They do not represent a source of great danger during operation of a membrane electrolyser as long as their number is limited or their combined diameter does not exceed a certain size. Of the different methods for detection of holes in membranes, two procedures are described in detail: the cell voltage test and the leak test with measurement of the gas flow through the holes. The cell voltage test is performed with low time consumption during start-up of an electrolyser. It mainly shows the large membrane holes in a cell. In contrast to this, with the leak test all holes in a membrane are detected. However, the procedure is time consuming and is possible only with a totally drained electrolyser. It is recommended to perform these tests immediately after installing new membranes and then from time to time in order to avoid damage to the cells or to the plant chlorine system.

Notes: Abstract The southeastern extension of the Austral Islands volcanic chain terminates near 29°S, 140°W at the active Macdonald Seamount. The ‘hotspot’ region near Macdonald consists of at least five other volcanic edifices each more than 500 m high, included in an area about 50–100 km in diameter. On the basis of the sea-floor topography, the southeastern limit of the hotspot area is located about 20 km east of the base of Macdonald, where it is defined by the 3950 m isobath. At the edge of the hotspot area, there is a marked deepening of the seafloor from c.3900 m down to 4000–4300 m. The deeper sea-floor is faulted and heavily sedimented. The Macdonald volcano itself stands 3760 m above the surrounding seafloor, and has a basal diameter of 45 km. Its summit in January 1987 was 39 m below sea level, and it seems likely that Macdonald will emerge at the surface in the near future. Recent (March and November 1986) phreatic explosions on Macdonald Seamount erupted fragments of ultramafic and mafic plutonic blocks together with basic lapilli (volcaniclastic sand). The plutonic blocks have been variably altered and metamorphosed, and in some cases show signs of mineralisation (disseminated sulphides). The blocks presumably come from deeper levels in the volcanic system. The volcanics so far dredged from Macdonald consist of olivine and clinopyroxene cumulus-enriched basalts, evolved basalts, and mugearite. On the basis of incompatible element variations, simple crystal fractionation seems to be controlling the chemical evolution of Macdonald magmas.

Notes: Abstract. Stationary spectra offer information on the interplay between the structures and the nature of electronic excitations reflecting bonding properties, as shown by comparing Sin with Agn (n=4-6) clusters. In order to study the dynamical properties, simulations and analysis of femtosecond (fs) time-resolved pump–probe or pump–dump signals have been carried out, which allows us to determine the timescales and the nature of configurational changes versus internal vibrational relaxation (IVR) in electronic ground or excited states. For this purpose we have developed a multi-state ab initio molecular dynamics (involving ground as well as adiabatic or non-adiabatic excited electronic states) on the timescale of the nuclear motion, using the time evolution of a thermal ensemble in the Wigner representation. The combination of ab initio quantum-chemical methods used for the molecular dynamics ‘on the fly’ and the Wigner-distribution approach for the description of the motion of the nuclei also allowed the accurate determination of pump–probe and pump–dump signals under temperature-dependent initial conditions. We use this novel combination of methods to investigate the dynamics in excited states of non-stoichiometric NanFn-1 clusters with a single excess electron. The timescales of the structural relaxation in excited states versus intramolecular vibrational relaxation processes have been determined, as illustrated for the example of Na4F3. This is the first study of the system with 15 degrees of freedom for which the dynamics in the excited states has been carried out without the precalculation of the energy surfaces.

Notes: Abstract. We investigate the degradation of ZnO/CdS/ Cu(In,Ga)Se2 heterojunction solar cells for space applications and the defect generation in polycrystalline Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin films by irradiation with 1-MeV electrons with fluences φe up to φe=5×1018 cm-2. Notable degradation of the solar cell performance starts at fluences of φe=1017 cm-2 where the open circuit voltage decreases by about 5% while short circuit current and fill factor remain essentially unaffected. Thus, Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells withstand electron fluences which are higher by one order of magnitude or more when compared to other technologies. A model describes the absolute open circuit voltage loss considering the increase of space charge recombination by electron irradiation-induced defects. Defect analysis by admittance spectroscopy shows that acceptor defects with an energy distance of approximately 300 meV from the valence band are generated at a rate γ=0.017 (±0.01) cm-1.

Notes: Abstract Objective To compare subcutaneous (PscO2) and transcutaneous (PtcO2) oxygen tension measurements in relation to hemodynamic variables at different levels of PEEP, and to evaluate the usefulness of these measurements as monitors of peripheral tissue perfusion. Design Prospective trial. Setting Intensive care unit in a university hospital. Patients Seven patients with gastric cancer who where undergoing total gastrectomy. Interventions Silicone catheter was placed in the upper arm and transcutaneous oxygen monitor was placed on the upper part of the chest. A pulmonary artery catheter was placed in the right pulmonary artery. Measurements and results PscO2 and PtcO2 together with hemodynamic variables were measured at different levels of PEEP. Progressive increase of PEEP reduced cardiac index (CI) (p〈0.05) with a concomitant decrease of PscO2 (p〈0.05) and oxygen delivery (DO2) (p〈0.05). Changes in PtcO2 parallelled changes in arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), but no correlation was found between PtcO2, CI and DO2. Conclusion PscO2 is a sensitive indicator of subcutaneous tissue perfusion, which can be used to identify the PEEP level, with optimum peripheral perfusion. PscO2 seems to be a more reliable indicafor of tissue perfusion than PtcO2.

Notes: Abstract We give an upper bound on the number of vertices ofP I , the integer hull of a polyhedronP, in terms of the dimensionn of the space, the numberm of inequalities required to describeP, and the size ϕ of these inequalities. For fixedn the bound isO(m n ϕ n− ). We also describe an algorithm which determines the number of integer points in a polyhedron to within a multiplicative factor of 1+ε in time polynomial inm, ϕ and 1/ε when the dimensionn is fixed.

Notes: Abstract Complexes of histone H1 from sea urchin sperm (H1S) and calf thymus (H1T) with superhelical DNA I and relaxed circular DNA II have been analyzed by analytical sedimentation. Similar to H1T, the highly basic and relatively arginine-rich histone H1S preferentially interacts with DNA I compared to DNA II under competition conditions. However, H1S induces a stronger aggregation of bothforms of DNA than H1T. Below 0.05 M NaCl, the soluble complexes formed by both histones have similar properties, but aggregation proceeds in a different manner: H1S induces a stronger aggregation of DNA II as compared to DNA I, whereas H1T fails to aggregate DNA I. The results are explained on the basis of differences in amino acid sequence and structure of the two histones and related to the special chromatin condensing ability of histone H1S.

Notes: Abstract Low-temperature scanning electron microscopy has been performed for imaging the spatial distribution of the critical current densityj c(x,y) and of the critical temperatureT c(x,y) in polycrystalline superconducting YBaCuO films. Strongly inhomogeneous behavior has been observed, and the spatial resolution limit has been found to be 1–2 μm. The local temperature increment in the specimen film caused by the electron beam scanning has been demonstrated experimentally as the underlying mechanism of the imaging principle, and the beam-induced thermal perturbation of the high-T c film/substrate configuration is discussed in detail. The radiation hardness of the sample films against the electron beam irradiation in our imaging experiments has been evaluated. No radiation damage could be detected up to the maximum applied dose of well above 1020 electrons/cm2 for a typical beam energy of 26 keV.
