    Notes: Abstract: A new band, populated by the spontaneous fission of 248Cm and studied by means of prompt γ-ray spectroscopy using the EUROGAM2 array, was observed in 99Zr. The 1038.8 keV band head with a half-life T 1/2 = 54(10) ns is interpreted as a K-isomer, corresponding to the 9/2[404] neutron-hole excitation. It is the first observation of this orbital in the mass A ∼ 100 region. The quadrupole moment, Q 0 = 3.9(3) eb deduced for the new band indicates a large deformation of β = 0.41, which is produced by a specific shape-coexistence mechanism, known in other regions and now found in the A ∼ 100 nuclei.

    Notes: Abstract. The large multi-detector arrays such as EUROBALL and GAMMASPHERE have made possible the study of the spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei through the observation of discrete, prompt $\gamma$ -rays emitted following fission. Most of the information obtained has concerned yrast states and collective excitations. In the present work, a search has been made for excited bands based upon two-quasiparticle intrinsic structures. Such bands have been found in several even-even nuclei from 96Sr to 112Pd. Careful analysis of triple-coincidence spectra has been performed in order to determine branching ratios within the bands. These branching ratios are then used to establish the magnetic properties of the intrinsic structure, permitting, in most cases, the determination of which Nilsson orbits (and whether they are neutron or proton states) are contributing to the excitation. Some example results from this search are presented.

    Notes: Abstract A differential detection scheme to reduce source noise and to improve sensitivity based upon the Faraday effect has been developed. This method is particularly useful in connection with low-power, high-noise laser sources and multipass arrangements where a degradation of polarization quality is substantial. The theoretical background of the differential method is developed. It is tested with magnetic rotation signals from transitions of stable species with low modulation sensitivity and signals from free radicals.

The response of the molecules to the modulation field has been studied in detail, resulting in calculation of effectiveg-values, which describe the modulation sensitivity of the transitions and the phase of the signals.

    Notes: Abstract We report the recent progress in the performance of the CO-overtone Δv=2 laser. We were able to increase both the number of lines and the output power by a significant amount. This laser is now a reliable source for spectroscopic applications in the spectral region from 2500–3800 cm−1. The typical parameters of the laser plasma and a table with the observed laser transitions and their frequencies are given.

    Notes: Abstract. Isoprene (C5H8) is one of the most important biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere. To calculate the impact of isoprene on atmospheric processes models have been developed that describe the isoprene release from plants. Measurements of this release require techniques for a fast, sensitive, on-line isoprene detection. Photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy is applied here for the first time to monitor biogenic isoprene emissions. A CO overtone PA spectrometer is used for the detection, probing the C-H stretching vibrations in the 3 to 4 μm range. This allows us to detect isoprene down to a few ppb with a time resolution of one minute in a continuous gas flow. The number of laser lines can be adjusted to meet the requirements of the respective experiment in terms of time resolution and selectivity against other possibly interfering VOCs. This results in a highly versatile instrument for the isoprene detection in biological experiments. Furthermore, the infrared fingerprint offers the potential to detect different isoprene isotopomers simultaneously, thus allowing us to carry out on-line labelling experiments. The new apparatus was used to study the light dependence of isoprene emission from Eucalyptus globulus. The results demonstrate, that the detector system is a promising tool for the study of plant gas emissions. It allows the validation of existing emission models which are important for atmospheric processes.

    Notes: Abstract We present a very high-resolution heterodyne spectrometer based on a CO laser which operates down to fundamental-band transitions of the molecule. This allows us to detect saturated absorption signals on these transitions at very low pressure (0.4 Pa) and laser intensity (〈 1 mW/cm2), yielding a linewidth of about 250 kHz. With the CO fundamental-band laser stabilized to these saturation signals we have measured the transition frequencies of the fundamental bands of three isotopic species to an accuracy of typically 20 kHz (Δv/v ≈ 3 × 10−10), referenced to the CO2 frequency standard. Together with additional frequency measurements of the first hot bands, these provide the first heterodyne frequency data of sub-Doppler accuracy for transitions in low lying bands of CO. They now represent the most accurate secondary frequency standard in the spectral region around 5 µm (60 THz).
