    Notes: Abstract For the investigation of terpene emissions from plants a thermodesorption-GC/cryocondensation-FT-IR system was used to complement GC/MS measurements. FT-IR spectra allow to obtain structural information on functional groups, especially if they contain oxygen. Measurements of the release of volatile organic compounds from pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) and lavender show the potential of GC/FT-IR to detect and quantify terpenes down to the pg-level. One major advantage of the system is the cryocondensation step on a ZnSe-slide, which allows to scan the substances repeatedly with higher scan number and/or resolution to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

    Notes: Abstract  After herbivore attack, plants launch a suite of direct and indirect defense responses that must be coordinated if plants are to realize a fitness benefit from these responses. Here we characterize the volatile emissions in the native tobacco plant, Nicotiana attenuata Torr. ex Wats., that are elicited by tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta L.) attack and are known to function as attractants for parasitoids. To provide the first ecophysiological comparison of examples of both types of defense in the same species, we characterize the elicitation and signaling mechanisms, the resources required, and the potential costs and benefits of the volatile release and compare these traits with those of the well-described induced direct defense in this species, nicotine production. The release of (E)-β-ocimene, cis-α-bergamotene and linalool is dramatically induced within 24 h by application of methyl jasmonate (MeJA), caterpillar feeding, and the treatment of mechanical wounds with larval oral secretions (OS), but not by mechanical damage alone. Plants from different geographic locations produce volatile blends that differ in composition. The most consistently released component from all genotypes, cis-α-berga-motene, is positively related to the amount of MeJA and the level of wounding if OS are applied to the wounds. The volatile release is strongly light dependent, dropping to undetectable quantities during dark periods, even when temperatures are elevated to match those of the light period. Inhibitors of wound-induced jasmonate accumulation (salicylates and auxins), which are known to inhibit wound-induced nicotine production, do not inhibit the release of volatiles. By individually inducing different leaf positions with OS and, on other plants, excising them after induction, we demonstrate that the emission is largely a systemic, whole-plant response, which is maximally triggered when the second fully expanded leaf is induced. We conclude that while both are whole-plant, systemic responses that utilize recently acquired resources for their production and are activated by the jasmonate cascade, the elicitation of the volatile release exhibits greater tissue sensitivity and utilizes additional signaling components than does nicotine production. In contrast to the large investment of fitness-limiting resources required for induced nicotine production or the resources used in benzyl acetone release from flowers for pollinator attraction, the resource requirements for the volatile release are minor. Hence the argument that the volatile release incurs comparatively large physiological costs cannot be supported in this system.

    Notes: Abstract. Isoprene (C5H8) is one of the most important biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere. To calculate the impact of isoprene on atmospheric processes models have been developed that describe the isoprene release from plants. Measurements of this release require techniques for a fast, sensitive, on-line isoprene detection. Photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy is applied here for the first time to monitor biogenic isoprene emissions. A CO overtone PA spectrometer is used for the detection, probing the C-H stretching vibrations in the 3 to 4 μm range. This allows us to detect isoprene down to a few ppb with a time resolution of one minute in a continuous gas flow. The number of laser lines can be adjusted to meet the requirements of the respective experiment in terms of time resolution and selectivity against other possibly interfering VOCs. This results in a highly versatile instrument for the isoprene detection in biological experiments. Furthermore, the infrared fingerprint offers the potential to detect different isoprene isotopomers simultaneously, thus allowing us to carry out on-line labelling experiments. The new apparatus was used to study the light dependence of isoprene emission from Eucalyptus globulus. The results demonstrate, that the detector system is a promising tool for the study of plant gas emissions. It allows the validation of existing emission models which are important for atmospheric processes.

    Notes: Abstract Phosphorus chemistry in streams was evaluated at the paired watershed study at the Bear Brook Watershed, Maine. The West Bear catchment has been treated bimonthly since 1989 with 1,800 eq (NH4)2SO4 ha-1 yr-1. East Bear was the untreated reference watershed. During 1993, concentration of total phosphorus (P) in weekly samples from East and West Bear Brook ranged from 0 to 15 μg L-1. The median values were 2 and 4 μg L-1 for East and West Bear, respectively. During a high discharge event in January of 1995, the concentration of dissolved P remained relatively constant (≤ 3 μg L-1) as pH decreased from 5.63 to 5.08 and from 5.14 to 4.75 in East and West Bear, respectively. The concentration of total P increased to ca. 60 μg L-1 during the rising limb of the hydrograph in West Bear, four times the value in East Bear, total P then declined rapidly as discharge remained high followed by an increase. Dissolved Al increased in both streams during the episodic acidification. West Bear, the more acidic, had concentrations of dissolved Al four times those of East Bear (maximum of 1.1 mg L-1 versus 0.25 mg L-1). Acid-soluble particulate Al increased to 0.2 and 4.2 mg L-1 for East and West Bear, respectively, in parallel to total P (but was 102 greater than total P) and then declined in parallel to total P while discharge remained high. Total P, dissolved P, and particulate Al did not relate to pH. Total P and particulate Al and Fe were strongly correlated. Concurrently, base cations remained relatively constant or decreased slightly. Particulate acid-soluble Al exceeded particulate acid-soluble base cations. We hypothesize that the particulate P was occluded in, or adsorbed on, acid-soluble particulate Al(OH)3. This Al(OH)3. This Al(OH)3 precipitates as emerging acidic groundwater degasses CO2 and pH rises. The export of Al and P is greater from the treated watershed because the induced acidification is translocating more Al from soils to the stream. Most of the export of P is related to acid-soluble Al particulate material.
