Notes: We report specific heat and μSR measurements on Th (x =0.019) and/or B (y=0.03) substituted UBe13. The specific heat data show that either Th or B substitution reduces the Kondo temperature TK and increases the entropy at the superconducting transition by almost 20%, indicating an enhanced density of states. However, whereas μSR shows clear evidence for magnetic correlations for Th substitutions (0.019〈x〈0.043), no magnetism is observed for B substitutions. The enhanced specific heat jump in the B-substituted material is associated with a change in the superconducting properties as TK is reduced.

Notes: Dia- and paramagnetic (Condon) domains in simple metals, produced at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields via the cooperative effect of electrons in Landau orbitals, are observable by the muon spin rotation (μSR) technique. For beryllium, domains were seen for T〈3.5 K in fields 1〈H〈3 T through a well resolved splitting of the muon precession frequency, the split lines reappearing in each de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) period as the applied field H varies. The beat in the dHvA oscillations allowed varying of the amplitude χ0 of the differential susceptibility, the key parameter determining domain properties. The data points in the (B,T) plane show that the standard formula for χ0(B,T) fails to describe the phase diagram, a consequence of the nearly cylindrical Fermi surface of Be. For white tin, preliminary data indicate the presence of domains by the oscillatory behavior of the μSR linewidth at T=0.1 K in fields of H(approximate)1 T, arising from electrons in the pocket of the Fermi surface in the sixth zone. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary. The effects of several factors on the uptake of salt during the brining of herring for kippering have been studied. the most important factors were the brine concentration, the brining time and the rate of stirring. the orientation of the fish (skin up or skin down on the brine surface), the oil content and the size of the fish were less important.

Notes: Summary Intraluminal flow velocities and tubular dimensions were estimated for superficial and deep proximal tubules of non-diuretic kidneys with a technique developed byHanssen. Kidneys of anesthetized rats were frozen in vivo 4–20 sec after an i.v. injection of 0.05 ml 10–20% Na ferrocyanide. Ferrocyanide was located as prussian blue in microdissected tubules after freeze-substitution and maceration of the kidneys. Its position was used to indicate the movement of glomerular filtrate along the tubule. Ferrocyanide clearance was slightly less than that of inulin at low plasma ferrocyanide levels. They were equal at higher plasma levels. The two clearances were sufficiently alike, however, to justify using ferrocyanide as an indicator of glomerular filtrate in these experiments. Transient small decreases in systemic blood pressure and increases in renal blood flow followed i.v. injections of 0.05 ml ferrocyanide and 0.05 ml 5% lissamine green. There was no evidence of continuing intraluminal flow when the kidney was rendered ischemic by ligating the renal pedicle. The mean distance between glomerulus and prussian blue front in kidneys frozen at different intervals after a ferrocyanide injection increased curvilinearly with time in a manner compatible with its indicating mean flow velocity. The distance between glomerulus and dye front in tubules from any one kidney was proportional to tubular length. Flow velocities were similar when measured with lissamine green in vivo or with ferrocyanide in microdissected tubules. Velocities decreased whenC inulin was reduced by partial compression of the renal artery. The reduction was greater in superficial than in deep tubules suggesting that flow velocities vary non-uniformly as gfr changes. Luminal diameters measured in microdissected tubules were similar to other estimates of in vivo tubular dimensions. There was no apparent difference between the length or luminal diameter of proximal tubules from the surface and deeper portions of the cortex in these rats.

Notes: Abstract The longitudinalμ +-spin relaxation rate has been measured on a high-purity spherical α-iron single crystal at temperaturesT down to 20 mK and in applied magnetic fieldsB appl parallel to 〈111〉 up to 3 T. Only above 1 K can the data be satisfactorily described by one rate constantГ. At 1 T≤B appl≤2 T and 50 mK≤T≤300 mK, oscillations (“wiggles”) were in addition superimposed on the longitudinal relaxation. A qualitative understanding of the measurements may be achieved in terms of the increasing influence of internal stresses onμ + diffusion as the temperature is lowered.

Notes: Abstract The spin-precession frequencies and the transverse spin relaxation rates of positive mouns (μ +) have been measured on two elastically strained α-Fe single crystal platelets as well as on an unstrained reference α-Fe crystal at temperatures down to 2.7 K in applied magnetic field 0≤B appl≤3 T. The drastic effects of the strains may be qualitatively understood in terms of their influence on both the magnetic domain structure and theμ + energies at the various interstitial sites. This leads to the conclusion that at low temperaturesμ + in α-Fe occupy configurations related to octahedral interstitials with dipolar fieldB dip=0.70 T.

Notes: Abstract: The temperature-concentration phase diagram of the Si-doped spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 is investigated by means of neutron scattering and muon spin rotation spectroscopy in order to determine the microscopic distribution of the magnetic and lattice dimerised regions as a function of doping. The analysis of the zero-field muon spectra has confirmed the spatial inhomogeneity of the staggered magnetisation that characterises the antiferromagnetic superlattice peaks observed with neutrons. In addition, the variation of the macroscopic order parameter with doping can be understood by considering the evolution of the local magnetic moment as well as of the various regions contributing to the muon signal.

Notes: Abstract In a longitudinalμ +SR experiment on a high-purityα-Fe single crystal sphere magnetically saturated in a 〈 111 〉 direction damped oscillations (wiggles) were observed in a temperature range 30 mK to 600 mK and in a certain regime of applied magnetic fieldsB appl. Meassurements of the wiggle frequency as a function ofB appl give us directly the Fermi fieldB Fermi=(−1.13±0.02)T and the dipolar magnetic field ¦B dip ∥ ¦=(0.66±0.03)T.B dip ∥ was used to determine the prefactor in the Arrhenius law obeyed by theμ + hopping rate between 100 K and 1000 K. A comparision with the corresponding values for protons and deuterons suggests diffusion via the adiabatic mechanism.
