Notes: Purpose This study evaluated the influence on dimensional accuracy of dental casts made with different types of trays and impression materials and poured at different and multiple times.Materials and Methods Two types of stock trays (plastic stock tray, perforated metal stock tray) and 4 types of custom tray materials (autopolymerizing acrylic resin, thermoplastic resin, and 2 types of light-polymerized acrylic resins) were used with 2 types of impression materials (addition polymerizing silicone and polyether), to make impressions of a metal master model. Each tray and impression material was used to make 5 impressions. Casts were made by multiple pourings at 30 minutes, 6 hours, 24 hours, and 30 days after impression making. Using a measuring microscope, 12 distances were calculated based on measurements of 8 reference points. The absolute value of the difference of each measurement was calculated, as was the corresponding measurement on the master model. A Bayesian model using a simple noninformative prior was used to analyze these data. Results Statistical differences within 6 μm were found only with thermoplastic resin tray material for addition silicone, and for thermoplastic resin tray material and 1 type of light-polymerized acrylic resin for polyether. Neither stock trays nor custom trays contributed to the differences in accuracy of the casts. All deviations in casts made with silicone impression material were within a clinically acceptable range. For the polyether, distortions occurred that were clinically unacceptable. Impressions made from polyether distorted over time. Silicone impression material has dimensional stability up to 30 days. Conclusion Accurate casts can be made with either stock trays or custom trays. An impression made from polyether should be poured only once and within 24 hours after impression making, because of the distortion of the material over time. Silicone impression material has better dimensional stability than polyether.

Notes: The linear stability of sideband modes for a one-dimensional free electron laser is investigated in detail. The dependence on wiggler taper, slippage between optical pulse and electrons, and trapped electron distribution functions are included in the analysis. Nyquist plots are used to delineate the parameter space in which sideband instabilities occur and approximate analytic expressions for the linear growth rate are derived. In special cases a complete analytic solution is given. Essentially all equilibria are unstable to sideband growth. The linear growth rates agree well with numerical simulations.

Notes: The parasite fauna of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson from 10 sites across northern Australia and one site in Indonesia, was examined to evaluate the degree of movement and subsequent stock structure of the fish. Kupang fish (Indonesia) had very few Terranova spp., Grillotia branchi, Otobothrium cysticum or Pterobothrium sp. compared to Australian fish, indicating that no Australian fish enter the Kupang fishery. Univariate and discriminant function analysis of four ‘temporary’ parasite species, the copepod Pseudocycnoides armatus and the monogeneans Gotocotyla bivaginalis, Pricea multae and Pseudothoracocotyla ovalis, demonstrated little similarity between areas of northern Australia, indicating minimal short-term exchange between neighbouring groups of S. commerson. Analyses of five ‘permanent’ parasite species, the larval helminths G. branchi, O. cysticum, Pterobothrium sp., Callitetrarhynchus gracilis and Paranybelinia balli, also revealed large differences between areas thus indicating long-term separation. There are at least six parasitological stocks across northern Australia: Fog Bay/Bathurst Island, Cape Wessel, Groote/Sir Edward Pellew, Mornington Island, Weipa, and the Torres Strait. The occurrence of a few irregular fish in the samples suggested that up to 5% of fish moved between stocks during their lifetime. The similarity of within-school variability to that between schools showed that the fish do not form long-term school associations.

Notes: [Auszug] Knowledge of carbon exchange between the atmosphere, land and the oceans is important, given that the terrestrial and marine environments are currently absorbing about half of the carbon dioxide that is emitted by fossil-fuel combustion. This carbon uptake is therefore limiting the extent of ...

Notes: Summary An extracellular polysaccharide composed of glucose, fucose, arabinose and glucuronic acid in a molar proportion of 11:6:3:1 is a major end-product of photosynthesis by Palmella mucosa Kütz. The liberation of polysaccharide is related to the age of the culture. Glucose can substitute efficiently for CO2 as the source of carbon for polysaccharide synthesis. Nitrate-nitrogen from sodium, potassium and calcium salts can be used in the mineral salts medium with little differences in carbon metabolism of the alga. Ammonium nitrate produces an acidic medium which limits polysaccharide production. The incorporation of C14 into the polysaccharide from NaHC14O3 shows initially a trend toward intracellular synthesis. The C14 appears in the extracellular polysaccharide after prolonged exposure. Glucose-C14 is actively transformed to polysaccharide material which is an indication that glucose may play an important role in the synthesis of polysaccharide by Palmella mucosa Kütz.
