Notes: The electrical transport properties of CoSi2 and Co(SixGe1−x)2 thin films formed by solid state interaction and co-evaporation in the range of 4–300 K were studied. The Hall effect data indicate a hole carrier conduction in all samples. The rapid thermal annealed CoSi2 exhibits a typical metallic conduction with a residual resistivity of 3.3-μΩ-cm and room-temperature (RT) resistivity of 15 μΩ cm. The co-evaporated CoSi2 and Co(Si0.9Ge0.1)2 films after low temperature annealing up to 250 °C show a low resistivity of 70–80 μΩ cm at RT and change little down to 4 K. The hole carrier density of all the samples studied has values close to 2–3×1022 cm−3, while the carrier Hall mobility has large differences.

Notes: Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) is a pigmentary genodermatosis of autosomal dominant inheritance characterized by a mixture of hyperpigmented and hypopigmented macules distributed on the dorsal aspects of the hands and feet. It is caused by mutations of the RNA-specific adenosine deaminase gene. We report the identification of a Chinese family with a three-generation pedigree of DSH, in whom a novel tyrosine substitution mutation in DSRAD was demonstrated: a heterozygous nucleotide A→G transition at position 2879 in exon 10 of the DSRAD gene was detected.

Notes: Marie Unna hereditary hypotrichosis (MUHH) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with progressive hair loss starting in early childhood and aggravating at puberty. Several studies have mapped the MUHH gene to chromosome 8p21. Here we report a Chinese MUHH family with variable phenotypes. All affected individuals have anomalies affecting both hair density and hair shafts. Major clinical characteristics, disease history and histological examination support the diagnosis of MUHH, but the features of scarring in this kindred are modest and none of the patients have vertex hair loss, which is in contrast with typical MUHH. We now report genotyping and linkage analysis using 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers spanning the MUHH locus at 8p. Two-point linkage analysis using these markers revealed significant exclusion of this locus (log of the odds scores 〈 − 2) at θ = 0 indicating that there is a range of clinical presentations in MUHH, and that more than one genetic locus is responsible for the disorder.

Notes: The complex dielectric response of strontium barium niobate relaxor ferroelectrics has been studied as a function of orientation and composition. The dielectric response was found to be strongly dependent on orientation, in distinct comparison to the nearly orientation-independent response found for Pb-based perovskite relaxors. Investigations of the temperature dependence of the high-field polarization behavior found that the square-to-slim loop hysteresis transition occurred rapidly with increasing temperature. In addition, no deviations from Curie–Weiss behavior were found, however two distinct linear regions were observed. An anisotropic dielectric glasslike model involving the freezing of heterophase fluctuations is then discussed in reference to the data.

Notes: YBa2Cu3O7−x superconducting thin films with a critical current density of 2.3×106 A/cm2 at 77.7 K and 0 T were prepared by a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process. The films were formed in situ on LaAlO3 at a substrate temperature of 730 °C in 2 Torr partial pressure of N2O. Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements of the as-deposited films show a sharp superconducting transition temperature of 89 K with a narrow width of less than 1 K. Critical current densities were measured by the dc transport method with a patterned bridge of 120 μm×40 μm. Both x-ray diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy measurements indicate that films grew epitaxially with the c axis perpendicular to the surface of the substrate.

Notes: This article presents computation of optical gain and threshold current density in InGaN–AlGaN quantum wire and dot lasers in the presence of dislocations and surface states. The exciton binding energy including the effect of strain induced piezoelectric field is calculated to be 10–80 meV in InGaN–AlGaN quantum wires and dots, depending on the lateral and transverse dimensions. In contrast to the conventional GaAs or InP based quantum wires, these high binding energy results in large exciton densities, making optical transitions due to excitons dominant over free electrons and holes. Optical gain and threshold current density in InGaN–AlGaN based multiple quantum wire and dot lasers are computed including the effect of dislocation-induced traps. The calculated threshold current density Jth for defect free compressive-strained InGaN quantum wire (50 Å×50 Å) and dot (50 Å × 50 Å × 50 Å) lasers, realized on sapphire or SiC substrates, are shown to yield ultralow threshold current density of 233 and 88 A/cm2, respectively. In the presence of dislocations (1×1010 cm−2), the threshold current densities only increase to 924 and 623 A/cm2 for the same wire and dot, when we include the contribution of excitonic transitions. However, the corresponding values increase significantly to 30 838 and 11 647 A/cm2 if the exciton enhancement is not included. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Doppler broadened gamma spectra from positron annihilations in alumina and several zeolites were measured as a function of internal surfaces. In all cases, the gamma line shape parameter was found to vary proportionally with surface area. The results greatly enhance the potential of using positron annihilation spectroscopy as a microprobe for surface studies of porous materials.

Notes: A full color display with its spectra covering the entire visible color range using a single polymer is presented here. Different concentrations of poly(2,6-[4-phenylquinoline]) and poly(2,6-[p-phenylene]-4-phenylquinoline) were incorporated into silica gels via the sol–gel technique. At high concentrations, the conjugated polymers form multiple excimers in the channels within the silica network, leading to the emission of red light (∼600 nm). At low concentrations, the polymer chains are isolated and are being trapped individually in the silica domain, which results in the emission of blue light (∼400 nm). For concentrations in-between, moderate extensive chain interaction leads to the emission of green, yellow, and orange colors. Therefore, the color tunability can be achieved by simply varying the concentration of quinoline polymers in the silica glasses. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Spectroscopic rotating-analyzer ellipsometry employing a compensator was used to measure the ellipsometric angles and depolarization from 0.73 to 5.4 eV of commercial separation by implantation of oxygen wafers. The data were analyzed to find the thicknesses of the native oxide cap, the top Si layer, and the buried oxide (BOX). From the depolarization in the spectral region of interference fringes, we determine layer thickness nonuniformities. Although a reasonable agreement between the data can be found by describing the BOX with the optical constants of thermal oxide, it can be improved by modeling the BOX as an effective medium consisting of thermal oxide and amorphous Si. The physical justification for this model is the presence of Si islands near the BOX/substrate interface. We compare our ellipsometry results with a destructive analysis using electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Lymph nodes, spleen and thymus obtained from Lewis rats were examined over the course of experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG) for the distribution and the number of antigen-reactive CD4+ T helper cells which, upon recognition of Torpedo acetylcholine receptor (AChR) or the α, β, γ or δ subunits of Torpedo AChR, responded by secretion of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). T cells with these specificities were detected in these three immune organs. Numbers were highest in lymph nodes. In spleen and thymus, numbers of antigen-reactive T cells did not differ. T cells reacting against the intact AChR were more frequent than T cells recognizing any of the subunits. The immunogenicity between the four subunits did not differ, with the exception that the α subunit induced a slightly higher T-cell response. No restriction of the T-cell repertoire to the four subunits was detected during early compared to late phases of EAMG. The AChR and subunit-reactive T cells could—via secretion of effector molecules including IFN-γ—play an important role in the initiation and perpetuation of EAMG. and consequently also of human myasthenia gravis. T cells with the same specificities were also detected in control animals injected with adjuvant only, but at much lower numbers which were within the range of T cells recognizing the control antigen myelin basic protein. They could represent naturally occurring autoimmune T cells.
