Notes: Several experiments were performed to elucidate the origin of the second-order optical nonlinearity χ(2) induced in the corona-poled Corning 7059 glass films. The values and the time decay of the second-harmonic coefficient d33 were measured for the glass films poled on several different kinds of substrates. The value of d33 was found to be dependent on the kinds of substrates. It was also observed that the glass films poled on a soda-lime substrate showed faster time decay of d33 than those poled on a Pyrex glass substrate. The glass films were also poled at room temperature, and the values of d33 were measured as a function of poling time. As a result, the value of d33 increased with the poling time and approached a value which was close to that obtained for the glass films poled at 100 °C. From the experimental results, it is speculated that the space charge formed in the vicinity of the interface between the glass film and the substrate contributes to the creation of the χ(2). The planar charge density at the glass-film–substrate interface is derived, and the experimental results are discussed.

Notes: Second-order optical nonlinearity χ(2) is induced in glass films by corona poling. The glass films are fabricated by radio-frequency sputtering Corning7059 onto Pyrex glass substrates. The values of second-order nonlinear coefficient d33 of the corona-poled glass films are estimated to be ∼0.5 pm/V. Using the corona-poled glass films as a waveguide, phase-matched second-harmonic generation has been demonstrated in the glass films for the first time. The origin of the χ(2) is considered to be related to the defects in the glass films.

Notes: Abstract Venous drainage to the portal vein in pulmonary sequestration is rare. A 7-month-old girl was referred to our hospital following surgery for ventricular septal defect because of a left upper abdominal mass with a large feeding artery from the abdominal aorta and venous drainage to the portal vein. She had had frequent pulmonary infections and was growth retarded. MRI demonstrated that the mass was above the left diaphragm, suggesting extralobar sequestration. An extralobar sequestered lung was resected at thoracotomy. Diagnostic problems and clinical features are presented.

Notes: Abstract Spontaneous perforation of the bile duct (SPBD) is a rare disease in children. Pancreatico-biliary maljunction (PBM) has been postulated to contribute to its etiology. We have treated three children with SPBD over 30 years, two of whom had PBM. There was one boy and two girls aged 10 months to 2 years with symptoms of abdominal distension, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, and acholic stools. The diagnosis of SPBD was made by paracentesis showing biliary ascites, and primary biliary and intra-abdominal drainage was performed in all cases. The site of perforation was at the connection of the common bile duct (CBD) with the cystic duct in all cases. In two cases reflux of contrast into the pancreatic duct was noted, the common channel was long (17 and 12 mm, respectively), and the bile amylase level in the CBD was abnormally high (50,000 and 67,000 IU/l, respectively). In the third patient there was no reflux of contrast into the pancreatic duct and the bile amylase and trypsin levels in the CBD and gallbladder were not measurable. Thus, SPBD in children may not be due solely to PBM, but may involve multiple mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract To assess the ability of gadolinium enhancement to suppress the overlapping vessel signals that diminish the image quality of magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), we obtained MRCP before and after intravenous injection of gadolinium. Signal intensity ratio of the common bile duct to the main pancreatic duct was significantly improved after the injection of contrast media. The image quality of the postcontrast MRCP was better than that of the precontrast one.

Notes: Abstract We extend a notion of a lexicographic domination between strategies, introduced for normal form games in Okada (1988), to extensive games via the transformation from the extensive form to the agent normal form. It is shown that lexicographically undominatedness implies subgame perfection of an equilibrium point in extensive games with perfect recall.

Notes: Abstract Brittle fractures occurring under biaxial stress states were analysed based on the weakest link model using the mixed mode fracture criterion. Expressions for the mixed mode fracture criterion were chosen for application to the negativeK l region, corresponding to the compressive stress for the crack. Calculations for biaxial strength with randomly oriented constant-length cracks from the mixed mode fracture criterion were made in the region ofK I〉0 because an unstable fracture seems to occur in this region. The results indicated that the tensile stress component in the combined tension and compression stress state remains constant when the compressive component is smaller than the critical value, which is given by [1 −(K ∥c/K ∣c)2]σt derived from the mixed mode fracture criterion, (K ∣/K ∣c) + (K ∥/K ∥c)2 = 1. Considering the statistical effects, however, calculation of the biaxial strength is modified to result in: (1) lowering the biaxial tensile strength, and in (2) a smooth transition from the constant tensile strength region to the decreasing strength region under the combined tension and compression stress. This suggests that the highK IIc/KIc ratio results in the increase in the compressive strength relative to the tensile strength.
