    Notes: Abstract The n-locus two-allele symmetric viability model is considered in terms of the parameters measuring the additive epistasis in fitness. The dynamics is analysed using a simple linear transformation of the gametic frequencies, and then the recurrence equations depend on the epistatic parameters and Geiringer's recombination distribution only. The model exhibits an equilibrium, the central equilibrium, where the 2 n gametes are equally frequent. The transformation simplifies the stability analysis of the central point, and provides the stability conditions in terms of the existence conditions of other equilibria. For total negative epistasis (all epistatic parameters are negative) the central point is stable for all recombination distributions. For free recombination either a central point (segregating one, two, ... or n loci) or the n-locus fixation states are stable. For no recombination and some epistatic parameters positive the central point is unstable and several boundary equilibria may be locally stable. The sign structure of the additive epistasis is therefore an important determinant of the dynamics of the n-locus symmetric viability model. The non-symmetric multiple locus models previously analysed are dynamically related, and they all have an epistatic sign structure that resembles that of the multiplicative viability model. A non-symmetric model with total negative epistasis which share dynamical properties with the similar symmetric model is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract. Natural killer (NK) immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) are a family of polymorphic receptors which interact with specific motifs on HLA class I molecules and modulate NK cytolytic activity. In this study, we analyzed a recently sequenced subgenomic region on chromosome 19q13.4 containing eight members of the KIR receptor repertoire. Six members are clustered within a 100-kb continuous sequence. These genes include a previously unpublished member of the KIR gene family 2DS6, as well as 2DL1, 2DL4, 3DL1, 2DS4, 3DL2, from centromere to telomere. Two additional KIR genes, KIRCI and 2DL3, which may be located centromeric of this cluster were also analyzed. We show that the KIR genes have undergone repeated gene duplications. Diversification between the genes has occurred postduplication primarily as a result of retroelement indels and gene truncation. Using pre- and postduplication Alu sequences identified within these genes as evolutionary molecular clocks, the evolution and duplication of this gene cluster is estimated to have occurred 30–45 million years ago, during primate evolution. A proposed model of the duplication history of the KIR gene family leading to their present organization is presented.

    Notes: Summary We have examined the influence of genetic and other factors on the serum concentration of the fourth component of complement (C4) in four patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) studied over 3 to 8 years. Complement allotyping was performed to determine the number of C4 null genes in each patient. Two patients with C4 null genes had relatively low serum C4 concentrations with normal serum anti-DNA binding and no evidence of active disease. By contrast two patients without null alleles appeared to be consuming C4 when the serum C4 concentrations were within the conventional reference range. We therefore propose the use of appropriate reference ranges adjusted for the number of null alleles. Such adjusted reference ranges may improve the utility of serum C4 concentration in monitoring disease activity.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Harzburgite and dunite from the Oman ophiolite display a strong olivine fabric and microstructures typical for high temperature mantle deformation. The syntectonic, magmatically formed, chromitites occurring throughout the mantle sequence vary from almost undeformed (resembling chromitite from stratiform complexes) to highly deformed. Usually the interstitial silicates in the deformed ore possess a fabric similar to those of the host rocks, whereas a weak or poikilitic fabric is observed on relatively undeformed deposits. Chromite grains are elongated and flattened, defining strong foliations and lineations, in disseminated ore, and pull-apart-like structures perpendicular to the lineation form in the coarser massive ore. No preferred crystallographic orientation of chromite has been detected with the X-ray-texture goniometer, and it is proposed that chromite mainly deforms by passive rotation in the weaker silicate matrix, cataclasis and diffusion creep.
    Abstract: Résumé Les dunites et harzburgites du complexe ophiolitique d'Oman présentent une forte fabrique de l'olivine et des microstructures typiques de déformations mantelliques de haute température. Les chromitites, d'origine magmatique syntectomque, qui se trouvent le long de la séquence mantellique varient entre des termes presque non déformés (ressemblant aux chromitites des complexes stratiformes) jusqu'à des termes très déformés. Les silicates interstitiels du minerai déformé présentent fréquemment une fabrique semblable à celle des minéraux de la roche hôte alors que l'on observe une fabrique peu développée ou bien une texture poecilitique dans les minerais des gisements relativement peu déformés. Les cristaux de chromite sont allongés et aplatis, définissant une foliation et une linéation très marquées dans les minerais disséminés; des structures d'étirement (pull-apart) perpendiculaires à la linéation apparaissent dans les minerais plus massifs. Aucune orientation cristallographique préferentielle n'a pu être mise en évidence au goniomètre de texture; on propose donc que la chromite se déforme principalement par rotation passive dans une matrice silicatée plus fragile, par cataclase et par fluage-diffusion.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Dunite und Harzburgite, die im Ophiolit des Oman auftreten, zeigen ein Olivingefüge und Mikrostrukturen, die typisch sind für Manteldeformationen bei hohen Temperaturen. Die syntektonischen, magmatisch gebildeten Chromitite sind über die gesamte Abfolge der Mantelgesteine zu finden. Das Ausmaß der Deformation der Chromitite reicht von gering bis stark. Fast undeformierte Chromitite gleichen denen stratiformer Komplexe. Im deformierten Erz zeigen die in Zwickeln auftretenden Silikatminerale im allgemeinen ein ähnliches Gefüge wie das Wirtsgestein; in relativ undeformierten Vorkommen zeigen sie ein schwaches oder poikilitisches Gefüge. Die Chromitkörner haben einen plattigen Habitus und bilden im Sprenkelerz ein deutliches Flächen- und Lineargefüge. Im grobkörnigen Derberz entstehen hingegen Dehnungsstrukturen (pull-apart textures) senkrecht zur Lineation. Röntgentexturgoniometrische Untersuchungen ergaben keine Regelung des Chromits, und es wird daher angenommen, daß der Chromit aufgrund passiver Rotation in der schwächeren Silikatmatrix deformiert wurde, weiterhin kommen auch Kataklase und Diffusionsmechanismen in Frage.
