Notes: Individuals suffering from classical migraine report an astonishing diversity of migraine auras. A frequently reported symptom is a visual hallucination known as fortification illusion (FI). Here we demonstrate that the typical zig-zag pattern of the FI can be reproduced using experimental data of orientation maps of the primary visual cortex (V1) assuming that a continuous excitation front propagates across V1. We put forward a model in which the cortical neurons within this excitation wave are activated sufficiently to contribute to conscious perception. It is shown that the discontinuous repetitive nature of the zig-zag pattern of the FI can reflect the specific layout of visual cortical orientation maps. Additionally, dynamic features of the FI are predicted based on our model.

Notes: DivIVA from Bacillus subtilis is a bifunctional protein with distinct roles in cell division and sporulation. During vegetative growth, DivIVA regulates the activity of the MinCD complex, thus helping to direct cell division to the correct mid-cell position. DivIVA fulfils a quite different role during sporulation in B. subtilis when it directs the oriC region of the chromosome to the cell pole before asymmetric cell division. DivIVA is a 19.5 kDa protein with a large part of its structure predicted to form a tropomyosin-like α-helical coiled-coil. Here, we present a model for the quaternary structure of DivIVA, based on cryonegative stain transmission electron microscopy images. The purified protein appears as an elongated particle with lateral expansions at both ends producing a form that resembles a ‘doggy-bone’. The particle mass estimated from these images agrees with the value of 145 kDa measured by analytical ultracentrifugation suggesting 6- to 8-mers. These DivIVA oligomers serve as building blocks in the formation of higher order assemblies giving rise to strings, wires and, finally, two-dimensional lattices in a time-dependent manner.

Notes: To study the organization of the plasminogen activator/plasminogen-plasmin (PA/PG-P) system in human epidermis we raised monoclonal antibodies with specificity for human plasminogen and plasmin (PG-P), Monoclonal antibody P2, which appeared most suitable for immunohistology, is a mouse monoclonal antibody of IgG1 subtype, specific for the precursor enzyme plasminogen and for the high molecular weight chain of the active enzyme, plasmin. Immunofluorescence analysis of normal human epidermis revealed that reactivity with P2 was confined to the basal cell layer. In psoriatic lesions, however, this regional organization was not found. Immunoreactivity in this case was scattered throughout all the hyperproliferating cell layers, which is taken as evidence for an altered distribution of PG-P in psoriatic lesions. In psoriasis other components of the PA/PG-P system have previously been found to be altered. In this context our findings add to the hypothesis that this system may be involved in the pathology or the pathogenesis of psoriatic lesions.

Notes: Abstract Al/Cl2 cells were built using a coaxial cylindrical cell arrangement with cylindrical porous graphite chlorine electrodes and 99.5% Al anodes (cylindrical rods). The electrolyte used was a slightly acidic aqueous NaCl solution containing small amounts of In3+ and Hg2+ as additives. The cells have an open-circuit voltage of 2.6 V and a maximum power density of 55mW cm−2 at a cell voltage of 1.6V with a Faradaic efficiency of 65–70%. A battery consisting of seven cells connected in parallel delivered a maximum power of about 15W.

Notes: Abstract A new version of the Al/Cl2 battery previously described was investigated. Instead of a graphite cylinder, a porous titanium plate was used as a chlorine electrode (cathode). The electrolyte used was a moderately acidic aqueous NaCl solution of pH 2 containing small amounts of In3+ and Hg2+ as additives. The cell had an open-circuit voltage of 2.6 V and delivered a maximum power of 19.8 W at 1.1 V with a Faradiac efficiency of 69%. The power density was 280 mW cm−2. A module consiting of 4 submodules connected in series, where each submodule contained 4 double-unit cells connected in parallel, had an open-circuit voltage of 10.6 V, a maximum power of 200 W and an energy density of 110 Whl−1.

Notes: Abstract. One- and two-component bistable reaction-diffusion systems under external force are considered. The simplest case of a periodic forcing of cosine type is chosen. Exact analytical solutions for the traveling fronts are obtained for a piecewise linear approximation of the non-linear reaction term. Velocity equations are derived from the matching conditions. It is found that in the presence of forcing there exists a set of front solutions with different phases (matching point coordinates $\xi_0$ ) leading to velocity dependencies on the wavenumber that are either monotonic or oscillating. The general characteristic feature is that the nonmoving front becomes movable under forcing. However, for a specific choice of wavenumber and phase, there is a nonmoving front at any value of the forcing amplitude. When the forcing amplitude is large enough, the velocity bifurcates to form two counterpropagating fronts. The phase portraits of specific types of solutions are shown and briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract. Micro-Raman facet temperatures of high-power diode lasers with different waveguide architectures are compared. For regular operation conditions, the thermal behavior of ‘unaged’ arrays emitting in the 808-nm wavelength region with different architectures is similar, however, with an increased load thermal behaviors differ significantly and exhibit failure events at facet temperatures typically between 150 and 450 °C. From various experiments, among them facet temperature measurements for ultrahigh-power operation as well as by preparative failure analytics, we provide evidence that in arrays the front facets are significantly affected by device operation and influence the failure behavior of the whole high-power diode laser also in cases when the device failure is accompanied by dislocation creation inside the device.
