Notes: Control of some soilborne pathogens may be achieved by use of decoy or catch crops. These stimulate the germination of resting spores, resulting in limited expression of disease symptoms. Results achieved using this approach are reported here using leafy daikon (radish, Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) for control of Plasmodiophora brassicae, the cause of clubroot disease of Brassicaceae. Disease indices of Chinese cabbage plants grown in pots that had previously contained leafy daikon were lower compared with pots where no plants had been grown before (control pots). Numbers of resting spores of P. brassicae in soil in pots after cultivation with leafy daikon were reduced by 71% compared with control pots when resting spores were recovered and counted directly. In a field experiment, numbers of resting spores were reduced by 94% compared with the start of the experiment when leafy daikon was grown in advance of Chinese cabbage, but there was no reduction in disease severity in the Chinese cabbage. Plasmodiophora brassicae infected the root hairs of leafy daikon and those of Chinese cabbage, but no clubs were found on leafy daikon roots. The results from pot trials indicate that leafy daikon may be useful as a decoy crop for the control of clubroot disease in field crops.

Notes: Abstract. We show that every unframed knot type in $ST^*{\bf \mathrm{R}}^2$ has a representative obtained by the Legendrian lifting of an immersed plane curve. This gives a positive answer to the question asked by V.I.Arnold in [3]. The Legendrian lifting lowers the framed version of the HOMFLY polynomial [20] to generic plane curves. We prove that the induced polynomial invariant can be completely defined in terms of plane curves only. Moreover it is a genuine, not Laurent, polynomial in the framing variable. This provides an estimate on the Bennequin-Tabachnikov number of a Legendrian knot.

Notes: Abstract  Genes for dimeric and tetrameric human metallothionein (hMT) were designed and successfully overexpressed in Escherichia coli to generate functional oligomeric hMTs. An hMT synthesized with prokaryotic codons, a linker encoding a gly-gly-gly tripeptide, and Met-deficient hMT-II was ligated to create a dimeric hMT, from which a tetrameric hMT was then constructed. The increased molecular size of the constructs resulted in improved stability and productivity in E. coli. The oligomeric proteins formed inclusion bodies which were dissolved with dithiothreitol, and the purified apo-metallothioneins were reconstituted with Cd or Zn ions in a reducing condition. The oligomeric hMT proteins incubated with Cd ions showed a typical Cd-thiolate absorbance peak at 245–255 nm. The dimeric and tetrameric hMT proteins exhibited both Cd and Zn binding activities that were respectively two and four times higher than those of the hMT-II monomer protein. These novel oligomeric hMTs may be useful in bioremediation for heavy metals.

Notes: Summary 125I-insulin was covalently crosslinked to its receptor on human placental membrane fractions with disuccinimidyl suberate. The 125I-insulin crosslinked receptor was solubilized with Triton X-100 and used as a probe to determine autoantibodies to the insulin receptor in sera from patients with insulin resistance (type B syndrome). When the solubilized 125I-insulin: receptor complex was incubated with these sera and then with anti-human IgG serum, the complex was precipitated as a function of the amount of anti-receptor serum. Unlabelled insulin at concentrations ⩽10 μg/ml did not affect immunoprecipitation of the complex, suggesting that a subpopulation of anti-receptor antibodies recognizes determinants outside the insulin binding region of the receptor molecule. 125I-insulin: receptor complex was precipitated also by the addition of anti-insulin antibodies. The effect of anti-insulin antibody was eliminated by the addition of excess unlabelled insulin. The immunoprecipitation assay using 125I-insulin crosslinked receptor was sensitive and convenient for detecting anti-receptor antibodies.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Four biologically essential catecholamines mentioned in above title are able to inhibit sarcoma growth; the inhibition is greatly enhanced by cupric ions. In combination with copper, these o-diphenol compounds depolymerize nucleic acids and break the DNA-molecule specically at the site of pyrimidine nucleotide cluster. The results were briefly discussed in relation to metabolic tumour regression or cancerization and further to Yamafuji effect causing cellular differentiation and anomalization.

Notes: A finite element method with transmitting boundary is developed for time-harmonic elastodynamics on infinite domains. Only a finite inner domain needs to be discretized into conventional finite elements, while the effect of the exterior domain is simulated by introducing the transmitting boundary stiffness matrix on the degrees-of-freedom of the transmitting boundary nodes. In order to incorporate the Sommerfeld radiation condition, the reciprocity relation, on the transmitting boundary for the radiating elastodynamic state under consideration and the one which is induced by a finite number of point source is used to calculate the transmitting boundary stiffness matrix. The effectiveness of the transmitting boundary technique has been demonstrated by solving the stress concentration problems of a homogeneous isotropic full space with a circular cylindrical cavity and of the one with a spherical cavity, which are subjected to plane incident waves, and the results are compared with the ones of the conventional FEM and the exact data.

Notes: It has been shown that a standard screw-extruder with a little modification is very useful for the measurement of flow properities of various plastics melt over a wide range. Results obtained are very interesting and it is expected that they have applicability to polymer processing. A range of flow rates covering both extrusion and injection molding applications were considered.
