Notes: Abstract A 59-year old Japanese woman diagnosed as having systemic sclerosis with limited cutaneous involvement was hospitalized with scleroderma renal crisis. Malignant hypertension with marked hyperreninemia and grade three hypertensive retinopathy were present, and the renal biopsy showed marked intimal thickening of the small intrarenal arteries. The patient's serum was negative for anticentromere and anti-DNA topoisomerase I (Scl-70) antibodies, whereas a radioimmunoprecipitation study revealed the presence of antibody to RNA polymerases I, II, and III. The patient was successfully treated with captopril, with normalization of blood pressure and reversal of the decreased renal function. The presence of antibody to RNA polymerases may be a marker for the development of life-threatening scleroderma renal crisis even in patients with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis.

Notes: Abstract For complex heat capacity measurements, steady state of various types of temperature modulated DSC is theoretically investigated by a set of common comprehensive fundamental equations of heat balance. Heat capacities of heat paths, heat loss to the environment and mutual heat exchange between the sample and the reference material are taken into accounts together with thermal contact effect between the cell and its holder plate. Rigorous and general solutions have been obtained, and useful relations for complex heat capacity measurements have been derived for each type of DSC. They are compared with each other to elucidate unique features of each type of DSC.

Notes: Abstract Curves obtained by controlled rate TG of polyimide film in air are quite different from those obtained by conventional constant rate heating TG. A two step mass loss was observed during the constant rate heating TG, while mass loss proceeded as a single step process in the controlled rate TG. To elucidate the cause for this difference, kinetic analysis was made, and it was found that the reaction mechanism in a lower temperature range is different from those in a higher temperature range. The lower temperature decomposition is a single step process, and the higher temperature decomposition is a two-step process. The reason for the difference is that only the low temperature single step process is observed in the controlled rate TG, while both reactions are observed in the constant heating rate TG along with the temperature increase. This speculation was confirmed by isothermal TG. These facts show us another usefulness of controlled rate TG. To analyze the three types of TG data together, the Friedman—Ozawa method was used, and it is demonstrated to be the most appropriate and reliable.

Notes: Abstract Theoretical consideration has been made of the non-isothermal kinetics of consecutive reactions based on the superposition principle. In the model the first reaction product reacts to form the final product and the two reactions proceed independently. The amount of the first reaction product and the production rate of the final product have been obtained as a function of time for isothermal cases and as a function of the reduced times for non-isothermal cases.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between myocardial mitochondrial dysfunction and the degree plus duration of restricted coronary blood flow. 135 anesthetized and open-chest dogs were divided into 3 groups according to coronary occlusion time: 10, 20, and 60 min. Regional myocardial blood flow (MBF) was determined in both ischemic and nonischemic areas before and during coronary occlusion using the hydrogen gas clearance method. Myocardial mitochondria were prepared from each area in which MBF was determined after 10, 20, or 60 min of coronary ligation, and their respiratory control index (RCI), ADP/O, and rate of oxygen consumption in state III O2 (St. III O2) were measured. The MBF measured in 135 dogs before coronary ligation was 103±25 ml/min/100 g (mean±SD) for the area to be rendered ischemic and 101±24 ml/min/100 g for the control area. The MBF in the ischemic area did not cease completely following coronary ligation, and the distribution of MBF showed variations which seemed atributable to individual differences. In the 10-min group, no index of mitochondrial function of the ischemic area differed from that of the nonischemic area at any level of MBF. When MBF was less than 20 ml/min/100 g, RCI of mitochondria from the ischemic area was significantly lower than that from the nonischemic area, in the 20- and 60-min groups. When MBF was less than 20 ml/min/100 g, St. III O2 of mitochondria from the ischemic area significantly decreased compared with that from the nonischemic area, in the 20-min group. In the 60-min group, MBF less than 30 ml/min/100 g, St. III O2 of mitochondria from the ischemic area was likewise significantly decreased. Moreover, with MBF below 20 ml/min/100 g, both RCI and St. III O2 of mitochondria from the ischemic area were significantly lower in the 60-min group than in the 20-min group. These results indicate that ischemia-induced mitochondrial dysfunction depends on the degree of decrease in the blood flow of the area involved as well as on the duration of ischemia, and the blood flow that is critical for survival, based on mitochondrial function, is approximately 20 ml/min/100 g, i.e., a reduction to 20% of normal value.
