Notes: Abstract  This paper describes a technique for fabricating a LIGA mask that offers good compatibility with the silicon IC process. X-ray exposure can be eliminated from the LIGA mask-fabrication process, so that LIGA masks can be fabricated with existing silicon IC process equipment. A gold absorber pattern, 2 μm wide and 10 μm thick, has been successfully fabricated by combining a three-layer resist-patterning process with the electroplating process. Improvements in both the mask structure and fabrication process alleviate the problems of dust in a cleanroom and contamination in the etching chamber.

Notes: Abstract  High aspect ratio micro-fabrication method using metal injection molding (MIM) is developed. In the MIM process, the powder is mixed with the binder and the mixture is injection molded. The binder is extracted from the molded parts using supercritical carbon dioxide, and the parts are sintered. Employing this process, micro-pattern which has aspect ratio more than 5 can be molded by stainless-steel powder. In this method, a micro-pattern made by laser ablation is used as a die. As compared with other micro-fabrication techniques, this method can utilize the molding die repeatedly. Consequently, the cost of production micro-parts can be decreased by this method in the actual production process.

Notes: Abstract Fabrication techniques of microstructures with high resolution and high aspect ratio are necessary for practical microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) that have high performance and integration. In order to fabricate microstructures with sub-micron resolution and high aspect ratio, deep X-ray lithography has been investigated using the compact synchrotron radiation (SR) light source called “AURORA”. An X-ray mask for sub-micron deep X-ray lithography, which is composed of 1 μm thick Au as absorbers, 2 μm thick SiC as a membrane and 625 μm thick Si as a frame, was designed. In preliminary experiments, the following results were achieved: EB resist microstructures with an aspect ratio of 22 corresponding with 0.07 μm width and 1.3 μm height were formed; a 10 μm thick PMMA resist containing no warp was formed by direct polymerization, enabling more precise gap control.

Notes: Abstract High-power electrostatic microactuators using LIGA process have been fabricated. Comb drive type actuators and a wobble motor were designed and fabricated. A basic structure of the microactuators was composed of movable and fixed electrodes of Ni, a sacrificial layer of SiO2 and a Si substrate, and carried out by one mask process. As design rules, a minimum resist width of 2 μm, resist height of 120 μm, maximum width of movable parts of 10 μm, minimum width of fixed parts of 40 μm and driving voltage of about 100 V, were decided. A 120 μm-thick PMMA resist was formed on a Si substrate by a casting method. The PMMA was exposed using a compact SR source “AURORA”, using an X-ray mask with 7 μm-thick Au absorber on a 2 μm-thick poly-Si membrane. The exposed PMMA was developed by a developer. Ni microstructures with 100 μm-height, 2 μm-minimum width, 2 μm-minimum gap, and then maximum aspect ratio of 50, were made by electroforming. Ni microstructures used for movable electrodes were separated from the substrate by lateral etching of SiO2. After lateral etching of SiO2, Au wires were bonded to electrodes. Actuation of the comb drive type actuator and rotation of the wobble motor were confirmed. The applied voltage to the comb drive actuator and the wobble motor were 65 and 125 V.

Notes: The primary receptor (potD, Mr = 39 000) of the polyamine transport system in Escherichia coli has been crystallized by the vapor-diffusion method. Two crystal forms were obtained in the presence of spermidine, and were examined by X-ray analysis. Form I crystals, which diffract to 2.5 Å resolution, belong to the space group P21, with unit-cell dimensions a = 145.3, b = 69.1, c = 72.5 Å and β = 107.6°. Four molecules are contained in an asymmetric unit. These form two dimers that are related to each other by a local translation of about half of the unit cell along the a axis. The two protein molecules in each dimer are similarly related by a local dyad. Form II crystals diffract to 1.8 Å resolution and belong to the space group I41, with unit-cell dimensions a = b = 130.3 and c = 38.7 Å. They contain one molecule per asymmetric unit.

Notes: Pectinesterase was purified from the culture medium of Aspergillus japonicus completely free from pectin depolymerizing enzymes. The purified enzyme was able to convert high-methoxyl pectin into low-methoxyl pectin capable of forming strong gels with calcium ion. The maximum gel strength of enzyme-demethylated pectin was obtained at methoxyl content of 6.3%, calcium concentration of 41.8 mg/g of pectin and pH 3.5. The low-methoxyl pectin, however, formed weaker gels at low concentrations of calcium ion and low pH. DEAE-cellulose column chromatography indicated that the enzyme-demethylated pectin was homogeneous with respect to methoxyl groups of the molecules. It was suggested that this homogeneity may be probably responsible for high gel strength of the low-methoxyl pectin.
