Notizen: Abstract Incomplete bone contact with threaded acetabular components is usually attributable to the tapered thread design and sclerotic bone, and might be the reason for early loosening. The self-tapping flat threads of the Hofer-Imhof cup allow accurate insertion without incarceration, even in sclerotic bone. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this threaded cup design based on digitized measurements of bone contact area, six Hofer-Imhof cups were implanted into three human cadavers. The bone contact area at the threads was digitally analyzed on cadaver-explanted cups cut into horizontal and coronal sections. In cups fixed with ideal form fit, bone contact was 31.6% (range 8–55%) at the threads and 28.5% (range 0–49%) between the threads on average. In cups with incomplete bone contact secondary to insufficient reaming, the bone contact area averaged 27.4% (range 10–44%) at the threads. In sclerotic bone, the highest bone contact at the threads was 69%. The threads were the first part of the cup to achieve primary bone contact. Factors contributing to poor contact were incomplete reaming, sections which passed through the incisura of the acetabulum, and incomplete contact with the medial aspect of the acetabulum. The aim was to achieve complete bone contact. Because of the higher contact areas observed in sclerotic bone, some sclerotic bone should remain after reaming.

Notizen: Summary Muscle fibers re commonly classified histochemically into three types by the staining intensity for myosin ATPase combined with those for metabolic enzymes. Preincubation at pH 4.6 gives rise to three staining intensities of myosin ATPase which are also used for fiber typing. The two classification systems were compared by computer analysis of the individual staining profiles of over 2,500 fibers, and found not to be equivalent. The analysis showed metabolic heterogeneity among the fiber groups distinguished according to their differences in myosin ATPase.

Notizen: Summary Blood vessels surrounded by unusually wide perivascular spaces rich in connective tissue were observed in the brain of Lepidosteus (Ganoidei). Connective-tissue sheaths measuring up to 13 μm in width enclose arterioles and venules (40–70 μm in diameter), and even capillaries may be encompassed by a cuff formed by collagen fibers. Blood vessels with wide perivascular spaces are mainly located in the subependymal layer of the lateral ventricles, near the mesencephalic aqueduct and in the folded basal lining of the fourth ventricle. At the light-microscopic level these vessels do not show any distinct contact with nervous elements (axons). Some other brain regions of Lepidosteus, e.g. mesencephalic tectum, are supplied by a conventional type of capillaries, free of connective-tissue linings. For comparative reasons, brains of several selachian and teleostean species were examined with comparable histological methods. Distinct perivascular spaces were found in the pike, in the trout and in the eel. They are considerably richer in connective tissue than the occasionally observed narrow perivascular spaces in the shark. The significance of the abundant perivascular connective tissue in the brain of Lepidosteus is open to discussion; structural and functional problems of the brain-blood-barrier have been reviewed in this context. The brain of Lepidosteus appears to be a very suitable model for studies of blood supply, vascular ultrastructure and blood-brain-barrier functions.

Notizen: Summary A conspicuous accumulation of taste buds occurs in the rostral part of the plica sublingualis (“frenal lamella”) of Alouatta and Aotus forming taste areas (area gustatoria) superficially situated in the oral mucous membrane. They are found in close vicinity to the orifices of the sublingual salivary glands, but are lacking in the aboral part of the plica sublingualis. They do not occur in all primate species studied. A taste area does not projects above the surface of the surrounding tissue like a papilla. The taste buds open not in crypts or furrows of the oral mucosa, but directly into the spatium sublinguale of the oral cavity proper. In the anterior part of the cavum oris proprium different kinds and very differentiated qualities of sensorial information are perceived (touch, taste, olfaction, temperature). It is conceivable that the taste areas play an important role in perceiving fresh saliva, together with the other sensorial structures in this part of the mouth. This problem can be solved experimentally and by behavioral studies. In addition to its topographical relation to the tongue, the organon sublinguale of Callicebus is structurally very similar to the plica sublingualis of Aotus and Alouatta. Since a sublingua does not occur in New World monkeys, it can be concluded that this organ represents a plica sublingualis which became adherent to the undersurface of the tongue. This study was carried out at the Delta Regional Primate Research Center, Covington, Louisiana, U.S.A., and the Department of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University of Kassel, Germany. The study was supported by NIH Grant No. 5-RO1-DEO 3665-02 DEN and by a “U.S. Senior Scientist Award” from the Humboldt Foundation (Bonn, Germany)

Notizen: Summary 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) has been shown to produce degenerative changes in noradrenergic nerve terminals and preterminals in the CNS following intracisternal, intraventricular or direct injection into the brain parenchyma. Systemic injection of 6-OH-DA is known to result in degenerative changes in noradrenergic terminals in the peripheral nervous system. However, only a few studies have been carried out on the effects of systemic injections of 6 OH-DA on noradrenergic terminals in the CNS. In the present study cynomolgus and squirrel monkeys were injected intravenously on two successive days with total doses of 350mg/kg and 150 mg/kg of 6-OH-DA, respectively, and sacrificed at 2 and 24 h following the second injection. Degenerative changes in the area postrema (AP) neurons in all injected animals were characterized by a generalized increase in electron density of cytoplasmic elements in axonal terminals and preterminals. Multilamellar bodies, clusters of clear and dense core vesicles, increased numbers of secondary lysosomes, and an increase in the number of glycogen granules were observed in these structures. In astrocytes the amount of glycogen increased markedly in injected animals, but no other glial alterations were observed. The number of mast cells in the AP was greater in injected than in noninjected animals, both in the perivascular spaces (PVS) and in parenchymal locations. Cell processes in the PVS were occasionally observed to contain electron dense bodies, and degenerative changes were seen in supraependymal processes in some injected animals.

Notizen: Abstract The remarkable cognitive abilities of bats indicate that they may recognise particular conspecifics. Because of their highly developed auditory system, it is obvious that vocalisations of bats may give information about the individual emitting them. In a field study of the social behaviour in the Indian false vampire bat (Megaderma lyra), two different types of vocalisation were recorded and analysed. The bats emitted these vocalisations only while aggregating with conspecifics inside the day roost. The “landing strophe” consisted of a number of brief multiharmonic downward frequency-modulated (FMdown) sounds which levelled off as a constant frequency (CF), and the “clatter strophe” was composed of a number of multiharmonic FMdown sounds which became shallow at the end as a short CF. The sounds of the landing strophe and the ¶clatter strophe differed in repetition rate, duration, harmonic components and frequency. Time pattern and peak frequency of the two sound types differed highly significantly between single, unidentified bats. The sounds were inter-individually distinct when the three parameters were combined as an acoustical space. Therefore, these vocalisations might be used for individual recognition in adult bats.

Notizen: Summary The neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) has been shown to produces degenerative changes in noradrenergic nerve terminals and preterminals in the CNS following intracisternal, intraventricular, and stereotaxic injection into the brain parenchyma. Systemic injections of this drug are also known to result in degenerative changes in noradrenergic terminals in the peripheral nervous system and in the circumventricular organs (CVO; areas of the CNS which lie outside the blood brain barrier). In the present study eight adult female cynomolgus monkeys were employed. The four experimental animals were injected on two successive days with 150 and 200 mg/kg 6-OH-DA, respectively. The four controls received only the diluent consisting of 0.1% ascorbic acid in normal saline. Two animals from each of the experimental and control groups were sacrificed at 2 h and 24 h after the second injection. Degenerative changes in the SFO neurons were characterized by a generalized increase in electron density of cytoplasmic elements in axonal terminals and preterminals. Multilamellar bodies, and increases in the number of dense core vesicles, dense bodies and secondary lysosomes were also observed after treatment with 6-OH-DA. The neurons showed clumping of mitochondria, which also appeared to be undergoing degenerative changes. The vacuoles in some supraependymal cells were greatly dilated as was the Golgi apparatus in the ependymal cells. The ependymal cell layer appeared to be intact, but there were areas immediately deep to this cell layer that contained large extracellular spaces. This increase in extracellular space was also commonly observed surrounding the perivascular spaces. These phenomena greatly contribute to the “spongy” appearance that the SFO takes on after 6-OH-DA administration.
