Notes: Ultrashort laser pulses having 50 fs duration were used to cause planer fracture, i.e., spallation, in pure aluminum foils at intensities of (0.07–1)×1015 W/cm2. A linear relationship was obtained between spall depth and foil thickness, approximately corresponding to the proportions that were obtained in other relations for 300 ps and longer laser pulse irradiation. Spall thicknesses less than 5 μm were obtained in foils thinner than 50 μm, and revealed small-scale spallation at a strain rate exceeding 108 s−1. This ultrashort laser pulse evidently produced a shock wave followed by a steep unloading stress profile. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thyroid hormones regulate growth hormone (GH) secretion by actions both at the hypothalamus and at the pituitary gland. At the level of the pituitary, thyroid hormones increase GH and GH-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R) mRNA expression. To test if thyroid hormones might also regulate the pituitary expression of mRNA for the recently identified GH secretagogue (GHS) receptor, GHS-R, primary pituitary cell cultures from adult male rats were treated with triiodothyronine (T3) and GHS-R mRNA levels were assessed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. T3 increased pituitary GHS-R mRNA levels in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The stimulatory action of T3 on GHS-R mRNA levels was also observed in the presence of the RNA synthesis inhibitor, actinomycin D, indicating that gene transcription is not required. Closer examination of the decay rates of GHS-R mRNA in the presence of actinomycin D revealed T3 extended the half-life of the GHS-R mRNA from 8 h (basal) to15 h, demonstrating that T3 increases GHS-R mRNA levels in vitro by increasing message stability.

Notes: Glucocorticoids regulate growth hormone (GH) secretion by modulating both hypothalamic and pituitary function. At the level of the pituitary, glucocorticoids increase GH and GH-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R) gene expression. To test if glucocorticoids might also regulate the pituitary expression of the recently identified GH secretagogue (GHS) receptor, GHS-R; adult male rats were adrenalectomized or sham operated, and treated with the synthetic glucocorticoid (dexamethasone, 200 µg/day) or vehicle for 8 days. Pituitary GHS-R mRNA levels were assessed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Adrenalectomy decreased pituitary GHS-R mRNA to 45% of vehicle-treated, sham-operated rats (P 〈 0.05). Administration of dexamethasone increased GHS-R mRNA levels in sham-operated as well as in adrenalectomized rats (199 ± 24% (P 〈 0.05) and 369 ± 48% (P 〈 0.01) of vehicle-treated controls). Addition of dexamethasone to primary rat pituitary cell cultures increased GHS-R mRNA levels in a dose- and time-dependent manner while the transcriptional inhibitor, actinomycin D, completely blocked the stimulatory action of dexamethasone. Taken together, these results suggest glucocorticoids directly increase pituitary GHS-R mRNA levels by stimulating GHS-R gene transcription.

Notes: Abstract Tantalum electrodes covered with oxide films, the thickness of which ranged from 40–90 Å, were investigated. Indium or gold was deposited on the oxide film by the vacuum deposition technique to prevent any change of oxide film properties by polarization. Polarization curves of In¦oxide film¦Ta diodes in a chloride buffer solution of pH 2.3 almost coincided with theI/V curves of them in the solid state. A redox reaction of a ferricyanide/ferrocyanide couple at Au ¦oxide film¦Ta was also perfectly controlled by electron transfer through the insulating oxide layer. Electron conduction with anodic polarization was mainly brought about by the electron tunnelling, while the Schottky emission possibly predominated in the conduction with cathodic polarization. Actual rates of corrosion of indium deposited on the films did not accord with those predicted by extrapolation of polarization curves to the open circuit potential, owing to the high electric resistance of the oxide films.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of the use of modified DSA-type electrodes as positive grids in lead-acid batteries was examined by anodic polarization measurements, charge-discharge tests and self-discharge tests of the Ti/RuO2 and Ti/RuO2/β-PbO2 electrodes. The passivation of a titanium base was retarded by using a very thin film of ruthenium dioxide. The Ti/RuO2/β-PbO2 electrode could be used as a positive grid to a certain extent. On the other hand, the Ti/RuO2 electrode showed the worse characteristics for the positive grid, mainly due to the low oxygen overvoltage of the ruthenium dioxide layer. Some other problems to be solved have also been pointed out.

Notes: Abstract Distribution profiles of dissolved antimony in corrosion films on a Pb-Sb alloy were obtained by means of SIMS in the in-depth mode. The corrosion films were prepared by multi-triangular potential scans of the alloy in 5 M H2SO4. It was found that independent of the final polarization potential the dissolved antimony distributed in such a manner that there was a monotonically increasing trend in the content from the surface of the corrosion film to the lead alloy substratum.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of antimony within the oxide films on Pb-Sb alloy prepared by potentiostatic oxidation in H2SO4 solutions was examined by SIMS. The study of oxide films prepared by applying different potentials for three hours showed that two types of film were obtained depending on whether the potential was more negative or more positive than 1·5 V. Antimony profiles were obtained for films at several stages in the initial growth. It was found that antimony was retained in the oxide film at 1·5 V during both nucleation and two- or three-dimensional growth of PbO2 and at 1·6 V during the lateral overlaps of three-dimensional centres of PbO2. Relationships between the antimony distribution profiles and the oxide film growth are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effect of surface treatment of the titanium base on the characteristics of the DSA-type positive grids and plates was examined, using mechanically polished, sandblasted and chemically etched titanium. It was found that the anodic durability of the grids and the service life of the plates were greatly increased and the self-discharge rate of the DSA-type plates was significantly decreased by sandblasting and chemical etching of the titanium base.
