Notes: In rats, the cell bodies of the histaminergic neuronal system are clustered in five distinct cell groups (E1–E5) within the posterior hypothalamus. On the basis of tract tracing studies, these histaminergic subgroups have been regarded as one functional unit. In addition to its well-characterized role in arousal, locomotor activity, metabolism, feeding, drinking and behaviour, as well as in coordination of autonomic functions, histamine has been implicated in regulation of the hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenocortical axis during stress. To address the capacity of different histaminergic subgroups to respond to various challenges, we revealed c-Fos, the immediate early gene marker of activated neurons, in histamine synthesizing neurons by combining c-Fos immunocytochemistry with in situ hybridization of histidine decarboxylase (HDC) mRNA. Compared to the negligible colocalization of these markers in control rats, restraint, insulin-induced hypoglycaemia and foot shock resulted in specific activation of histamine synthesizing neurons of the E4 and E5 subgroup in the tuberomammillary region. Up to 36% of HDC mRNA-expressing cells show c-Fos immunoreactivity in the E5 region. In addition, some neurons of the E1, E2 and E3 histaminergic groups were activated after restraint stress. Many less c-Fos-positive histaminergic neurons were detected after immobilization and dehydration. Ether stress, acute hyperosmotic stimulus or injection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide did not activate hypothalamic HDC-positive neurons. These results suggest, for the first time, the functional heterogeneity of histaminergic neuron population, the components of which are recruited in a stressor- and subgroup-specific manner.

Notes: [Auszug] In a new approach to this problem we carried out the crystallisation of DL-NaNH4 tartrate in the presence and absence of chiral p particles from 3aP. Below 27 C, DL-NaNH4 tartrate crystallises in racemic conglomerates18, that is, D and L crystallisation centres form independently and then grow. Any ...

Notes: Summary Isothermal crystallization of D,L-sodium-ammonium tartrate with traces of different impurities admixed shows that the added chiral contaminations produce a preferential crystallization of the tartrate isomer of same handedness. The critical lowest concentration of effective seeding agents is 0.1-0.5 %. 1 % optically active excess material induces 1.0-3.6 % optical purity in the deposited crystals. An analysis of the relevant data reported so far gives similar figures in different crystallization systems. The relation of the results to the suggested lattice energy difference between enantiomers is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Eleven bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) were tagged with satellite-linked dive recorders in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, Norway, in May 1994. These animals included four mother-pup pairs and three single pups. The seals were tracked for 21–258 days. A total of ˜207,000 dives were recorded. Bearded seal mothers showed limited movements during the nursing and moulting periods. After weaning, the pups moved out of the tagging area and dispersed coastally. One pup left Svalbard and moved far offshore to Greenland and Jan Mayen. Bearded seal adults displayed a bi-modal dive behaviour, with peaks of activity that were shallower than 10 m or from 50 to 70 m. Most dives for adult seals (97%) were shorter than 10 min. Young pups performed dives that were shallower and shorter in duration than their accompanying mothers, but diving skills improved rapidly with age. Six of the seven pups dived deeper than 448 m by the time they were 2 months old. Analyses of movement data with respect to separation of mother-pup pairs suggest a lactation period of about 24 days.

Notes: Abstract Seven post-moulting adult ringed seals (Phoca hispida) were equipped with Satellite Linked Dive Recorders in Svalbard in July 1996 to determine if ringed seals conduct long-distance post-moulting feeding excursions, and to obtain details of their diving behaviour. The mean duration of tags was 206 days (range 103–325). Two seals swam 400 km north to the drifting pack ice (82°N). The rest undertook more local movements. Forty-eight percent of all dives were shallower than 20 m and 90% were shallower than 100 m. Ninety-five percent of all dive durations were shorter than 10 min, and 99.5% were shorter than 15 min. This study has shown that adult ringed seals undertake varying patterns of post-moulting excursions.

Notes: Summary Vinblastine, given intravenously to rats, leads to disappearance of microtubules, formation of paracrystalline inclusions and accumulation of fat droplets in the cytoplasm of the perisinusoidal cells of the liver suggesting that microtubules of the perisinusoidal cells play a role in lipid metabolism.

Notes: Summary Electron microscopy revealed the presence of cytoplasmic tubular aggregates in the capillary endothelium of a sparsely granulated growth hormone cell adenoma removed surgically from a 25-year-old female patient with acromegaly. To our knowledge, this is the second publication describing these structures in hypophysial growth hormone cell adenomas.

Notes: Summary Unusually large, oval and pleomorphic secretory granules were noted by electron microscopy in an acidophilic adenoma of the pituitary. The tumor, which was removed by surgery from a 42-year-old woman with elevated blood growth hormone levels and the clinical features of acromegaly, was found to contain growth hormone by the immunoperoxidase technique. This ultrastructural abnormality of secretory granules was not reported so far and was not seen among the 58 cases of growth hormone-producing adenomas investigated in our laboratory. The present case clearly shows that the cytogenesis and cellular composition of pituitary adenomas cannot be determined by solely examining the size and shape of secretory granules.
