Notes: The activities of mitochondrial hexokinase and adenylate kinase have been measured in various osmotic conditions. Sucrose, potassium chloride and ammonium acetate were used as solutes. The total hexokinase activity of mitochondrial suspensions increased steadily with decreasing osmolarity of the sucrose or salt solutions. The hexokinase activity of mitochondrial suspensions in water was 93 per cent of that measured in the presence of Triton X-100.The increase in hexokinase activity was irreversible even after very short exposure (90 s) to hypo-osmotic conditions. Total adenylate kinase activity was not affected by osmotic conditions. Adenylate kinase activity increased hyperbolically in supernatants prepared from mitochondrial suspensions with decreasing osmolarity of the sucrose or salt solutions. Besides monitoring adenylate kinase leakage as a measure of outer mitochondrial membrane disruption, mitochondrial swelling was followed by measurement of the turbidity of mitochondrial suspensions at 520 nm. The data has been interpreted in terms of binding of some hexokinase to the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Notes: [Auszug] Carbon fibres used in these experiments were prepared by the method described in UK Pat. 1,110,791. In the experiments on irradiation they were typical Type I (high modulus) and Type II (high strength) fibres, while in the experiment on boron-doping they were always Type II. Samples of Type I and ...

Abstract: Summary Obesity has been known for a long time to be an important symptom of the syndrome of Morgagni and Morel. The writer — after a morphological description of this type of obesity — gives a number of precise quantitative findings which are based on a study of 100 cases of hyperostosis frontalis interna. These cases were compared statistically to a series of controls. The size and span are identical in both series. On the other side, the mean average of weights is significantly different (test of F=15,723***). The numbering test of the cases of obesity is also significant with the test of χ2 of 8,056**. Finally the importance of obesity as a finding is defined within the clinical picture of the syndrome of Morgagni and Morel; this finding must be considered as a symptom which is not always present, but is found in a statistically significant number of cases of the syndrome.

Abstract: Summary The term uveo-meningo-encephalitis associates two syndromes therefore considered different from each other: Harada's disease and Vogt-Koyanagi syndrome. As a clinical entity it is at the present time well defined and its evolution occurs in three phases; first meningeal involvement, later on ocular manifestations and finally a phase of recovery, which can extend over months. In the course of the last phase there is a regression of uveitis, and cutaneous and mucous lesions may often appear. In the present paper the authors report one case of uveo-meningo-encephalitis occurring in a 27 years old spanish woman. The evolution was typical but a biological peculiarity was represented by the very elevated white cells count with polymorphonuclear predominance, both in peripheral blood and cerebrospinal-fluid. Though the initial phase of meningitis was extremely dramatic, recovery was satisfactory and a marked regression of ear and eye lesions was observed.
