Notes: Relaxation processes in polymethylmethacrylate were investigated using light scattering and mechanical relaxation techniques. The acoustic attenuation data cover the frequency range from 1 Hz to 17 GHz and the light scattering from 0.5 to 10 000 GHz. Analysis of the data in a broad temperature range (80–350 K) shows that the model of the asymmetric double-well potentials, traditionally used for description of the acoustic attenuation in glasses, cannot describe all the data consistently. It is shown that assuming an additional relaxation in GHz region with a constant loss spectrum provides a good agreement of the model with experimental data. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using photoemission and inverse photoemission, we have been able to characterize the Cr2O3 oxide surface of CrO2 thin films. The Cr2O3 surface oxide exhibits a band gap of about 3 eV, although the bulk CrO2 is conducting. The thickness of this insulating Cr2O3 layer is twice the photoelectron escape depth which is about 2 nm thick. The effective Cr2O3 surface layer Debye temperature, describing motion normal to the surface, is about 370 K. From a comparison of CrO2 films grown by different techniques, with different Cr2O3 content, evidence is provided that the CrO2 may polarize the Cr2O3. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] The nature of the transformation by which a supercooled liquid ‘freezes’ to a glass—the glass transition—is a central issue in condensed matter physics but also affects many other fields, including biology. Substantial progress has been made in understanding this ...

Notes: Abstract We study the critical behavior of frustrated systems by means of the Padé-Borel resummed three-loop renormalization group expansions and numerical Monte Carlo simulations. Amazingly, for six-component spins, where the transition is second-order, both approaches disagree. This unusual situation is analyzed both from the point of view of the convergence of the resummed series and from the possible relevance of nonperturbative effects.

Notes: Abstract Cross sections measured for the interactions of incident neutron-excess nuclei 6He and 11Li with other nuclei are analyzed in terms of expressions obtained for relevant integrated cross sections within the diffraction approximation. The results of this analysis suggest that there exists a dineutron configuration in the 6He nucleus and that there is no such configuration in the 11Li nucleus. On the basis of calculations performed for various observables, some new specific experiments are proposed for discovering dineutrons more reliably in nuclei having a neutron halo.

Notes: Abstract The paper is devoted to the calculation of renormalization-group (RG) functions in the O(n)-symmetry two-dimensional model of the λϕ 4 type in the five-loop approximation and to an analysis of the critical behavior of systems described by this model. Five-loop expansions for the β function and the critical indices are determined in bulk theory. They are summed up using the Padé-Borel and Padé-Borel-Le Roy methods, making it possible to optimize the summation procedure and to estimate the accuracy of the obtained numerical values. It is shown that in the Ising (n=1) case, as well as in other cases, the inclusion of the five-loop contribution to the β function displaces the coordinate of the Wilson fixed point only insignificantly, leaving it outside the interval formed by the results of computations on lattices; even “spreads” of the error in the renormalization group and lattice estimates do not overlap. This discrepancy is attributed to the effect of the nonanalytic com-ponent of the β function, which cannot be determined in perturbation theory. A computation of critical indices proves that, although the inclusion of the five-loop terms in the corresponding RG expansion slightly improves the concordance with the exact results, the nonanalytic contributions are apparently also significant in this case.

Notes: Abstract The renormalization-group functions governing the critical behavior of the three-dimensional weakly-disordered Ising model are calculated in the five-loop approximation. The random fixed point location and critical exponents for impure Ising systems are estimated by means of the Padé-Borel-Leroy resummation of the renormalization-group expansions derived. The asymptotic critical exponents are found to be γ=1.325 ± 0.003, η=0.025 ± 0.01, ν= 0.671 ± 0.005, α=−0.0125 ± 0.008, β=0.344 ± 0.006, while for the correction-to-scaling exponent, a less accurate estimate ω=0.32 ± 0.06 is obtained.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic properties of the intermetallic compounds Gd1−x LaxMn2Ge2 (layered tetragonal crystal structure of the type ThCr2Si2), investigated in the present work and in [1] A. Sokolov, et al., Sol. State Commun. 105, 289 (1998), are discussed. It is shown that the basic characteristics of the magnetic ordering of these compounds—magnetic phase transitions from the ferrimagnetic into the antiferromagnetic state and vice versa—observed with increasing temperature in compositions with x 〈 0.1, the effect of a magnetic field on these transitions, the temperature dependences of the magnetization of these intermetallic compounds, as well as their magnetic T-x diagram can be described quantitatively in the Yafet-Kittel model for ferrimagnets with a negative exchange interaction in one of the sublattices using parameters determined in [2] A. Yu. Sokolov et al., JETP 89, 723 (1999) from investigations of the system Gd1−x YxMn2Ge2, taking into account the dependence of the interplanar exchange interaction Mn-Mn on the crystal lattice parameter a.

Notes: Abstract Polarization aberrations (PAs) of laser radiation, defined as distortions of the wave-polarization characteristics, are considered within the framework of wave theory. The parameters describing these aberrations are introduced. It is established that PAs already appear in the paraxial region. PAs of a thin lens are calculated using the method of wave-polarization matrices. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the polarization state is modified at the axis of the laser beam.

Notes: Abstract. The electronic structure of the strongly Coulomb correlated cuprate CuGeO3 has been calculated by the local-density-approximation method (LDA + U). The parameter U was varied from 0 to 8 eV. The results of the band-structure calculations are compared with experimental data obtained by means of X-ray photoelectron and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy methods (Cu L $\alpha$ and O K $\alpha$ X-ray emission spectra). It is established that a LDA + U calculation with U = 4 eV reproduces well the X-ray photoelectron and X-ray resonant emission spectral data.
