Notes: Abstract Measurements of magnetization in static fields up to 60 kOe and magnetic susceptibility in weak ac fields of the Y(Ni1−x Mx)3 and Y2(Ni1−x Mx)7 intermetallics (M=Fe and Cu, x max=0.2), as well of the specific heat of these systems for some compositions are reported. It was found that these intermetallics are ferromagnetic at low temperature, and that their spontaneous magnetizations M s at 4.2 K and Curie temperatures T C decrease monotonically with increasing copper concentration. The magnetic susceptibility of the Y(Ni1−x Fex)3 system with 0.06≲x≲0.2 was observed to decrease rapidly with the temperature lowered below a characteristic temperature T s. One of possible reasons for such an anomaly is shown to be the onset in this concentration region of the reentrant spin-glass state at low temperatures. The results obtained demonstrate that the tight-binding d-band model fails to explain the evolution of the magnetic properties of YNi3 and Y2Ni7 in the case of small substitutions of iron and copper for nickel.

Notes: Abstract The longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction λ of the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 in the b-c plane is measured in magnetic fields up to 20 T both above and below the transition temperature T sp=14.3K. It is found that for a given crystallographic direction the value of magnetostriction is weakly dependent on the magnetic field direction. In the uniform U phase at T⩾T sp, λ is negative and approximately equal in the b and c directions, while in the dimerized D phase at T〈T sp, λ is positive and λ b 〉λ c . At low temperatures, λ increases sharply at the magnetic-field-induced transition from the dimerized to the magnetic M phase. The experimental data allow estimation of the stress derivatives of the antiferromagnetic intrachain exchange interaction parameter and of the stress dependence of the critical field of the D-Mphase transition.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic properties of the intermetallic compounds Gd1−x LaxMn2Ge2 (layered tetragonal crystal structure of the type ThCr2Si2), investigated in the present work and in [1] A. Sokolov, et al., Sol. State Commun. 105, 289 (1998), are discussed. It is shown that the basic characteristics of the magnetic ordering of these compounds—magnetic phase transitions from the ferrimagnetic into the antiferromagnetic state and vice versa—observed with increasing temperature in compositions with x 〈 0.1, the effect of a magnetic field on these transitions, the temperature dependences of the magnetization of these intermetallic compounds, as well as their magnetic T-x diagram can be described quantitatively in the Yafet-Kittel model for ferrimagnets with a negative exchange interaction in one of the sublattices using parameters determined in [2] A. Yu. Sokolov et al., JETP 89, 723 (1999) from investigations of the system Gd1−x YxMn2Ge2, taking into account the dependence of the interplanar exchange interaction Mn-Mn on the crystal lattice parameter a.
