Notes: Background Hair keratins are specifically expressed in hair and nails. We previously demonstrated the expression of hair keratin basic 1 mRNA in pilomatrixomas. We recently developed a method for immunohistochemical staining of the group of acidic keratins, which have not yet been investigated in human tumours. Objectives To study the expression of eight members of the type I hair keratin subfamily in pilomatrixomas and other skin tumours of follicular origin. Methods We performed immunohistochemistry on paraffin sections of formalin-fixed pilomatrixomas (40), trichoepitheliomas (10), trichoblastomas (10), desmoplastic trichoepitheliomas (10) and basal cell carcinomas (10), using antibodies against type I hair keratins hHa1, hHa2, hHa3-II, hHa4, hHa5, hHa6, hHa7 and hHa8 as well as cytokeratin CK17. Results While CK17 was found in almost all tumours investigated, hair keratins were exclusively expressed in pilomatrixomas. Their expression was restricted to areas of transitional cells, located between outer basophilic matricial cells and an inner zone of eosinophilic shadow cells. The most frequently and most strongly expressed hair keratins were hHa1, hHa2, hHa5 and hHa8, whereas hHa4 and hHa6 were only weakly expressed. No positive staining was observed with anti-hHa3-II and anti-hHa7 antibodies. Hair keratin expression in intermediate maturation stage pilomatrixomas resembled that of normal hair follicles, with early matricial and cuticular keratins hHa5 and hHa2 being expressed in lower transitional cells, followed by expression of early cortex keratins hHa1 and hHa8 in intermediate transitional cells and the late cortex keratins hHa4 and hHa6 in upper transitional cells. The latter were, however, seen only in a few intermediate maturation stage pilomatrixomas and were generally absent in late-stage pilomatrixomas. Conclusions These changes in hair keratin expression patterns indicate that the maturation of pilomatrixomas towards large areas of shadow cells is associated with a gradual loss of differentiation-specific hair keratins. The complex hair keratin expression in pilomatrixomas is a further argument in favour of a hair matrix origin of this tumour.

Notes: Individual movement patterns of adult ide Leuciscus idus, a Eurasian river-dwelling cyprinid, in two lowland rivers were measured all year-round during 1997–2000 to assess migratory behaviour and variation between and within these populations. In the River Elbe, a 1091 km long lowland river with a free flowing stretch of 590 km, 24 ide were implanted with radio transmitters. Fish were hand-tracked all year-round once a week in the main study area (75 km), and once per 6 weeks in a larger area (321 km). In the River Vecht, a 190 km long highly regulated river with six weirs and fishways in the Dutch section, 25 ide were implanted with transponders. An array of three automatic detection stations covering the entire river width, registered each individual passage continuously. Within population variation in year-round movement patterns was very high. In both rivers a similar continuum was found from individuals using a river stretch of only a few km for spawning, feeding and wintering, to individuals migrating 〉100 km. The populations in the two rivers differed, however, in spawning site fidelity. In the River Vecht spawning site fidelity was observed in all individuals and appeared much stronger than in the River Elbe, where individuals moving downstream 〉60–90 km tended to adopt new spawning sites in the next year. Moreover, some ide in the River Vecht migrated upstream to wintering habitats in autumn, whereas this was not observed in the River Elbe. The results suggest that ide is a flexible species capable of using a wide variety of movement patterns and scales.

Notes: Two monitoring programmes in estuarine and freshwater systems in the Netherlands both show a recent increase in anadromous North Sea houting Coregonus oxyrhynchus after it disappeared there in the 1940s. Most houting were immature and caught during the feeding season indicating that at present the riverine and estuarine waters in the Netherlands mainly function as a feeding habitat.

Notes: Aim : To determine if nasogastric tube administration of the enteric-coated pellets from an opened esomeprazole capsule provides bioavailability similar to oral dosing with the intact capsule. Methods : A randomized, single-centre, open-label, two-period crossover pharmacokinetic study consisting of two 5-day dosing periods separated by a 7- to 14-day washout period was conducted. Healthy subjects between the ages of 18 and 50 years received esomeprazole 40 mg once daily either orally as an intact capsule, or as a suspension of the enteric-coated pellets from an opened capsule in water through a nasogastric tube. Results : In 47 evaluable subjects, the 90% confidence intervals were 0.87–1.08 and 0.93–1.25 for the geometric mean of the ratio of nasogastric tube administration relative to administration of the intact capsule for the area under the plasma concentration–time curve and for maximum plasma concentration, respectively, on day 1, demonstrating bioequivalence. Oral and nasogastric administration also demonstrated similar bioavailabilities on day 5. Esomeprazole was well tolerated regardless of the mode of administration. Conclusions : Nasogastric tube administration of the enteric-coated pellets from an opened esomeprazole 40 mg capsule provides bioavailability similar to oral dosing. Administration of the contents of an opened esomeprazole 40 mg capsule in water through a nasogastric tube is a practical alternative for patients with feeding tubes who require effective gastric acid suppression, but cannot swallow an oral preparation.

Notes: Abstract  Blackleg caused by Leptosphaeria maculans is one of the most important diseases affecting oilseed rape worldwide. Sinapis arvensis is valuable for the transfer of blackleg resistance to oilseed rape (Brassica napus) because this species contains high resistance against various aggressive isolates of the blackleg fungus. These include at least one Australian isolate which has been found to overcome resistance originating from species with the Brassica B genome, until now the major source for interspecific transfer of blackleg resistance. Backcross offspring from intergeneric crosses between Brassica napus and S. arvensis were subjected to phytopathological studies and molecular cytogenetic analysis with genomic in situ hybridisation (GISH). The BC3S progenies included fertile plants exhibiting high seedling (cotyledon) and adult plant resistance associated with the presence of an acrocentric addition chromosome from S. arvensis. In addition, some individuals with adult plant resistance but cotyledon susceptibility were observed to have a normal B. napus karyotype with no visible GISH signals, indicating possible resistant introgression lines. Phytopathological analysis of selfing progenies from 3 different highly resistant BC3 plants showed that seedling and adult plant resistance are probably conferred by different loci.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The interaction of temperature and velocity fields for polymer melts in planeCouette flow was investigated. It was found analytically that the thermal development from a uniform initial temperature to the equilibrium temperature field (in which all the dissipated flow energy is conducted to the walls) is almost completed at Fo=1. The duration of this development is nearly independent of the system, whether it is driven at constant speed or with a constant force. — The interaction of temperature and velocity field is more intensive the larger theGriffith numberG. The viscosity may be taken as independent of temperature up toG=1 and as linearly dependent on the temperature up toG=10. Furthermore, the influence of the temperature on the velocity field is much less in a shear thinning than in a Newtonian fluid.

Notes: Abstract  The linear viscoelastic data for model star polymer melts with varying functionality and arm molecular weight were represented by means of a modified Baumgaertel-Schausberger-Winter (BSW) relaxation time spectrum, based on data analysis with the parsimonius model of Baumgaertel et al., reported in 1990. In the case of high arm functionality, the second slow terminal relaxation observed by Vlassopoulos et al. in 1997, was captured with a straightforward extension of the BSW model using broad cut-off functions. This study represents a potentially promising attempt to extend the applicability of this representation of viscoelastic data to more complex architectures, beyond simple linear chains which are characterized by self-similarity. The casting of linear viscoelastic data into spectra allows the exploration of star polymer behavior. It is a necessary step in preparation for large scale complex flow calculations in conjunction with constitutive models and for material databases.

Notes: Abstract The equations of linear and angular momentum for nematic liquid crystals have been described with Ericksen's transversely isotropic fluid [TIF] model and solved for start-up of shear flow at constant rate and varying initial alignment conditions. An analytical solution for the rotation provides predictions of the nematic director which closely agree with experimental results of Boudreau et al. (1999), supporting the validity of Ericksen's TIF model. The solution is limited to flows where the effects of director gradients are negligible.
