    Notes: In this paper some nonlinear characteristics of small amplitude dust ion acoustic solitary wave in three component dusty plasma consisting of electrons, ions, and dust grains have been studied. Simultaneously, the charge fluctuation dynamics of the dust grains under the assumption that the dust charging time scale is much smaller than the dust hydrodynamic time scale has been considered here. The ion dust collision has also been incorporated. It has been seen that a damped Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation governs the nonlinear dust ion acoustic wave. The damping arises due to ion dust collision, under the assumption that the ion hydrodynamical time scale is much smaller than that of the ion dust collision. Numerical investigations reveal that the dust ion acoustic wave admits only a positive potential, i.e., compressive soliton. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of nonadiabatic dust charge variation on the nonlinear dust acoustic wave in a dusty plasma consisting of warm adiabatic dust grains, isothermal electrons and nonisothermal ions have been investigated by reductive perturbation technique. It has been shown that due to the nonadiabatic dust charge variation and also for the presence of nonisothermal ions, nonlinear dust acoustic wave is governed by a modified Korteweg–de Vries Burger (mKdVB) equation. The Burger term arises due to the nonadiabatic dust charge variation, whereas the nonlinear terms are modified due the different effects of nonisothermal ions. Numerical integration of mKdVB equation shows that the nonlinear dust acoustic wave admits negative potentials with the oscillatory (dispersion dominant) or monotonic (dissipation dominant) shock transition and exhibits compressional shock wave. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of ion–dust collisions on small amplitude nonlinear dust ion acoustic waves has been investigated. Analytical investigation shows that propagation of the small amplitude wave is governed by Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) Burger equation. It is found that the coefficient of the Burger term is proportional to the ion viscosity, which arises through ion–dust collisions and depends on the temperatures and number densities of the electrons, ions and also on the number density of dust grains, as seen in a recent experiment (Nakamura et al.). Numerical investigations on the basis of that experimental data show that the dust–ion acoustic wave exhibits both oscillatory and monotonic shocks depending on the number density of dust particles, as observed in that experiment [Nakamura et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 1602 (1999)]. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An interspecific hybrid between a wild species, Brassica fruticulosa (2n = 16, FF) and a crop Brassica species, B. rapa (2n = 20, AA) was synthesized using sequential ovary-ovule culture on MS medium supplemented with casein hydrolysate. Morphological, molecular and cytogenetic analysis confirmed the true hybrid nature of the offspring. The F1 plants (2n = 18) were intermediate in morphology, highly pollen-sterile as well as self-sterile. A maximum of three bivalents per PMC was recorded, but 14 I + 2 II was the most common meiotic configuration. Normal pollen fertility and regular bivalent (18 II) formation was observed in the amphiploid sectors of the hybrid plants. The F1 hybrid harboured significantly lower aphid populations than the crop Brassica parent.

    Notes: Metabolite profiling in succinate semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH; Aldh5a1–/–) deficient mice previously revealed elevated γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and total GABA in urine and total brain and liver extracts. In this study, we extend our metabolic characterization of these mutant mice by documenting elevated GHB and total GABA in homogenates of mutant kidney, pancreas and heart. We quantified β-alanine (a GABA homolog and putative neurotransmitter) to address its potential role in pathophysiology. We found normal levels of β-alanine in urine and total homogenates of mutant brain, heart and pancreas, but elevated concentrations in mutant kidney and liver extracts. Amino acid analysis in mutant total brain homogenates revealed no abnormalities except for significantly decreased glutamine, which was normal in mutant liver and kidney extracts. Regional amino acid analysis (frontal cortex, parietal cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum) in mutant mice confirmed glutamine results. Glutamine synthetase protein and mRNA levels in homogenates of mutant mouse brain were normal. We profiled organic acid patterns in mutant brain homogenates to assess brain oxidative metabolism and found normal concentrations of Kreb's cycle intermediates but increased 4,5-dihydroxyhexanoic acid (a postulated derivative of succinic semialdehyde) levels. We conclude that SSADH-deficient mice represent a valid metabolic model of human SSADH deficiency, manifesting focal neurometabolic abnormalities which could provide key insights into pathophysiologic mechanisms.

    Notes: Summary.  In order to define the prevalence of haemostatic defects in women presenting with menorrhagia in our region, the coagulation data on women bleeders investigated in the Department of Haematology, AIIMS, were analysed. A total of 337 of the 2200 menorrhagic women investigated were characterized to have an inherited bleeding disorder; 221 of these 337 women presented with menorrhagia alone while 116 also had other associated bleeding manifestations as prolonged bleeding from injury site, ecchymotic patches in the skin, epistaxis, haematomas, haemarthroses and major bleeds like intracerebral bleeding. The tests performed included bleeding time (BT), platelet count, prothrombin time (PT), prothrombin consumption index (PCI), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), PF3 release with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) at 0 and 20 min, total PF3 assay and platelet Aggregation studies with collagen, ADP, adrenaline, arachidonic acid and ristocetin. Coagulation factor assays, von Willebrand antigen estimation, ristocetin cofactor assay and electron microscopy were performed wherever necessary.Inherited platelet dysfunction was seen in 283 (83.9%) of the patients. Amongst these, isolated PF3 availability defect was seen in 163 (48.4%) cases. Glanzman's thrombasthenia was seen in 30 (8.9%) patients, Storage pool disease in eight (2.4%) patients, arachidonic acid pathway defect in five (1.5%) patients and Bernard–Soulier Syndrome in six (1.8%) patients. In 71 (21.1%) patients, the platelet function defect could not be classified into any specific subtypes. Inherited defects of coagulation were observed in 54 (16%) of the cases. Amongst these, von Willebrand disease (vWD) was the most frequent being seen in 40 (11.9%) of the cases. Factor XIII deficiency was seen in one (0.3%), factor X deficiency in four (1.2%), factor VII deficiency in one (0.3%) and factor XII deficiency in one (0.3%) of the patients.It is concluded that although hereditary platelet function defects constitute a large majority of women bleeders in India but among the coagulation defects, vWD is the commonest as reported from the caucasian population. It is thus suggested that in women presenting with menorrhagia, screening tests for haemostasis especially for vWD and inherited platelet function defects must be performed.

    Notes: Genetic studies were undertaken to reassess erucic acid heredity in Brassica juncea. Analysis of segregation in F2 and BC1 generations from two zero × high erucic acid crosses indicated that higher erucic acid in B. juncea was controlled by two dominant genes with additive effects, whereas segregation in a cross involving ‘CCWF 16′, a genotype having intermediate erucic acid (25.6%), and a zero erucic acid strain, indicated monogenic dominant control for intermediate erucic acid content. The B. juncea strain ‘CCWF 16’ was developed by hybridizing high-erucic acid B. juncea cv.‘WF-1’ with a ‘0’ erucic B. rapa cv.‘Candle’ followed by backcrossing with ‘WF-1’ and half-seed selection for low erucic acid in each backcross generation. This strategy resulted in substitution of the high erucic acid allele present in the A genome of B. juncea (AABB) by the zero erucic acid allele associated with ‘A’ genome of ‘Candle’. The intermediate erucic acid content in ‘CCWF 16’ was thus attributed to a gene present in the ‘BB’ genome. Experimental data clearly suggested that the gene (E2) associated with the A genome had a greater contribution to the total erucic acid content in B. juncea than the gene (E1) located on the B genome. This provided experimental evidence for a previous suggestion of unequal contributions of two dominant genes (E1= 12%, E2= 20%) to high erucic acid content in conventional digenomic Brassica species.

    Notes: The feasibility of building copper-based electrodes for electrical discharge machining (EDM) via laser cladding is investigated as an application of rapid prototyping (RP). Two material systems-Cu/W (with and without nickel) and Cu/B4C (with and without nickel) in certain compositions are selected for the experimental investigation. The laser claddings are realised via a 3000?W CO2 laser with suitable parameters. The micro-structures of the electrodes are analysed with a SEM. The performance of the EDM electrodes is examined in terms of machining rate and wear rate.
