    Notes: Energy modulation of nonrelativistic electrons with a laser beam using a metal microslit as an interaction circuit has been investigated. An optical near field is induced in the proximity of the microslit by illumination of the laser beam. The electrons passing close to the slit are accelerated or decelerated by an evanescent wave contained in the near field whose phase velocity is equal to the velocity of the electrons. The electron–evanescent wave interaction in the microslit has been analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The theory has predicted that electron energy can be modulated at optical frequencies. Experiments performed in the infrared region have verified theoretical predictions. The electron–energy changes of more than ±5 eV with a 10 kW CO2 laser pulse at the wavelength of 10.6 μm has been successfully observed for an electron beam with an energy of less than 80 keV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Spatial distributions of electron density ne, electron temperature Te, and wave field intensity in a planar microwave discharge at low pressures (10–100 mTorr) are measured with the discharge power as a parameter. Two different modes of electron heating are found: a bulk heating mode characterized with high Te(∼10 eV) in underdense plasma, and a surface heating mode with low Te(∼3 eV) in overdense plasma with a hot layer near the plasma-dielectric boundary. Abrupt transition between the two modes takes place near the cutoff density nc where the electron plasma frequency coincides with the discharge frequency (2.45 GHz). In the underdense case (ne〈nc), the microwave penetrates the bulk plasma and heats the majority of electrons confined in the dc ambipolar potential well, leading to high Te. In the overdense case (ne〉nc), the evanescent wave (surface wave) near the microwave window strongly heats the electrons in the boundary layer, which are transported to the bulk region and ionize the neutral particles to therein produce relatively cold electrons. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: ‘Ionic effects’ and ‘osmotic effects’ are major components of salt stress in plants. In this study these two parameters were clearly discriminated in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) using a modified cDNA-amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique. Soybean (cv. Lee) seedlings were exposed to iso-osmotic treatment consisting of 100 mm NaCl and 12% (w/v) polyethylene glycol 6000 for 24 h. The NaCl treatment fully activated salt tolerance as confirmed by the expression of the inositol-1-phosphate synthase gene. Then, gene expression in each sample was examined by cDNA-AFLP, and 140 differentially expressed cDNA fragments were obtained out of 13 000 amplicons. The percentage of transcripts dependent on ionic (NaCl-specific) and osmotic effects (common with NaCl and polyethylene glycol) could be evaluated for 44 and 40% of them, respectively. cDNA-AFLP also revealed the distribution of transcripts in shoots and roots. The ionic effect-dependent gene expression was more abundant in roots indicating that they showed a greater response to ionic stress than shoots. Several ion transporters, transcription factors and redox enzymes that were specific to the ionic effect may play important roles in the salt tolerance of soybean. The technical advantages of this modified cDNA-AFLP method are also discussed.

    Notes: Background  Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, and captopril, an inhibitor of angiotensin I-converting enzyme, are widely used for hyperuricaemia and hypertension, respectively. There have been reported cases showing that these two agents are effective for the treatment of granulomatous diseases such as sarcoidosis, although the mode of action is not elucidated.Objectives  We examined the in vitro effects of these agents on the formation of multinucleated giant cells (MGC) from human monocytes by concanavalin A-stimulated mononuclear cell supernatants (conditioned medium).Methods  We cultured monocytes with conditioned medium and each agent and compared the rate of MGC formation as well as the expression of adhesion molecules and P2X7 receptor, which are involved in MGC formation.Results  The addition of 25 or 100 μg mL−1 allopurinol or 0·125–1·0 μg mL−1 captopril inhibited MGC formation. Monocytes treated with these agents exhibited less expression of intercellular adhesion molecular-1 (ICAM-1) than untreated monocytes. The susceptibility of monocytes cultured in conditioned medium for 24 h to 2′-and 3′-o-(4-benzoyl-benzoyl)adenosine triphosphate-mediated cytolysis was significantly lower in monocytes treated with these agents than in untreated monocytes.Conclusions  Allopurinol and captopril have a therapeutic effect on granulomatous disorders by a direct action on monocyte/macrophage lineage cells partly through downregulation of ICAM-1 and P2X7 receptor.

    Notes: Abstract  We report on a 69-year-old woman with a solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst (solid ABC) in the left humerus with a pathological fracture. Radiographically, the lesion exhibited a relatively well-defined osteolytic lesion in the diaphysis of the left humerus. On magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the medullary lesion exhibited a homogeneous signal intensity isointense with surrounding normal muscles on the T1-weighted images and a mixture of low and high signal intensity on the T2-weighted images. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images revealed diffuse enhancement of the entire lesion. The pathological study showed a proliferation of fibroblasts, histiocytes, chronic inflammatory cells and numerous multinucleated giant cells in a collagenous matrix. Abundant osteoid formation in the matrix was observed, but the cells were devoid of nuclear atypia. Aneurysmal cystic cavities were absent. A review of the English literature found 22 cases of solid ABC of the long bones.

    Notes: Abstract  We report on a rare case of an intraosseous hemangioma involving the proximal tibia in a 70-year-old man. Radiographically, the lesion was a well-defined osteolytic lesion with marginal sclerosis. The CT images demonstrated a well-defined osteolytic lesion with partial cortical breakthrough. T1-weighted MR images showed a hypointense lesion, while T2-weighted images revealed hyperintense areas, with internal, hypointense septa. Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images showed lattice-like enhancement of the lesion.
