Notes: Venous leg ulcers derived from tissue destruction is the consequence of a chronic inflammatory process that produces pain and physical disability, diminishing quality of life in patients. In this work, Lassar ointment and lyophilized collagen-polyvinylpyrrolidone were administered separated each on one half in the same ulcer to 9 patients at the beginning and every 4 days. On day 16, all patients were auto-grafted with partial thickness skin. Granulation tissue and graft integration were assessed clinically during 3 months. Inflammatory infiltrate, type I and III collagens, elastic fibers, alkaline phosphatase as well as blood vessels were evaluated histologically or histochemically in biopsies taken at the beginning and 16 days after the local treatment.Clinically and morphologically, both treatments demonstrated appropriate granulation tissue promotion and optimal graft integration since the beginning. Nevertheless, in Lassar ointment treated group regionalization of alkaline phosphatase activity was observed, as well as the presence of granuloma in 2 of the 9 patients. In conclusion, Lassar ointment or lyophilized collagen-polyvinylpyrrolidone are two different promoters of granulation tissue in venous leg ulcers, however Lassar ointment has the capability to produce granuloma and an exacerbated immune response; in consequence, ulcer recidivism could be present, may be due to mineral deposits in the wound.

Notes: Abstract. Land requirements for Pinus halepensis Mill. growth were studied in thirty plots of a 40 year-old plantation in the semiarid Lower Ebro valley, northeast Spain, by comparing site index values to land characteristics. Site index at 40 years ranges from 4.1 m to 12.3 m. Moisture availability is the basic requirement for growth while nutrient availability has only a minor influence. Changes in moisture availability in the area are controlled by changes in soil rootable depth, with a minor effect of aspect. Soils developed on Tertiary gypsum rock are not suitable for afforestation with this species. Geomorphic and soil information may be combined, at various degrees of detail, to provide reliable estimates of Aleppo pine growth.

Notes: The biodegradation of mixtures of diapers crumbled with residuals of pruning of gardens in a cylindrical batch reactor with agitation was studied. The weight of diapers was varied among 15 to 47%, grass 31% and sawdust the rest. The reaction temperature increased from 20 to 64°C as a result of biologic activity and it diminished up to 25°C in 3 weeks. The source genesis of the batch leaching liquid began with a pH of 7 and to the third day it went down to 5.6 due to the hydrolisis of organic compounds. The nitrogen contents increased from 1% up to 2.1% after 28 days due to the loss of CO2. Sawdust concentrations no more than 20% were suitable for the biodegradation reaction. The variation of the content of organic matter in function of the time was described using a kinetics of first order and the reaction model solid-gas of waning nucleus until 30 days in which the chemical reaction controled. After this time a diffusion process seemed to be more important.

Notes: Development of active, stable and economical catalysts for oxidation of acrylic acid contained in industrial effluents is nowadays of great importance. Several manganese-based solids catalysts supported in Ce, Zr, Ti and Al oxides were prepared in our laboratory by incipient wetness impregnation for oxidation of acrylic acid in a batch high-pressure reactor at slurry conditions under 200°C and 15 bar of oxygen partial pressure. The Mn-Ce-O catalyst was the most active leading to high conversions (92.3%) in terms of total organic carbon (TOC) and total degradation of acrylic acid in the first 30 min of reaction. The TOC reductions were lower with Mn-Zr-O (45.6%), Mn-Ti-O (43.6%) and Mn-Al-O (28.2%) as well as acrylic acid was not completely degraded even after 180 min of reaction. The impregnation method used for catalyst preparation was compared with the co-precipitation procedure, being the last one less effective for TOC reduction (87.0%) although the same activity to oxidation of acrylic acid was observed. Acetic and formic acids were found as reaction intermediates being refractory compounds for the catalysts supported in Zr, Ti and Al. Catalyst stability was also evaluated and Mn-Ce-O prepared by impregnation showed low leaching of Mn to the liquid phase as well as carbon adsorption was not found strengthening the catalyst potentialities in the treatment of wastewaters containing acrylic acid. Since under non-catalytic conditions acrylic acid is refractory up to high temperatures (260°C), this work offers a step forward in the design of an economical catalyst able to promote acrylic acid oxidation in the liquid-phase at lower operating conditions than those used in non-catalytic systems.

Notes: Objective To investigate the dynamic trend of the nuchal translucency thickness between fetuses with normal and abnormal karyotype.Design Prospective observational study.Setting Ospedale Microcitemico, Cagliari, Italy.Population A cohort of 305 first trimester fetuses. Methods Fetuses with a nuchal translucency greater than or equal to the 95th centile were invited for a second nuchal translucency measurement. The finding of an ‘increased or unchanged’ or ‘diminished’ thickness was compared in fetuses with normal and abnormal karyotype.Main outcome measures Nuchal translucency and karyotype. Results Median maternal age was 35 years (min 17, max 44) and median crown–rump length at first visit was 50 mm (min 38, max 80). A second nuchal translucency measurement was carried out in 292 fetuses, resulting in increased or unchanged values in 95 cases and decreased nuchal translucency in 197 cases. Two hundred and twenty-six (77.4%) fetuses had normal karyotype and 66 (22.6%) had abnormal karyotype (44 trisomies 21, 10 trisomies 18, 5 trisomies 13, 4 cases of 45 X0, 1 case of 47,XXY, 1 case of 47,XXX and 1 translocation). In the 66 chromosomally abnormal fetuses, the second nuchal translucency measurement was enlarged or unchanged in 37 (56%), and diminished in 29 (44%), while in the 226 normal fetuses the second nuchal translucency measurement was enlarged or unchanged in 58 cases (25%) and diminished in 168 (75%) (relative risk 2.6, 95% confidence interval 1.7–4.0).Conclusion In fetuses with abnormal karyotype, the second nuchal translucency measurement tends to be increased or unchanged, while in normal cases the size of nuchal translucency is generally reduced.

Notes: Aims  Some researchers suggest that for some people, video game playing is an addictive behaviour similar to substance dependence. Our aim was to design and validate a scale to measure the problems associated with the apparently addictive use of all types of video games and video game systems, because there is no instrument at the present time that can be used for this purpose.Design  We reviewed the DSM-IV criteria for substance dependence and for pathological gambling, as well as the literature on the addictions in order to design a short scale (PVP; problem video game playing) that is quick and easy to apply.Participants  The scale was administered to 223 Spanish adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years. The study was carried out in Granada and Algeciras, Spain.Findings  Psychometric analyses show that the PVP seems to be unidimensional and has acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) at 0.69. The pattern of associations between the scale scores and alternative measures of problem play supports its construct validity (higher total scores in the scale were associated with higher frequency of play, mean and longest times per session, self and parents' perception of playing to excess, and scores in the Severity of Dependence Scale). Conclusions  Our results confirm that the excessive use of video games is associated with a number of problems which resemble a dependence syndrome, and the PVP appears as a useful instrument for the measurement of such problems.

Notes: The potential leishmanicidal activity of interleukin-15 (IL-15) was examined while priming with the cytokine phorbol-myristate-acetate (PMA)-activated macrophages and infecting them with Leishmania infantum parasites. The activation of macrophage cultures with IL-15 determined a significant anti-leishmanial activity, comparable with that induced by interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). The killing of Leishmania in macrophages primed with IL-15, as well as with IFN-γ, was followed by an increase in the IL-12 synthesis. The neutralization of IL-15 or IFN-γ, by specific monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) caused a significant reduction in leishmanicidal activity. Furthermore, in PMA-activated macrophages, the neutralization of IL-12 production by a specific anti-IL-12 MoAb reduced leishmanicidal activity induced by IL-15 and IFN-γ. Data indicate that IL-15 could have a role as an activator of leishmanicidal activity, directly or indirectly, by inducing IL-12 production.

Notes: Motion is a powerful cue for figure-ground segregation, allowing the recognition of shapes even if the luminance and texture characteristics of the stimulus and background are matched. In order to investigate the neural processes underlying early stages of the cue-invariant processing of form, we compared the responses of neurons in the striate cortex (V1) of anaesthetized marmosets to two types of moving stimuli: bars defined by differences in luminance, and bars defined solely by the coherent motion of random patterns that matched the texture and temporal modulation of the background. A population of form-cue-invariant (FCI) neurons was identified, which demonstrated similar tuning to the length of contours defined by first- and second-order cues. FCI neurons were relatively common in the supragranular layers (where they corresponded to 28% of the recorded units), but were absent from layer 4. Most had complex receptive fields, which were significantly larger than those of other V1 neurons. The majority of FCI neurons demonstrated end-inhibition in response to long first- and second-order bars, and were strongly direction selective. Thus, even at the level of V1 there are cells whose variations in response level appear to be determined by the shape and motion of the entire second-order object, rather than by its parts (i.e. the individual textural components). These results are compatible with the existence of an output channel from V1 to the ventral stream of extrastriate areas, which already encodes the basic building blocks of the image in an invariant manner.

Notes: An increase in central postsynaptic 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) function activates expression of activity-related cytoskeletal protein (Arc). Here, Arc expression was used to test whether, in rats, co-administration of a 5-HT re-uptake inhibitor (paroxetine) and a 5-HT1A receptor antagonist (WAY 100635) increases postsynaptic 5-HT function. After pre-treatment with WAY 100635 (0.3 mg/kg s.c.), paroxetine (5 mg/kg s.c.) caused a threefold increase in 5-HT in prefrontal cortex microdialysates. In situ hybridization studies found that neither paroxetine (5 mg/kg s.c.) nor WAY 1000635 (0.3 mg/kg s.c.) altered Arc mRNA abundance in any region examined. In contrast, paroxetine (5 mg/kg s.c.) increased Arc mRNA after pre-treatment with WAY 100635 (0.3 mg/kg s.c.). This increase was apparent in cortical regions (frontal, parietal and cingulate) and caudate nucleus but was absent in hippocampus (CA1). Increases in Arc mRNA were accompanied by an increase in c-fos mRNA. The increase in Arc expression induced by paroxetine/WAY 100635 was abolished by the 5-HT synthesis inhibitor, p-chlorophenylalanine (300 mg/kg i.p., daily for two days). In conclusion, paroxetine and WAY 100635 injected in combination (but not alone) caused a region-specific, 5-HT-mediated increase in Arc expression. These data provide molecular evidence that co-administration of a 5-HT re-uptake inhibitor and 5-HT1A receptor antagonist increases 5-HT function at the postsynaptic level.

Notes: Background:  Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is characterized by the co-existence of sebaceous gland tumors of the skin and internal malignancies. Currently, MTS is regarded as a variant of the hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer syndrome (HNPCC). Both MTS and HNPCC are secondary to germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes (mainly MSH-2 and MLH-1).Methods:  Cutaneous (eight sebaceous adenomas, one sebaceous carcinoma and one keratoacanthoma) and internal tumors (four colonic adenocarcinomas, two endometrial carcinomas, two transitional cell carcinomas of renal pelvis and ureter, one adenocarcinoma of the small bowel, one ovarian carcinoma and one colonic tubular adenoma) were obtained from six patients with MTS and were subjected to microsatellite instability (MI) analysis, and to immunostaining for MLH-1 and MSH-2. MI was assessed by evaluating three (CA)n dinucleotide repeats (D2S123, D5S346, D17S250) and the mononucleotide tracts BAT 26 and BAT 25.Results:  All cutaneous and internal tumors exhibited MI. An immunohistochemical concordance between all tumors within each single patient was obtained in five cases. In these five patients all tumors exhibited a lack of MSH-2 staining, consistent with a germline abnormality in this gene. In the one remaining case, the immunohistochemical staining in the sebaceous adenoma was negative for MLH-1 and positive for MSH-2, consistent with a germline alteration in MLH-1. However, the colonic adenocarcinoma in that patient showed positivity for MSH-2 and an equivocal positivity for MLH-1.Conclusions: The results confirm that tumors from patients with MTS exhibit MI. Moreover, immunostaining for MLH-1 and MSH-2 may be useful to identify the most probable gene responsible for the disease in each family.
