    Notes: The triggering and guiding of leader discharges using a plasma channel created by a sub-joule ultrashort laser pulse have been studied in a megavolt large-scale electrode configuration (3–7 m rod-plane air gap). By focusing the laser close to the positive rod electrode it has been possible, with a 400 mJ pulse, to trigger and guide leaders over distances of 3 m, to lower the leader inception voltage by 50%, and to increase the leader velocity by a factor of 10. The dynamics of the breakdown discharges with and without the laser pulse have been analyzed by means of a streak camera and of electric field and current probes. Numerical simulations have successfully reproduced many of the experimental results obtained with and without the presence of the laser plasma channel. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The theoretical basis describing Love waves propagating on a finite thickness substrate covered by a finite thickness solid layer having a lower shear acoustic speed is considered. A generalized dispersion equation is derived for shear horizontally polarized acoustic waves in this system. Two types of solutions to the dispersion equation, both satisfying stress free boundary conditions at the free surfaces, are shown to exist. The first type of solution has a displacement that decays with depth into the substrate while the second does not. Analytical approximations to the solutions for a thin solid guiding layer show that these solutions can be considered as generalizations of Love waves and resonant shear horizontally polarized acoustic plate modes (SH-APM), respectively. Numerical solutions to the dispersion equation are developed and the spectrum of modes for thick guiding layers is examined with particular reference to sensor applications. As expected, increasing the thickness of the guiding layer leads to multiple Love wave modes. However, each of these Love wave modes is found to possess a set of shear horizontally polarized acoustic plate modes. As the guiding layer thickness is increased, the Love wave speed decreases until at approximately νl/4f, where νl is the shear acoustic speed of the layer and f is the frequency, a sharp transition occurs in the Love wave speed from a value close to the shear acoustic speed of the substrate, νs, to one close to the shear acoustic speed of the layer, νl. A similar pattern is observed for the layer guided SH-APM's with an increase in the guiding layer thickness resulting in a sharp transition in the speed of the SH-APM towards a value close to that of the next lower SH-APM. It is shown that the appearance of the second Love wave mode is a result of a continuation of the lowest SH-APM associated with the previous Love wave mode. A physical interpretation is developed for the Love waves on the finite substrate and for the layer guided SH-APM's and from this interpretation it is suggested that layer guided SH-APM sensors could provide significantly enhanced mass sensitivity. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The propagation of solitons in transmission lines periodically loaded with nonlinear capacitors is analyzed. It is demonstrated that the dependence of soliton amplitude on propagating velocity can be computed with a simple equation, valid for any arbitrary nonlinear capacitance. By means of an approximation to the nonlinear reactance, an analytical expression that completely describes soliton profiles is presented. This can be applied to obtain moderate to high-amplitude soliton wave forms in nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) loaded with heterostrucure barrier varactors, where standard approaches do not hold. This model can be of help in understanding harmonic generation in the terahertz range using monolithic NLTLs as frequency multipliers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Salt Restriction and QT Prolongation. Introduction: Salt restriction results in endogenous sympathetic activation, and we previously showed that plasma concentrations of quinidine measured after oral drug administration are increased during a low-salt diet. However, it is not known whether, independent of effects on plasma concentration, the extent to which quinidine prolongs the QT interval also is modulated by changes in endogenous sympathetic activity. Methods and Results: In these studies, we evaluated quinidine concentration-QT relations during low-salt (10 mEq/day for 8 days) and high-salt (400 mEq/day for 8 days) diets, with or without beta blockade in normal volunteers. In the absence of beta blockade, the concentration producing a fixed (15%) increase in QTc was significantly lower with salt restriction: 1.2 ± 0.4 μg/mL (low salt) versus 2.2 ± 0.4 μg/mL (high salt) (P 〈 0.01). With beta blockade, this difference was abolished: 1.9 ± 0.3 μg/mL (low salt + beta blockade) versus 2.1 ± 0.3 μg/mL (high salt + beta blockade). QT morphologic abnormalities including bifid T waves and U waves were abolished with beta-adrenergic blockade. Conclusion: Sympathetic activation by a low-salt diet not only modulates drug disposition but also increases sensitivity to drug-induced QT prolongation.

    Notes: Abstract. Remediation techniques for soil pollution have been studied in the aftermath of a tailing spill from a pyrite-mine holding pond in Aznalcóllar (southwest Spain). Given the extent of the accident and the characteristics of the affected area, we conclude that, after the removal of the tailings, the only feasible remediation measure involves chemical immobilization of the pollutants. The best treatment tested proved to be liming in combination with amendment materials such as soils rich in iron oxides and clay. Monitoring for 3 years has demonstrated that the system is effective for reducing the solubility of the most mobile forms of the main pollutant elements, although further monitoring is recommended.

    Notes: The retention walls in a pond containing the residues from the pyrite mine of Aznalcóllar (southern Spain) broke open on 25 April 1998, spilling approximately 6 × 106 m3 of polluted water and toxic tailings, which affected some 55 km2. Drying and aeration of the tailings resulted in oxidation, forming an acidic solution with high pollutant contents, the effects of which were studied in a calcareous soil. The infiltration of this solution markedly affected only the first 12 mm of the soil, where strong acidification caused the weathering of the carbonates, and where the fine mineral particles were hydrolysed. The SO42− ions in the acidic solution precipitated almost entirely at this depth, forming gypsum, hydroxysulphates and complex sulphates. The Fe3+ ions also precipitated there, mainly in amorphous or poorly crystallized forms, adsorbing to As, Sb, Tl and Pb dissolved in the acidic solution. The Al3+ ions, though partly precipitating in the acidic layer, accumulated mostly where the soil pH exceeded 5.5 (12–14 mm in depth). They did so primarily as amorphous or poorly crystallized forms, adsorbing to Cu dissolved in the acidic solution. The Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions accumulated mainly at pH 〉 7.0 (19–21 mm in depth), being adsorbed chiefly by clay mineral. After 15 months, only the first 20 mm of the soil were acidified by the oxidation of the tailings and most of the pollutants did not penetrate deeper than 100 mm. Consequently, the speed of the cleanup of the toxic spill is not as important as a thorough removal of tailings together with the upper 10 cm of the soil.

    Notes: We prepared high epitaxial thin films of the compound Sr2FeMoO6 with narrow rocking curves by pulsed laser deposition. The diagonal and nondiagonal elements of the resistivity tensor were investigated at temperatures from 4 K up to room temperature in magnetic fields up to 8 T. An electronlike ordinary Hall effect and a holelike anomalous Hall contribution are observed. Both coefficients have reversed sign compared to the colossal magnetoresistive manganites. We found at 300 K an ordinary Hall coefficent of −1.87×10−10 m3/A s, corresponding to a nominal charge carrier density of four electrons per formula unit. At low temperature only a small negative magnetoresistance is observed which vanishes at higher temperatures. The temperature coefficient of the resistivity is negative over the whole temperature range. A Kondo like behavior is observed below 30 K while above 100 K variable range hopping like transport occurs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this work, we report an investigation of polymer overlayer thickness in a Love wave device working at a fundamental frequency of 110 MHz and at the 330 MHz harmonic. At both frequencies, we observe the initial reduction in insertion loss associated with a Love wave device. Significantly, we also observe a series of resonant conditions as the layer thickness is further increased. The separation of these resonances is attributed to an increase in thickness of half of the acoustic wavelength in the polymer. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: From a coupling model between the Boltzmann transport equation and the quantum Liouville equation, we have developed a simulator based on the Wigner distribution function (WDF) approach that can be applied to resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) and other vertical transport quantum devices. In comparison to previous WDF simulators, the tool allows one to extend the simulation domains up to hundreds of nanometers, which are the typical dimensions required for the study of actual multilayer structures. With these improvements, a level of agreement between theory and experiment comparable to that obtained by using other simulators based on Green functions has been achieved. The results of this work reveal that the WDF formalism can be alternatively used to study the behavior of actual multilayered RTDs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
