    Notes: We report on temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements and secondary ion mass spectroscopy on unintentionally doped, n-type conducting GaN epitaxial films. Over a wide range of free carrier concentrations we find a good correlation between the Hall measurements and the atomic oxygen concentration. We observe an increase of the oxygen concentration close to the interface between the film and the sapphire substrate, which is typical for the growth technique used (synthesis from galliumtrichloride and ammonia). It produces a degenerate n-type layer of (approximate)1.5 μm thickness and results in a temperature-independent mobility and Hall concentration at low temperatures (〈50 K). The gradient in free carrier concentration can also be seen in spatially resolved Raman and cathodoluminescence experiments. Based on the temperature dependence of the Hall-effect, Fourier transform infrared absorption experiments, and photoluminescence we come to the conclusion that oxygen produces a shallow donor level with a binding energy comparable to the shallow Si donor. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Impact of Biphasic Electrical Cardioversion of Atrial Fibrillation on Early Recurrent Atrial Fibrillation and Shock Efficacy (2004)

    Notes: Introduction: Early recurrent atrial fibrillation (ERAF) after external cardioversion of atrial fibrillation (AF) occurs in 12% to 26% of patients. Whether biphasic cardioversion has an impact on the incidence of ERAF after cardioversion of AF is unclear. Methods and Results: Consecutive patients (n = 216, mean age 66 years, 71% male, 88% with structural cardiovascular disease or hypertension) underwent cardioversion with a biphasic (Bi) or monophasic (Mo) shock waveform in randomized fashion. Energies used were 120-150-200-200 Ws (Bi) or 200-300-360-360 Ws (Mo). The two study groups (Bi vs Mo) did not differ with regard to age, sex, body mass index, underlying cardiovascular disease, left atrial diameter, left ventricular ejection fraction, duration of AF fibrillation, and antiarrhythmic drug therapy. Mean delivered energy was significantly lower in the Bi group (Bi: 186 ± 143 Ws vs Mo: 324 ± 227 Ws; P 〈 0.001). Overall incidence of ERAF (AF relapse within 1 minute after successful cardioversion) was 8.9% and showed no difference between the two groups (Bi: 8.1% vs Mo: 9.7%, P = NS). Cardioversion was successful in 95.4% of patients. The success rate was comparable in both groups (Bi: 94.3% vs Mo 96.8%; P = NS). First shock efficacy did not differ between Bi and Mo (76.4% vs 67.7%; P = NS). Mean number of shocks were 1.4 shocks per patient in both groups. Conclusion: Biphasic cardioversion allows comparable success rates with significantly lower energies. However, the incidence of ERAF is not influenced by biphasic cardioversion. With the energies used, biphasic and monophasic shock waveforms are comparable with regard to first shock and cmulative shock efficacy.

    Notes: The pathway involved in UTP-evoked noradrenaline release was investigated in cultures of rat superior cervical ganglia. Northern blots revealed an age-related increase in levels of mRNA for P2Y6 receptors in cultures obtained at postnatal days 1 and 5, respectively, but no change in transcripts for P2Y1 and P2Y2. Likewise, UTP-evoked overflow of previously incorporated [3H]noradrenaline was six-fold higher in neurons obtained at postanatal day 5. Various protein kinase C inhibitors diminished UTP-, but not electrically, induced tritium overflow by 〉 70%, as did down-regulation of protein kinase C by 24 h exposure to phorbol ester. β-Phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate and dioctanoylglycerol caused concentration-dependent increases in [3H] outflow of up to 6% of total radioactivity, and the secretagogue actions of these agents were reduced in the presence of protein kinase C inhibitors and in neurons pretreated with phorbol ester. Overflow evoked by dioctanoylglycerol was attenuated in the absence of extracellular Ca2+ and in the presence of tetrodotoxin or Cd2+. In addition to triggering tritium overflow, UTP reduced currents through muscarinic K+ channels which, however, were not affected by phorbol esters. This action of UTP was not altered by protein kinase C inhibitors. These results indicate that P2Y6 receptors mediate UTP-evoked noradrenaline release from rat sympathetic neurons via activation of protein kinase C, but not inhibition of KM channels.

    Notes: The solutions of traveltime inversion problems are often not unique because of the poor match between the raypath distribution and the tomographic grid. However, by adapting the local resolution iteratively, by means of a singular value analysis of the tomographic matrix, we can reduce or eliminate the null space influence on our earth image: in this way, we get a much more reliable estimate of the velocity field of seismic waves. We describe an algorithm for an automatic regridding, able to fit the local resolution to the available raypaths, which is based on Delaunay triangulation and Voronoi tessellation. It increases the local pixel density where the null space energy is low or the velocity gradient is large, and reduces it elsewhere. Consequently, the tomographic image can reveal the boundaries of complex objects, but is not affected by the ambiguities that occur when the grid resolution is not adequately supported by the available raypaths.

    Notes: Lymphoedema is an unusual extra-articular feature of rheumatoid arthritis and has rarely been described in psoriatic arthritis. We report a 41-year-old man with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis who developed bilateral lymphoedema of the upper extremities. Lymphoscintigraphy showed absent lymphatic drainage in the right arm and a subnormal increase in lymphatic flow under manual exertion in both arms. Colour Doppler ultrasound studies did not reveal venous or arterial abnormalities. Conservative management and therapy with cyclosporin (for worsening arthritis) resulted in partial resolution of the lymphoedema and improvement of flow parameters on the right side upon repeat lymphoscintigraphy.

    Notes: This paper derives a general explicit sequential asset price process for an economy with overlapping generations of consumers. They maximize expected utility with respect to subjective transition probabilities given by Markov kernels. The process is determined primarily by the interaction of exogenous random dividends and the characteristics of consumers, given by arbitrary preferences and expectations, yielding an explicit random dynamical system with expectations feedback. The paper studies asset prices and equity premia for a parametrized class of examples with CARA utilities and exponential distributions. It provides a complete analysis of the role of risk aversion and of subjective as well as rational beliefs.
