    Notes: The leading terms of the magnetic field spectrum for the Helically Symmetric Experiment [Fusion Technol. 27, 273 (1995)] at low magnetic field are determined by analyzing the orbits of passing particles. The images produced by the intersection of electron orbits with a fluorescent mesh are recorded with a charge coupled device and transformed into magnetic coordinates using a neural network. To obtain the spectral components, the transformed orbits are then fit to an analytic expression that models the drift orbits of the electrons. The results confirm for the first time that quasihelical stellarators have a large effective transform that results in small excursions of particles from a magnetic surface. The drift orbits are also consistent with a very small toroidal curvature component in the spectrum. An external magnetic perturbation, nearly resonant with the transform, is shown to induce a large excursion of the particle orbit off a flux surface. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Edge-localized fast magnetoacoustic eigenmodes (FME) may be responsible for the observed superthermal ion cyclotron emission in recent deuterium/deuterium (DD) and deuterium/tritium (DT) experiments. These modes can be driven unstable by resonant interaction with a small population of energetic ions (e.g., fusion alphas), having an anisotropic distribution in velocity space, provided that the mode frequency is close to the ion cyclotron frequency. In the present paper, the radial and poloidal structure of these eigenmodes is analyzed, by solving the two-dimensional (2D) eigenmode equation both numerically and analytically using a variational approach. In particular, the conditions for the mode localization and the dependence of the mode structure on aspect ratio and ellipticity are investigated. The eigenmode is found to be radially localized near the plasma edge. In a tokamak with finite aspect ratio, the mode is localized also poloidally near the outer midplane edge. The existence of localized solutions for both sign of the poloidal mode number is found to be sensitive to the ellipticity, the magnitude of parallel wave number and the plasma density profile. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a neoplasm of helper T cells whose first manifestations usually appear in the skin. The various forms of CTCL are distinguished by both clinical features and histopathology. Early on, the diagnosis may be difficult to establish because of its numerous, and often non-specific, clinical presentations. Further, the pathological findings of early lesions may lack the diagnostic features observed in well-developed or advanced disease. The diagnosis of CTCL must be considered in any patient with a chronic, therapy-resistant condition of the skin. In patients with non-specific histological findings, a high index of suspicion and multiple biopsies may eventually lead to a diagnosis of CTCL. Once the diagnosis of CTCL is established, accurate staging is essential both for its effect on treatment decisions and for its prognostic value. In general, CTCL is a chronic, slowly progressive disease with a long evolution. The development of tumours is a poor prognostic sign, as is erythroderma. The Sezary syndrome is a distinct form of erythrodermic CTCL that is characterized by exfoliative erythroderma, lymphadenopathy, lymphocytosis, intense pruritus, and circulating large, abnormal lymphocytes (Sezary cells). When death does occur, it is most often due to septicemia. Treatment of CTCL must be tailored to the individual patient. The most commonly employed treatment options are photochemotherapy and topical chemotherapy.

    Notes: A recombinant form of Yersinia pestis YopM with a C-terminal polyhistidine affinity tag has been overproduced in Escherichia coli, purified to homogeneity and crystallized using the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion technique. Several different crystal forms were obtained. The most suitable crystals for X-ray diffraction belonged to space groups P4222 (unit-cell parameters a = 109.36, b = 109.36, c = 101.50 Å) and C2221 (unit-cell parameters a = 71.73, b = 121.85, c = 189.79 Å). With a synchrotron-radiation source, these crystals diffracted to 2.4 and 1.9 Å resolution, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that penetration of relativistically intense laser light into an overdense plasma, accessible by self-induced transparency, occurs over a finite length only. The penetration length depends crucially on the overdense plasma parameter and increases with increasing incident intensity after exceeding the threshold for self-induced transparency. Exact analytical solutions describing the plasma-field distributions are presented.

    Notes: Abstract Stable transformation of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) at a high frequency has been obtained by particle bombardment of embryogenic cell suspension cultures. Transient and stable expression of the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene was monitored in cell suspension cultures. Transient expression, measured 48 h after bombardment, was abundant, and stable expression was observed in over 4% of the transiently expressing cells. The high efficiency of stable expression is due to the multiple bombardment of rapidly dividing cell suspension cultures and the selection for transformed cells by gradually increasing the concentrations of the antibiotic Geneticin (G418). Southern analysis indicated a minimum transgene copy number of one to four in randomly selected plants. Fertile plants were obtained from transformed cell cultures less than 3 months old. However, transgenic and control plants from cell cultures older than 6 months produced plants with abnormal morphology and a high degree of sterility.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose:Primary objective was to determine response rate ofpatients with advanced pancreatic cancer to a novel lipoxygenase andthromboxane A2 synthetase inhibitor (CV6504); secondary objectives includedestimation of pharmacokinetics of CV6504, target-enzyme inhibition, safety andtolerance, quality of life and survival. Patients and methods:Thirty-one patients with advanced pancreaticcancer were planned to receive CV6504, 100 mg TDS, orally for three months,at which point CT scans were performed to assess therapeutic response rates.Steady state concentrations of CV6504 and thromboxane B2 (an indirect measureof thromboxane A2 synthetase (TA2S) inhibition) were made. Of the31 patients entered into the study, 23 were considered fully evaluable forresponse. Results:The drug was well tolerated with few side effects; nopartial or complete responses were seen, but 10 patients had stable diseaseat 3 months; quality of life was maintained during therapy; mean CV6504 steadystate plasma concentrations of 14 ± 6 ng/ml resulting in 75 ±18% inhibition of TA2S were achieved; median-survival timefor all patients considered eligible for assessment of efficacy was 36.6 weeksafter the initial dose of study medication. The actuarial one-year survivalwas approximately 25%. Conclusion:CV6504 inhibits its target enzyme in vivo,maintains stable disease in 32% of evaluable patients and is welltolerated.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal neutron capture prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) was used to determine mass fractions of H, B, C, N, Na, Cl, K, and S in 2 meat homogenates. Twelve units of candidate Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1546 Meat Homogenate produced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) were analyzed to provide NIST with certification data. This SRM is a realistic processed food matrix, ideal for food analysis programs such as the Food and Drug Administration's Total Diet Study. Another meat homogenate, Certified Reference Material LGC 7002 Pork/Chicken (along with NIST SRMs 1549 Non-Fat Milk Powder and 1571 Orchard Leaves) was analyzed for quality control. Candidate SRM 1546 unit-to-unit heterogeneity was 〈2% for H, Na, Cl, and K, and 3.5% for N and within-unit heterogeneity was 〈2% for H, N, Cl, and K, and 2.9% for Na, similar to LGC 7002 homogeneity results. Control material mass fractions agreed well with certificate and consensus values. Protein mass fractions, calculated from N results, were 15.2% and 11.9% for candidate SRM 1546 and LGC 7002, respectively. Protein content calculated for SRM 1549 (36.0%) agreed well with known values for dried non-fat milk powder.
