Notes: : A considerable amount of squid mantle collagen, 45% to 70% of total collagen, was not solubilized even after 30 min of heating in boiling water with its fibrous structure left intact. Pyridinoline, one of the major intermo-lecular crosslinks in matured collagen, was more predominantly included in the insoluble collagen than in the soluble one (p 〈 0.05). These results suggest that pyridinoline is closely related to the heat solubility of squid collagen.

Notes: We report on photoluminescence (PL) experiments in CdS nanocrystals fabricated by sequential ion implantation in Al2O3 matrices. The PL spectrum and the spatial image of the PL intensity have been studied at 8 K using a scanning near-field optical microscope. The PL spectrum at each bright spot has been found to consist of narrow lines of various energies, although the spectrum measured by conventional optics shows a single and broad band locating below the free-exciton absorption energy. The origin of the sharp PL lines in CdS nanocrystals will be discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Mullite–boron nitride (BN) composite with high strength, low Young's modulus, and highly improved strain tolerance was prepared by reactive hot pressing (RHP) using aluminum borates (9Al2O3·2B2O3 and 2Al2O3·B2O3) and silicon nitride as starting materials. Compared with the monolithic mullite, the composite RHPed at 1800°C showed 1.64 times (540 MPa) the strength, 70% (153 GPa) the Young's modulus, and 2.34 times (3.53 × 10−3) the strain tolerance. Transmission electron microscopy observation revealed that the composite had an isotropic microstructure with a fine mullite matrix grain size of less than 1 μm and nanosized hexagonal BN (h-BN) platelets of about 200 nm in length and 60–80 nm in thickness. The high strength was suggested to be from the reduced matrix grain size and the small toughening effect by the h-BN platelets.

Notes: Background  Inorganic arsenic is an environmental contaminant and is associated with the increased risk of human skin cancer. Arsenic has been reported to activate or inhibit a variety of cellular signalling pathways which has effects on cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. However, the molecular mechanisms of these arsenic-induced biological effects are not completely understood. Objectives  To understand the molecular basis for the mode of action of arsenicals, we examined the effect of arsenite and arsenate on the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) and the upstream signalling cascade in normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK).Methods  NHEK were exposed to arsenite or arsenate. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2, c-jun N-terminal kinases (JNK), p38, and MAPK or ERK kinases (MEK) 1/2. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine phosphorylation and recruitment of its adaptor proteins, Shc and Grb2, to EGFR were detected by immunoprecipitation and Western blot analysis. Results  Both arsenicals activated ERK1/2, which are most highly activated in response to mitogenic stimulation, in addition to JNK and p38, which show greater activation in response to cellular stresses. The kinetics of ERK1/2 activation differed from those of JNK and p38 activation. Both arsenicals transiently activated ERK1/2 prior to JNK and p38 activation. MEK1/2, upstream kinases of ERK1/2, were also activated by arsenicals with similar time kinetics to that of ERK1/2 activation. To investigate a signalling pathway leading to activation of MEK1/2–ERK1/2, we examined the tyrosine phosphorylation of EGFR and Shc adapter protein. Both arsenicals stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation of EGFR and Shc. After arsenical treatment, Shc immunoprecipitates contained coprecipitated EGFR and Grb2, suggesting that both arsenicals induce the assembly of EGFR–Shc–Grb2 complexes. Both the EGFR inhibitor tyrphostin AG1478 and anti-EGFR blocking antibody markedly attenuated ERK1/2 activation induced by arsenicals, but did not affect JNK and p38 activation. Conclusions  Our data indicate that both arsenite and arsenate activate the EGFR–Shc–Grb2–MEK1/2–ERK1/2 signalling cascade in NHEK.

Notes: A fluorescent dye, Evans blue (EB), was injected into the following seven drinking-associated muscles of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica: the sternohyoid, third branchial, fourth branchial, opercular, pharyngeal, upper oesophageal sphincter and oesophageal body muscles. The sternohyoid muscle promotes ‘ingestion’, and the remaining muscles contribute to ‘swallowing’. All neurones stained by EB were located ipsilaterally in the caudal medulla oblongata (MO) of the Japanese eel. Neurones projecting into the sternohyoid muscle were identified as those in the spino-occipital motor nucleus (NSO), and neurones projecting into the remaining muscles as those in the glossopharyngeal–vagal motor complex (GVC). Within the GVC, the neuronal arrangement was topological, and hence, ‘swallowing’ will be completed if the GVC neurones ‘fire’ progressively from rostral to caudal. These neurones in the NSO and GVC may use acetylcholine (ACh) as a neurotransmitter, as the EB-positive neurones in both nuclei were immunoreactive against anticholine acetyltransferase (anti-ChAT) antibody. Besides the MO, some somata in a ganglion of the vagal nerve were also stained by EB injected into the pharyngeal, the upper oesophageal sphincter and the oesophageal body muscles. The localization and the shape of the somata suggest that they are sensory neurones. These sensory neurones were not ChAT-immunoreactive. Combining these results, based on a model for ‘swallowing’ in mammals, a plausible model for central organization of ‘drinking’ in the Japanese eel is proposed, which suggests that ‘drinking’ in the fishes is regulated by the neuronal circuit for ‘swallowing’ in mammals.

Notes: Abstract  We reviewed 27 cementless primary total hip replacements in patients with osteoarthrosis secondary to congenital dysplasia of the hip. Autogenous bone grafting was used as augmentation. On average the follow-up period was 9 years. Two hips were revised and three acetabular components were considered loose. In hips with loose cups the average graft coverage was significantly greater than in stable hips. The use of a cementless acetabular component is encouraging for reconstruction, although extensive grafting should be avoided. Our study suggests that cementless reconstruction in dysplastic hips yields a satisfactory outcome.

Notes: The formula of the pseudo-Voigt function expressed by a weighted sum of Gaussian and Lorentzian functions is extended by adding two other types of peak functions in order to improve the accuracy when approximating the Voigt profile. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) values and mixing parameters of the Gaussian, the Lorentzian and the other two component functions in the extended formula can be approximated by polynomials of a parameter ρ = ΓL/(ΓG + ΓL), where ΓG and ΓL are the FWHM values of the deconvoluted Gaussian and Lorentzian functions, respectively. The maximum deviation of the extended pseudo-Voigt function from the Voigt profile is within 0.12% relative to the peak height when sixth-order polynomial expansions are used. The systematic errors of the integrated intensity ΓG and ΓL, estimated by fitting the extended formula to Voigt profiles, are typically less than 1/10 of the errors arising from the application of the original formula of the pseudo-Voigt approximation proposed by Thompson et al. [J. Appl. Cryst. (1987), 20, 79–83], while the time required for computation of the extended formula is only about 2.5 relative to the computation time required for the original formula.

Notes: Abstract Treatment of a mallet finger due to an intra-articular fracture of the distal phalanx involving one-third or more of the articular surface is controversial. Thirty-three digits with such fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with Kirschner wires. Of these ¶33 fractures, 13 were associated with subluxation of the distal phalanx. After an average follow-up period of ¶29 months, the average loss of extension of the distal phalanx was 4 °, and the average flexion of the distal interphalangeal joint was 67 °. Radiographs of the distal joint in 27 digits appeared normal, while in the remaining ¶6 digits, slight degenerative changes were noted. In one there was a minor surgical complication. By using the operative technique described, a congruous reduction of the inta-articular fracture and satisfactory function were achieved.
