    Notes: We have investigated the emission properties of low-growth-rate InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum-dot multilayer samples with spacer layers of different thicknesses. For two layers with the same InAs coverage and a spacer of 40 nm, emission from the two layers is shown to be at different wavelengths. This is discussed in terms of local strain and surface undulation caused by the first layer influencing the growth of the second layer. We show that by annealing the surface before the growth of each subsequent layer this effect can be avoided for spacers of 40 nm and above. Furthermore, it is shown by collecting photoluminescence over a limited area of an N-layer sample, grown with surface annealing, that this sample exhibits a maximum modal gain N times that of a single layer. For spacers below 10 nm, only one emission peak is observed. However, we show that the observation of a single peak is due, in this case, to tunneling between adjacent layers, and that the maximum modal gain at 1300 nm of such electronically coupled layers is comparable to that of a single layer. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Highly ordered hexagonal arrays of parallel metallic nanowires (Ni, Bi) with diameters of about 50 nm and lengths up to 50 μm were synthesized by electrodeposition. Hexagonal-close-packed nanochannel anodized aluminum oxide film was used as the deposition template. The deposition was performed in an organic bath of dimethylsulfoxide with metal chloride as the electrolyte. A high degree of ordering and uniformity in these arrays can be obtained with this technique by fine-tuning the electrodeposition parameters. Moreover, an unprecedentedly high level of uniformity and control of the wire length was achieved. The arrays are unique platforms for explorations of collective behavior in coupled mesoscopic systems, and are useful for applications in high-density data storage, field emission displays, and sensors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Sensory cues from male rats, such as odours and vaginal-cervical stimulation (VCS), play a modulatory role in female rat sexual behaviour. For example, exposure to male odours and VCS appears to be at least partially responsible for increases in sexual behaviour following repeated mating of oestradiol-primed female rats. Although there is evidence that VCS influences sexual behaviour via a ligand-independent progestin receptor (PR)-dependent mechanism, the mechanism by which odours influence sexual behaviour is not known. We tested the hypothesis that, similar to VCS, the effects of male odours on sexual behaviour are mediated by progestin receptors. Female rats were injected with the progestin antagonist, RU486, or oil vehicle and were then exposed to male-soiled bedding or clean bedding. Although exposure to male-soiled bedding resulted in higher levels of Fos immunoreactivity in brain areas associated with female sexual behaviour, the progestin antagonist did not reduce this effect. Furthermore, there was minimal coexpression of odour-induced Fos and progestin receptors in brain areas associated with female sexual behaviour. Together, these results suggest that the effects of male odours are not mediated by a PR-dependent mechanism. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that oestrogen receptor (ER)-containing cells are involved in the effects of olfactory cues. Although there was virtually no coexpression of ERβ and odour-induced Fos in brain areas associated with female sexual behaviour, exposure to male odours slightly increased the number of cells coexpressing ERα and odour-induced Fos in the posterodorsal medial amygdala. Although, these results do not support the hypothesis that the effects of odours are mediated by a PR-dependent mechanism, they suggest that integration of male odours and hormonal cues may occur in ERα-containing cells in the posterodorsal medial amygdala.

    Notes: Adalimumab, a fully human-derived recombinant monoclonal antibody against tumour necrosis factor-α, has been shown to be effective for the treatment of patients with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis. We report two patients with long-standing recalcitrant psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis who, after multiple treatment failures with conventional and experimental antipsoriatic medications, both responded to treatment with adalimumab. Significant clinical improvement was noted in both skin and joint disease in the two patients after several weeks of treatment with adalimumab. We are unaware of previous published reports of adalimumab therapy in patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

    Notes: Abstract The spectral absorption characteristics of the retinal photoreceptors of the blue tit (Parus caeruleus) and blackbird (Turdus merula) were investigated using microspectrophotometry. The retinae of both species contained rods, double cones and four spectrally distinct types of single cone. Whilst the visual pigments and cone oil droplets in the other receptor types are very similar in both species, the wavelength of maximum sensitivity (λmax) of long-wavelength-sensitive single and double cone visual pigment occurs at a shorter wavelength (557 nm) in the blackbird than in the blue tit (563 nm). Oil droplets located in the long-wavelength-sensitivesingle cones of both species cut off wavelengths below 570–573 nm, theoretically shifting cone peak spectral sensitivity some 40 nm towards the long-wavelength end of the spectrum. This raises the possibility that the precise λmax of the long-wavelength-sensitive visual pigment is optimised for the visual function of the double cones. The distribution of cone photoreceptors across the retina, determined using conventional light and fluorescence microscopy, also varies between the two species and may reflect differences in their visual ecology.

    Notes: Abstract  Video playback potentially allows the presentation, manipulation, and replication of realistic moving visual stimuli, in a way that is impossible with real animals or static dummies, and difficult even with mechanical models. However, there are special problems attached to the use of this technology; this article concentrates on the problem of accurate colour rendition. Video and television simulate the colour of objects rather than reproduce the spectrum of light that they naturally emit, transmit, or reflect. This simulation is achieved by using relatively narrow waveband light to stimulate the cone cells in the retina in a similar pattern to that produced by the natural object. However, species differ in the spectral tuning of their photoreceptors, so a faithful colour rendition for a human is unlikely to be achieved for another species. This problem is discussed with special reference to birds, a taxon renown for its colourfulness and frequent use in behavioural experiments but which has a very different colour vision from that of humans. We stress that the major pitfalls that can arise when using video playback with avian subjects can also occur in ’normal’ behavioural experiments. However, the problems of faithful colour rendition are particularly severe with video, and the major benefits that the technology brings will only be realised under a limited range of circumstances, with careful validation experiments.

    Notes: Abstract New laparoscopic techniques have revolutionized the practice of surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become one of the most commonly performed surgeries worldwide. Although shorter hospital stays and patient comfort have offered clear advantages over open cholecystectomy, the technique has resulted in several specific complications, including bile duct injury and gallbladder perforation. Although rarely clinically significant, intraperitoneal gallstone spillage can cause abscess formation and adhesions. Although these patients can present with a confusing clinical picture, their characteristic radiologic features should be recognized. We present two cases of complicated intraperitoneal gallstone spillage radiologically diagnosed and treated with laparoscopic and interventional radiologic techniques.
