Notes: : The antilisterial effect of low-fat sausages (〈2%) manufactured with a fat replacer and increased level of sodium lactate (SL, 60%) solution was determined during refrigerated storage after inoculation with 103 colony-forming units/g of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) at the initial storage. The fat replacer prevented moisture loss during cooking or storage. Increased SL in combination with the fat replacer resulted in lower water activity, total plate, and LM counts. In addition, whiteness values decreased (P 〈 0.05), but yellowness values increased (P 〈 0.05) with increased SL level. During storage, low-fat sausages containing at least 3.3% SL and the fat replacer had greater antilisterial effect than the low-fat control.

Notes: Discusses a virtual prototyping (VP) system developed for simulation of rapid prototyping processes. It enables a designer to visualise and optimise an RP process with a set of process parameters. The visualisation of a virtually simulated part prior to physical fabrication helps reduce unwanted prototyping iterations. The implementation techniques involved in the development of the VP system and the considerations in selecting virtual reality interfaces are described. The visualisation capability of the system is demonstrated by comparing virtual parts with the corresponding physical prototypes.

Notes: This paper proposes a tolerant slicing algorithm for processing slice contours for Layered Manufacturing (LM). The algorithm aims to overcome the constraints of computer memory and the computation instability commonly inherent in conventional slicing methodologies. It minimizes memory usage by adopting a pick-and-drop approach, which extracts one facet for slicing from the Stereolithography (STL) file at a time. The facets that intersect with the cutting plane are read in, sliced and then disposed of from the memory one by one for subsequent construction of slice contours. Only the slice data and the associated topological information of the current layer are temporarily stored in the memory. This approach greatly reduces the amount of computer memory required and it involves much less computationally intensive searching operations. Thus, STL models of virtually unlimited file size can be sliced to facilitate the LM processes. The algorithm is also relatively fault-tolerant in that common defects of STL models may be tolerated and the resultant inconsistent contours are effectively repaired.

Notes: This paper proposes an algorithm that constructs the topological hierarchy relationship of complex slice contours for layered manufacturing (LM). It facilitates toolpath generation for fabrication of multi-material parts and virtual simulation for defect quantification and process optimization of LM. The algorithm consists of two main modules, namely the hierarchy-sorting module and contour-sequencing module. The hierarchy-sorting module builds a parent-and-child list that defines the containment relationship of the slice contours, while the contour-sequencing module arranges the slice contours in an appropriate sequence based on the user's requirements. Topological hierarchy relationship facilitates toolpath planning for multi-material LM and also alleviates some major graphics problems in the virtual simulation of LM.

Notes: This paper proposes a dexel-based virtual prototyping system, which builds a virtual prototype with dexels or rectangular strips of solid. The approach resembles the physical fabrication process of most powder-based rapid prototyping (RP) systems. It simulates an RP process to create a virtual prototype. Colour virtual prototypes may also be fabricated relatively easily. Thus, the designer can perform design validation and accuracy analysis easily in a virtual environment as if using a physical prototype. In addition to numeric quantification of the RP process, the system provides vivid visualisations of the prototype for studying its characteristics. Furthermore, the prototype may be superimposed on the product model, and the areas with dimensional errors beyond design limits may be clearly highlighted for subsequent improvement. The designer may thus analyse and compare the surface texture point-by-point of the prototype with the product design.
