    Notes: Abstract A monoclonal antibody obtained by immunization of mice with heat-killed cells of Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4d showed reactivity towards a protein (P45) from L. monocytogenes with an apparent molecular mass of 45 kDa. This protein was detected in the culture supernatant and at the cell surface of L. monocytogenes. Proteins cross-reacting with the monoclonal antibody were present in all Listeria strains investigated, except L. grayi. The structural gene was cloned in Escherichia coli and sequenced. Translation of the gene starts at a TTG initiation codon. The gene was found to code for a protein of 402 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular mass of 42.7 kDa. It has a signal peptide of 27 amino acid residues, resulting in a molecular mass for the mature polypeptide of 39.9 kDa. Protein database searches showed that this protein has 55% similarity and 38% identity to protein p60 of L. monocytogenes and exhibits significant sequence similarities to p54 from Enterococcus faecium and Usp45 from Lactococcus lactis. P45 was shown to have peptidoglycan lytic activity and the encoding gene was named spl (secreted protein with lytic property).

    Notes: Abstract Background: This study was performed to examine the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of adriamycin (ADR), methylprednisolone (solumedrol), cytarabine (Ara-C), and cisplatin (CDDP) in patients with recurrent and refractory malignant lymphomas. Patients and methods: Sixty-five patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) (n=14) or non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) (n=51) were enrolled in the study. The ASHAP therapy consisted of ADR (40 mg/m2 by continuous infusion (CI) over 96 h), methylprednisolone (500 mg i.v., days 1–5), Ara-C (2 g/m2 as a 2-h infusion on day 5), and CDDP (100 mg/m2 by CI over 96 h). Results: Twenty-five patients (38%) achieved complete remission (CR) and 20 (31%) were taken into partial remission (PR) for an overall response rate of 69%. Thirty-two patients with CR or PR following ASHAP underwent high-dose therapy (HDT) with subsequent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. After a median follow-up of 52 months, 13 patients are in continuous CR (CCR), the 3-year event-free survival (EFS) was 30% for responders and 21% for all patients. The median overall survival (OS) was 12 months (range 0–70 months), and the OS rate after 3 years was 32%. Unfavorable prognostic factors for EFS and OS by univariate analysis were an elevated value of the serum lactate dehydrogenase and refractory lymphoma. The most frequently observed side effects following ASHAP were leukocytopenia and thrombocytopenia of World Health Organization (WHO) grades III/IV in approximately 80% of all courses. Non-hematological toxicities such as gastrointestinal side effects, infections, mucositis, renal and neurotoxicity occurred more rarely and reached WHO grades III/IV only occasionally. No treatment-related mortality with ASHAP was observed. Conclusions: ASHAP is an effective and moderately toxic salvage therapy for patients with recurrent or refractory HD and NHL. The results in patients responding to ASHAP and afterwards undergoing HDT with stem cell support are comparable with other established protocols and indicate an improvement in survival if HDT is carried out as intensification.

    Notes: Abstract.  The structure elucidation of some intermediates of the transformation of dinitrotoluene and toluylenediamine isomers is described. Methylnitroanilines, quinoxalines, benzimidazoles and cresols were identified using GC/MS, LC/MS and LC and UV detection. The separation of compounds from the aqueous phase was carried out by solid phase extraction with various column packings. The origin of the purification plant residue coloring is clarified and the related sources and possible pathways of formation of some compounds are given. Finally the results of biodegradation and ecotoxicological experiments [1] are discussed.

    Notes: Summary  Data measured during the TRACT field campaign at various stations along a 7.5° steep and west-northwest facing slope of the Black Forest mountain range (Germany) are used to analyze the thermal structure and the momentum budget associated with thermally induced slope winds. Acceleration of the air close to the ground is found to be directed nearly vertically downward during the night and nearly vertically upward during the day, rather than parallel to the slope. This means that during the night the airflow is deflected by the slope surface in the down-slope direction, whereas during daytime stable stratification above the heated slope layer is required to establish up-slope flow parallel to the slope. The diurnal cycle of the momentum budget of the along-slope wind component near the surface is analyzed in detail with respect to the driving forces (buoyancy and pressure gradient force) and friction. It is found that a small imbalance between forcing and friction is responsible for the diurnal change in slope flow intensity. The along-slope components of the horizontal pressure gradient force and the buoyancy force are shown to have the same order of magnitude. This means that for small to moderate slope angles the pressure gradient force cannot be neglected as is done in some analytical slope wind models. The reaction time of the slope flow to changes in forcing is estimated to be in the range of 30 to 120 seconds, which confirms the empirically known fact that slope winds react very quickly.
