    Notes: Abstract – Piscivorous fish can affect prey growth in two ways: directly by reducing prey density and indirectly by inducing predator-avoidance behaviors. We investigated these two pathways in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) growth responses to walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) stocking in Canadarago Lake, New York (USA) using a 25-year time series. Before walleye stocking, yellow perch growth rate was low and independent of body size. As walleye abundance increased, yellow perch growth increased and became size-dependent. The switch to size-dependent growth occurred in 1 year, indicating a rapid behavioral response to predators. Mean growth rate increased more gradually and was linearly related to walleye density, indicating a slower numerical effect of walleye on yellow perch densities. Although the net effect was an increase in perch growth, small perch growth initially decreased as walleye became established. Therefore, the combination of numerical and behavioral effects produced a complex pattern of size-dependent changes in growth of yellow perch.

    Notes: : Chunks of freshwater trout muscle were immersed in sorbitol solutions (0% to 60%), under different vacuum conditions, for up to 30 min at 5 °C. Moisture loss, weight change, and sorbitol uptake were measured or calculated by mass balance, and cryoprotection during subsequent freezing and thawing was monitored as change in myosin Ca2+ ATPase activity. Vacuum treatment had no effect on measured parameters. Initial sorbitol uptake and weight loss were greater at higher sorbitol concentrations, but adequate cryoprotection was achieved by all treatments when diffusion time following immersion was extended sufficiently. Injection of 60% sorbitol was faster in achieving desired levels of sorbitol in fish meat and induced excellent cryoprotection.

    Statistical Analysis of the Performance of a Biological Nutrient-Removal Plant (2000)

    Notes: Thames Water operated a demonstration-scale biological nutrient-removal plant for two years to investigate the feasibility of retrofitting it into existing activated-sludge plants. The plant was operated with and without the addition of short-chain fatty acids to the anaerobic zone. The results from the trial showed that phosphorus removal was possible, but that performance was not consistently good. The data show that the key parameters which affect the effluent soluble phosphorus concentration are (i) the soluble phosphorus and oxidised nitrogen concentrations at the end of the aeration lane, and (ii) the sludge-blanket depth. Further analysis of the data suggests that secondary release of phosphorus was marked when the concentration of short-chain fatty acids in the anaerobic zone was low, even if the sludge blanket was shallow and when oxidised nitrogen was present in the return sludge. In contrast, secondary release of phosphorus was limited when the concentration of short-chain fatty acids in the anaerobic zone was high.

The implications of recent and current national developments promoted by the Government, the QAA and the research councils are considered briefly.     Notes: The Quality Assurance Agency's (QAA) qualifications framework has resulted in hives of benchmarking activity in 42 subject areas focussed on defining acceptable standards of performance exclusively for first degree awards. There appears to be little similar activity nationally around postgraduate awards. It has been suggested by QAA that, for the time being, awards at postgraduate levels should be benchmarked directly by reference to the outcomes contained within the qualifications framework for awards at levels M and D. This leaves something of a significant black hole in efforts to assure equity of standards across the postgraduate sector. Begins to address this situation by identifying the sort of thinking that has emerged from undergraduate benchmarking groups and applying it in the context of attempting to benchmark the standards of the PhD. Identifies and discusses issues emerging from this process and from associated national workshop activity. Concludes by indicating the questions to which clear answers should be sought if the PhD, as well as other postgraduate awards, are to be rigorously benchmarked.

    Notes: Many children with liver disease undergo major abdominal surgery. Maintenance of anaesthesia is thus an important consideration in this surgical population. Despite a comprehensive and painstaking review of the literature, a sound evidence base, on which a choice of inhalation anaesthetic may be made, is lacking due to limited research in these patients. Differences between the more recent agents such as isoflurane, sevoflurane and desflurane are minor. Sevoflurane is favoured in paediatric practice for gaseous induction, but desflurane or isoflurane are marginally the preferred agents for maintenance of anaesthesia in children with liver disease undergoing major abdominal surgery. However, on the evidence that exists, much of it admittedly in animals and in adults, all three are preferable to halothane in this group of patients. More work is needed in this area before sound conclusions can be drawn and one agent proved to be definitely superior to the others.

    Notes: Extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA) is an uncommon condition presenting in the first few weeks of life. It has an incidence of 0.5–1 per 10 000 live births and is the end result of a destructive inflammatory process involving the extrahepatic biliary system of unknown aetiology occurring in utero. The net result is neonatal jaundice due to bile stasis, with subsequent hepatocellular damage and cirrhosis. In the untreated, patient death is inevitable within 2 years. Precise diagnosis (or exclusion) of EHBA in the persistently jaundiced infant must be made urgently and major surgery (hepatic portoenterostomy: Kasai procedure) carried out as soon as possible, preferably before 6–8 weeks of age. This review is concerned with anaesthesia for correction of EHBA in 50 consecutive patients and also outlines the experience gained in the largest European centre for correction of EHBA where the number of cases now approaches 500.
