    Notes: Optically transparent nanocomposites of strontium–barium–niobate (SBN) and silica were fabricated via a novel sol–gel method. The nanocomposites were annealed in temperatures of 600–800 °C to yield the nanometer-sized tetragonal tungsten–bronze phase of SBN crystallites. Photoluminescence studies at temperatures from 10 K to room temperature were performed. The undoped silica matrix showed a strong emission band at 3.2 eV and a weak emission band at 2.65 eV. They were noticeably suppressed in our SBN/SiO2 nanocomposites. Extra sharp peaks on top of the 3.2 eV band were seen. An additional emission band at 2.3 eV due to transitions within the NbO6 complex of SBN crystallites was also observed. This emission band showed a large blueshift with decreasing SBN crystallite size. This demonstrates that the photoluminescence spectra of ferroelectric-doped silica nanocomposites have a strong dependence on crystallite size. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dynamic rheometry was utilized to characterize viscoelastic changes during heat-induced gelatinization of 2 domestic rice starch suspensions, 1 from waxy and the other from indica rice. Gelatinization included 4 stages: suspension into sol, sol transition to gel, network destruction, and network strengthening. Increase in storage modulus (G′) was observed as early as about 47°C. For indica rice, the maximum value (G′max) was higher, and the decrease afterwards was slower, owing to its higher amylose content. The effects of heating time and temperature were found additive. Sealing samples with oil affected the accuracy of measurement. Finally, the network of starch gels had a larger fractal dimension than that of soy protein isolates previously investigated, suggesting firmer food texture.

    Notes: Abstract. The land surface elevation distribution will serve as fundamental input data to any wetland flow model. As an alternative to the traditional smooth function approach to represent or interpolate elevation data, we explore the use of Levy monofractals and universal multifractals as a means for defining a statistically equivalent topography. The motivation behind this effort is that fractals, like natural topography, are irregular, they offer a way to relate elevation variations measured at different scales, and the relationships are of a statistical nature. The study site was a riparian wetland near Savannah, GA, that contained beavers, and a total of four elevation transects were examined. The elevation increments showed definite non-Gaussian behavior, with parameter values, such as the Hurst coefficient and Lévy index (α), depending on the question of presence of beaver activity. It was obvious that the data were highly irregular, especially the transects influenced by beavers. Significantly different α values were obtained depending on whether the entire data set or just the tails were examined, which demonstrated inability of the monofractal model to reflect fully the irregularity of wetland data. Further analysis confirmed definite multifractal scaling, and it is concluded that the multifractal model is superior for this data set. Universal multifractal parameters are calculated and compared to those obtained previously for more typical terrain. Although it is difficult to consider a unique universal multifractal parameter α for the entire wetland, multifractal-like scaling was evident in each transect as reflected by the nonlinear behaviors of the scaling functions. We demonstrate a good agreement between theory and measurements up to a critical order of statistical moments, q D , close to 3.5 and obtain realistic unconditioned simulations of multifractal wetland topography based on our parameter estimates. Future work should be devoted to conditioning multifractal realizations to data and to obtaining larger data sets so that the question of anisotropy may be studied.

    Notes: Abstract H-OLE1, a gene encoding Δ9-fatty acid desaturase (FAD) in Hansenula polymorpha strain CBS 1976, was isolated by hybridization based upon its homology with the P-OLE1 gene cloned earlier from a related species, Pichia angusta IFO 1475. The sequence of the H-OLE1 gene revealed high structural conservation with Δ9-FADs from various organisms. A putative 451-amino acid polypeptide encoded by the gene, like all other Δ9-FADs, contained two domains: an N-terminal catalytic domain containing three conserved histidine clusters, and a C-terminal cytochrome b 5-like domain which has been suggested to be involved in electron transport in desaturation reactions. The whole H-OLE1 gene complemented a H. polymorpha fad1 mutation leading to a defect in Δ9-FAD. However, the unsaturated fatty acid requirement that the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ole1 mutant displays was complemented by only the open reading frame of H-OLE1 driven by S. cerevisiae glyceroaldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase promoter, but not by the intact H-OLE1, suggesting that the H. polymorphaΔ9-FAD was compatible with the desaturation system of S. cerevisiae whereas the promoter of the H-OLE1 gene had no activity in heterologous cells. It was shown by Northern hybridization that transcription of the H-OLE1 gene in H. polymorpha was slightly repressed by exogenous Δ9-unsaturated fatty acid. An H. polymorpha disruption mutant (ΔH-OLE1) was created by transformation of an fad1/FAD1 diploid with disrupted H-OLE1::S-LEU2 linear DNA. It was shown by genetic and molecular analyses that input DNA was integrated in several copies into the chromosomal target to replace the mutated fad1 allele. Gas chromatography analysis showed identical fatty acid compositions in cells of both fad1 and ΔHOLE1 disruption mutants.

    Notes: Abstract  Alterations of basement membrane (BM) in di-isopropanolnitrosamine (DIPN)-induced carcinogenesis of the rat thyroid gland were examined by means of immunohistochemical localization of collagen type IV (CN-IV), laminin (LN), and fibronectin (FN) in pre-nodular and nodular thyroid lesions, correlating with the morphogenesis and proliferative activity of these lesions. Adult male rats of the Wistar strain were injected s.c. in the back with DIPN, and the thyroid glands were removed at the 15th and 30th week of treatment. Each of 133 thyroid lesions was histochemically analyzed. The follicular epithelial BM as revealed by CN-IV and LN was discontinued or completely lost during the progression of thyroid lesions from pre-nodular to nodular lesions and finally overt carcinomas. At the same time, the BM of vascular endothelial cells demonstrated a loss of dense capillary networks of follicles, a sinusoidal dilatation and, predominantly in carcinomas, development of interstitial-type blood vessels. However, FN, which was hardly stained in the normal thyroid tissue, was remarkably deposited in the interstitium of invasive carcinomas. These observations strongly suggested that alterations of BM structure play a key role in the morphogenesis of rat thyroid tumors, and that the expression of FN is an important step in the invasive growth of thyroid tumors.

    Notes: Abstract Evaluation of the therapy of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is hampered by its rarity and by the striking and unpredictable variation in phenotypic expression. We present two approaches that may facilitate therapy evaluation. (1) We have analysed data on 377 X-ALD patients who have been followed at the Kennedy Krieger Institute for a mean period of 38 months and have subdivided them into 18 subgroups on the basis of age and the degree of abnormality in brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as assessed by the Loes score (Am. J. Neuroradiol 1994; 15: 1761). We find that grouping on the basis of age and MRI score provides information that is of significant prognostic value. (2) We present plans for the development of a placebo-controlled multicentre international study that will have sufficient biostatistical power to provide objective evaluation of new therapeutic interventions.
