    Notes: The yeast HAL1 gene facilitates K+/Na+ selectivity and salt tolerance of cells. Ectopic expression of HAL1 in transgenic tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants minimized the reduction in fruit production caused by salt stress. Maintenance of fruit production by transgenic plants was correlated with enhanced growth under salt stress of calli derived from the plants. The HAL1 transgene enhanced water and K+ contents in both leaf calli and leaves in the presence of salt, which indicates that HAL1 functions in plants using a similar mechanism to that in yeast, namely by facilitating K+/Na+ selectivity under salt stress.

    Notes: Many works have dealt with the study of the allergenic relevance of profilin from allergenic extracts, mainly derived from pollens and vegetable foods. Olive pollen extracts also contain a profilin allergen (Ole e 2). This protein has been characterized in detail, so the aminoacid sequence of three isoforms and the structural model of one of them are already known. The prevalence of Ole e 2 for olive allergenic patients has been evaluated by different in vivo and in vitro methods, and the results compared with those obtained for another pollen profilins.

    Notes: An association between Helicobacter pylori infection and heart disease has been suggested. A potential mechanism may be inflammation-induced atherogenic changes of lipoproteins, but epidemiological studies have provided conflicting results.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:In a prospective multicentre study, 830 patients submitted for endoscopy and H. pylori testing were evaluated. Of the 686 H. pylori-positive patients, 487 received and 199 did not receive eradication treatment. Serum lipids and plasma fibrinogen were measured at baseline in all patients and 3 months later in those initially positive for H. pylori.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results: H. pylori had no influence on baseline lipid or fibrinogen levels. Increases in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were observed in 368 patients who received eradication treatment and in 193 untreated patients: 0.06 mmol/L (P=0.000) and 0.07 mmol/L (P=0.009), respectively. Similar minor increases in total cholesterol and triglycerides occurred in both groups. Lipid changes were related to symptom relief and a reduction in smoking. Eradication therapy was associated with a minor decrease in plasma fibrinogen irrespective of the resolution of infection.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions: H. pylori has no influence on blood lipids or fibrinogen. Both the eradication of infection and symptomatic treatment without eradication are associated with minor lipid changes related to symptom relief and lifestyle modifications. Thus, the inflammatory changes associated with H. pylori are unlikely to affect lipoprotein or fibrinogen metabolism.

    Notes: Abstract. A freshwater fish species, silverside (Odontesthes bonariensis) from Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina, was analyzed for concentrations of several organochlorine pesticides (OCs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in liver, gonads, mesenteric fat and muscle, and the contents of the digestive tract over several stages of sexual maturation. PCBs and OCs were detected at ng/g concentrations (wet weight) in pooled samples, with levels generally in the order of fat 〉 liver 〉 gonad 〉 muscle, reflecting the differences in tissue lipid content. Lipid-normalized concentrations of the analytes were relatively consistent among tissues, except for significantly higher concentrations of PCBs (e.g., 447.7 ng/g lipid wt) in the ovaries of female silverside. DDT and its metabolites, γ-HCH, and several insecticides from the cyclodiene class, including endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate, were the predominant OCs in fish tissues and the contents of the digestive tract, reflecting recent and past pesticide use in this region. The ratio of OCs to PCBs in all tissues was 〉1; consistent with contamination of the region with OC pesticides. However, PCBs were dominated by penta- and hexachlorobiphenyls, which is consistent with direct (i.e., nonatmospheric) inputs. Biomagnification of penta- and hexachlorobiphenyl PCB congeners was noted in fish tissues relative to the contents of the digestive tract. Total OC and PCB concentrations in the ovaries and muscle of silverside were below concentrations associated with reproductive impairment in fish or the limits for human consumption, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract  The levels and burdens of Cd, Zn, Cu and Hg were measured in the dorsal mantle, digestive gland and gonads of the squid Illex argentinus, from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Mature and immature individuals of both sexes were analysed. Correlations of heavy metal concentrations and burdens with sex and food habits were studied. The highest metal levels were found, particularly for Cd, in the digestive gland, which attained a concentration of up to 270 μg g−1 (wet weight). Dorsal mantle and gonads exhibited the same order of metal enrichment: Zn〉Cu〉Cd. Zinc and Cu levels were higher in ovaries than in testes and varied with the stage of maturation. The dorsal mantle exhibited the lowest heavy metal concentrations. Mercury levels were below the detection limit of the method in all the tissues analysed.
